After the ljourney from Mancora by colectivo (this is a hiace which everyone is piled into) as far as a town called Tumbes and then a short journey to the border town Huaquillas, we hopped on the bus in Ecuador to go up to Quito. We arrive 15 hrs later and were naturally very tired. We spent most of the day sleeping. The followin g day we went to the actual point of the Equator and went to a really good museum where they did loads of interesting experiments to prove that the equator should actually be located in Quito, Ecuador. We left Quito after 2 days and headed to some thermal baths in a town called Baños. Really pretty town which has an active volcano which erupts everynight at around 9pm. Despues del viaje ... read more

Our last stop in Peru was a small coastal town called Mancora where we spent 5 days lying on the beach. The weather was nice everyday and got to about 30 degrees. Here both surfing and kite-surfing are really popular. We arrived in Cusco, Peru 2 days before the Inca Trail to acclimatise properly. Cusco is a beautiful little and a great place to go to if you want to party. This has to have been the best trip we have done so far in South America. We did a 4 day trek in order to get to Machu Picchu and had such a great time. The first day wasn´t too bad. We were picked up and after lunch walked for about 4 hours to our first campsite. Now Im not really a camping girl but this was good craic but then when you have a cook who makes all your meals and porters to pitch your tent for you everynight it´s hard not to enjoy it. I have never seen people work as hard ... read more

While based in La Paz we also took a visit to Lake Titicaca. While there we stayed on Isla del Sol which is a beautiful island about an hour away from Copacabana. The weather was beautiful and warm during the day but at around six in the evening it was pitch black outside and there was no electricity so our torches came into action. While in La Paz we made 2 trips. One was cycling down Death Road which meant that you had to cycle from 4700m to 1300m above sea level. I was by no means the fastest cyclist as you can sea from the photos there was always the sheer drop beside you to consider! I got there in the end though even if my hands were in bits from pulling on the breaks! Check out the nice cycling gear we had to wear. We also went to Rurrenebaque to do the Pampas tour and spot some wildlife. Despite our flight being cancelled twice, we finally made it. We spent 2 days on and off a small boat and were shown so many birds, crocodiles, pink dolphins, wild monkeys an we also went pirana fishing. Mientras en ... read more

We crossed the Chilean-Bolivian border to begin the Salt Flats tour. We travelled in convoy wih one other Jeep. Myself, Lorraine, Helen and Anna & Paul went in one of the jeeps and then a group consisting of a french woman, an Englis lad, 2 Kiwis and and a welsh girl were in the other. The first part of the trip was to bathe in thermal springs whic unfortunately we were unable to do because we though that that was for day 2. We then visited Lago Colorado which was beautiful. The first night was spent in basic accomodation and it must have been about -5 to -10 outside. We then got up bright and early the following morning to head to visit some other sights along the way to our second nights lodgings in ... read more

San Pedro de Atacama South America » Chile » San Pedro de Atacama By AoifeR April 30th 2007 San Pedro de Atacama is a sleepy town set in the Chilean desert. It was here that we met with friends Anna and Paul. We quickly organised 2 trips for the following day which consisted of visiting the El Tatio Geysers at 4 am and later that day the Vale de la Luna to watch the sunset. I was really impressed by the geysers and later that morning we were able to bathe in the hot springs nearby. The Vale de la luna was equally impressive with vast area resembling the surface of the moon. Era aqui donde e... read more

After travelling up Ruta 40 we arrived in Barriloche which is the lake district and there are a total of 7 lakes to visit. We rented a car and went around the lakes. We also did some kayaking while we were here. There were so many chocolate shops and cafes here which of course we had to visit. ... read more

We flew to El Calafate from Buenos Aires which took about 3 hours. As soon as we walked outside the airport the view of the lake nearby was beautiful. We went to see the Perito Moreno glacier the following day and it was great. We could get so close to it. The sound of the ice falling from the glacier into the lake was so loud. We hiked through the forest surrounding it and got to see it from different altitudes.. After all the partying and travelling in Buenos Aires and Iguazu, we decided to go to Uruguay to relax by the beach for a few days..I enjoyed the beach there but if you didn´t have much time in South America, it wouldn´t be top of my list of countries to visit.. We just visited Montevideo for the day before going back to Buenos Aires by bus followed by an hour long ferry trip. ... read more
