Seven months ago, during the midst of our travels, we were writing about the amazing conditions we had whilst snowboarding in Valle Nevado, Chile. It was such a fabulous change from the holiday we'd taken to Flaine in Jan 2007 where'd we experienced record high temperatures (sitting outside your chalet in t-shirts at 2000m in the Alps in Jan!) and record low snow cover. So, this year was a real gamble - we'd booked another holiday to the French Alps in January, most people thought we were crazy, but wow, did the gamble pay off. We have just returned from the best snowboarding holiday we've ever had in the French Alps. The conditions in La Plagne were second only to our Chile trip. It snowed for two days before we arrived, so our first day on ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Morro de São Paulo August 17th 2007

From Lencois we took the five hour overnight bus back to Salvador, arriving at 5am in the morning. After a few hours kip on the bus station floor (oh the glamour!) we grabbed a cab to the harbour in Salvador to take the ´fast´catamaran to Morro de Sao Paulo, an island just two hours away. The ´fast´catamaran service actually turned out to be a catamaran / bus / slow ricketty boat combo which took four hours. The sea was too rough to cross entirely on the catamaran, but once again the situation wasn´t explained to anyone. By the time we reached Morro the boat was full of seriously pissed off tourists. We were knackered and hacked off after a long journey with little sleep (and it was pouring down with rain which didn´t help!), but at ... read more

Well, the end of our trip is definitely in sight now and it is getting harder and harder to keep Andi off the beaches! This is my last chance, the town of Lencois and the national park of Chapada Diamantina, an outdoor hiking mecca six hours inland from Salvador. When we arrived in the town in the afternoon we were fairly mobbed by touts and guides offering us tours and services. It is all very friendly, but it gets wearisome to not be able to just wander along and check out the places you´ve already chosen from the guide book. Still, using the well-honed technique of leaving Andi in a cafe with the bags while I ninja´d unburdened through the shadows, we managed to get a room in a lovely place (who´s name I have totally ... read more

´Thank-you for flying on our next generation aircraft´ were the words we heard as we touched down in Salvador. Again, it had been an appalling landing (seems to be the norm in South America), but the best thing was the ´next generation´ aircraft we´d just flown in was clearly older than the placement students at work! Still, we´d saved ourselves a 24 hour bus journey and we´d survived!! Salvador is probably one of the favourites for the scariest Danger & Annoyances section in the Lonely Planet, beating even Rio! We stayed out of the historic centre in one of the safer areas by the beach in Barra, but in the end spent the majority of our time in the Pelorinho (the historic centre with brightly painted colonial buildings). Again, this was a proper whistle stop tour, ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Ilha Grande August 5th 2007

Yippeeee!!!! Finally we´ve found some sunshine on the island of Ilha Grande (pronounced Gran-gee, Portugues is officially a crazy language!), about two hours south of Rio. The island is absolutely beautiful, not the most impressive beaches in the world, but the setting is just gorgeous, backed by impressive rainforest reminisant of Cape Tribulation in Australia. We didn´t have the best start on the island, as we arrived on the island at full moon when the sea goes mental and high tide engulfs all of the beach and some of the inland walkways. It was a blessing in disguise because it meant we couldn´t walk around to the hostel we´d book and found ourselves a much better located posada (guesthouse) for the same price that was absolutely lovely. We figured to hell with socialising in a hostel, ... read more

How do you get one of the most famous beaches in the world entirely to yourselves? Simple, ensure you visit on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon! Our first proper stop in Brazil was Rio, and during the five days we spent there we never saw the sun once! To be honest neither of us were particularly excited about visiting Rio - the Lonely Planet curbed our excitment with too many warnings about personal safety; expect to be mugged whilst in Rio, never take out anything you aren´t willing to lose, if you look like a tourist you´ll die - you get the picture. In the end we both loved our time here, although it was a bit of a rollercoaster five days, and we both left wanting to return (when the sun was shining!). We ... read more

After yet another relatively successful 24 hour journey (the bus only broke down once!) we arrived in Puerto Iguazu, excited at the prospect of spending the next three days exploring Iguazu Falls. Iguazu falls straddle the Argentine / Brazilian border and consists of over 270 waterfalls, but all the facts and pictures in the world do not prepare you for how truely spectacular the place is. Niagra is a mear trickle in comparison, and at 14 times wider and almost twice as tall Iguazu is bound to impress even the most demanding travellers! Our first two days were spent on the Argentine side, where for the pricely sum of 5 pounds you can explore a number of walking trails which take you over, under and up close and personal with the various waterfalls. The first day ... read more

"What's new Buenos Aires? I'm new, you wanna know what you're gonna get in me..." Etc., etc., etc. So, here we are in the capital of Argentina - famous for Madonna, Jimmy Nail and some bloke called Evita. Actually, one of the things BA should be famous for (and Argentina in general) are the absolutely amazing long-distance buses! We arrived here from Bariloche in a 'super-cama' bus that took just under 24 hours, and it was great. A bit of a splurge, but there are films, fully reclining seats and food served (with wine). Just when you think it can't get any better, they bring round a choice of whiskey or champagne as a nightcap! Forty quid well spent! Our first day in Buenos Aires was Sunday, and being as we had arrived feeling fairly sprightly ... read more

South America » Chile » Araucanía » Pucón July 13th 2007

So, we left Santiago in high spirits; the weather had been kind to us and gifted us with a week of perfect snowboarding conditions, the price had been bargainous and the food marvelous. A real holiday within a holiday. Despite losing most of the feeling in my right foot (it still hasn't returned!) we headed down towards the Lake District in high spirits... Our first stop was the small town of Pucon. Bordered by a lake on one side and an active volcano on the other, the setting is supposed to be one of the most picturesque in Chile. It certainly looked promising as our overnight bus from Santiago brought the sunlit volcano into sight (just as we stirred from our slightly hunched slumber). The cone of the volcano is almost perfectly symmetrical, and the ... read more

It was a long shot, expecting snow in the second week of the Chilean ski season, but it happened, and it happened big style! We arrived in Valle Nevado one week after the season began to snow blizzards. It was so bad that we didn´t even make it onto the slopes the first day, having nearly been blown off our feet just stepping outside the hotel door. It was a disappointing start, but with eight days to play with missing out on one wasn´t the end of the world. In the end it turned out to be well worth the fantastic conditions that we had for the remainder of the week. Neither of us have ever seen powder like it, and have never snowboarded in such perfect conditions - the resort was empty, the sky ... read more
