Aristi Beedge - James & Aristi Taylor

James & Aristi Taylor Sell the house and the cars.
Viciously rehome vast tracks of possessions on ebay or Oxfam and ferret away the rest in a (very generous) friend's garage.
Purchase two backpacks and 2 round the world tickets.
Board Plane.

By the end of this trip, we should have enough anecedotes for a lifetime of boring friends of 'this one time when we were just outside <insert location> and you'll never believe what we <saw/did/avoided/etc>.

Result.

Anyone complains, we'll bring out the slideshow. I suspect the edited version could be several hours long.

Before the end of British Rule, and for a small fee, you could point the canons inland and shoot at the locals.
Our trip to Georgetown (which is on the North East corner of Penang Island at the top of the Malay pennisula) was something of an event in itself. The actual coach journey there was painless, but we arrived in a bus station on Penang that was as close to Georgetown as those dodgy EasyJet airports are to the cities that they claim to serve. Being now fully accredited backpackers, we decided that we should really find a local bus into Georgetown rather than pay some (locally) extortionate fee to a taxi driver who believes his meter is really just an [View Full Entry]

The Highlands
As Roy Walker once said "Say what you see. Say what you see".
The Journey to the Cameroon Highlands was made on a Super VIP bus no less. It was about a 5 hour journey, and it set us back about 4 pounds each. I can't stress how comfortable these coaches are, the seats are pretty much like sitting in a first class airline seat, and its just the best way to get about. Why people take long distance taxi's here I will never know. The Cameroon Highlands is about the nearest you will get in Malaysia to British weather. The temperature hovers at around 23C and it rains (and I mean good [View Full Entry]

The rectangular concrete towerblock covered in green tarpaulins was particularly enchanting.
So, here we are in KL. Its certainly got a lot going for it. A ridiculous oversized shopping mals that its pretty likely gives anything in the world a run for its money (Times Square), Petronas Towers ofcourse - until recently the tallest in the world, the KL tower (like the Sears Tower really), but its not really got a whole lot of history (or character as a result). Still its interesting for a time and if we weren't stuck here finishing off our vacinations, or if we came with bags of money to spend, it would probably have been [View Full Entry]

A little smaller than its cousin in London...
We left Tioman on a 7.30 am boat and made it over to the mainland. Unfortunately, when we got there we got directed to the domestic bus terminal (for buses around the area) rather than what they call the international terminal (which really just provides long distances Malay buses - except for ones to Singapore and sometimes to Hat Yai in Thailand). As such, we didn't get on a bus to Melaka till gone 12. Still, sitting and chilling in a local food court for a few hours was ok. We had some toast and drinks for about 25p. The [View Full Entry]

The dark ominous hulk of Tioman lurks through the fading light and driving rain.
Crikey, its been a while since I've updated this thing... Anywho. We woke up to our first morning on Tioman and had a very 'refreshing' (read - very cold) shower before making our way to the beach (about 15 seconds walk) and an incredible view. Have a look at some of the pictures - it really is as beautiful as some of the travel brochures show - at least in many or even most places. The chalet was basic, but had everything we needed. We staying in the Mokhtar Bungalows - nice little family run place - with an attached [View Full Entry]

Where it's rather wet.
Last night we got a decent nights sleep, the last 3 nights we've had a large bunch blokes decend on the place whom don't seem to have a problem with the idea that talking at full volume at 4 in the morning with a room full of unknown paying guests is possibly considered socially inconsiderate in most parts of the world. If it isn't - it should be. I eventually told them as much, but language barriers reduced my message presumably to something along the lines of - "I'm deranged and looking slightly annoyed". Either way it shut them up. I [View Full Entry]

All was quiet as the Singaporean Lookout viewed the vast invasion fleet lying at anchor off the coast...
If one night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble, then a collection of night in Singapore makes a travelling man slightly bored. Waiting about for injections is getting to be a bore. Anyways. The Betel Box hostel (that we are now in - and is decidedly better than the other place) is rather near the beach, so we spent a day down there... hired a tandem and cycled up and down beach front. Its a wierd place... if not and unpleasant one. There are hundreds (or at least near to a hundred) tankers at anchor off the coast, presumably all [View Full Entry]

We are actually running two blogs, so as we speak Aristi is penning a more refined (obviously) and critically a less hair-raising blog for people that will worry - Namely, our families (e.g. minus hair raising stories of wild tiger attacks or, god forbid, even of running out of toiletries). I write this, because she just stole my title. You can check her version of her Blog, including her stolen title, here: http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Taylor--s/ After waking up around 10.30am (we are still adjusting with the jet lag) we decided to make our way to the Jurong Bird Park. Singapore is basically a massive massive mall with small enclosed places where people can live, work or basically do anything else. Its effectively the reverse of the shopping centre in the UK. In the UK, you specifically go to a shopping centre, in Singapore if you aren't explicitly in a house, a zoo or museum, or possibly on Sentosa Island you are either IN a mall or between two big malls (i.e. crossing a road). Whilst that sounds like to hell to some, bear in mind that during the day its so hot and humid that its rather pleasant to escape [View Full Entry]

We feel like two laden pack horses after visiting luggage collection...
Hello to everyone (and anyone who may have stumbled across us). About a year ago we decided that it was time to throw it all in and finally make that trip around the world. Unfortunately, there was just one problem. Renovating our house! Finally the place is on the market, with the dreaded hell demons (I mean foxtons), and we are here on the first destination of our journey - Singapore. Singapore is a sort of home from home for us both, since we have both been here before (and in Aristi's case - twice). Her second stay, and my first, [View Full Entry]
