Returning home to Nottingham for a week was both lovely and odd in equal measure. It was great to catch up with family and friends but it was strange being back without having to go back to the daily routine. We had just six days to see everyone and get through a to-do list that rivalled the kind of nightmare work to-do lists I had in the run up to this trip. If it had been down to me we'd have gone home for two days max, but thankfully Paul is a little more practical and insisted on a few more days. Packing for the second half of our trip proved to be a little challenging. We had all the stuff we need for diving in Indonesia (wet suits, snorkels, fins, masks, dive computers) plus warmer ... read more

Our time in the mountains has come to and end and we are so incredibly sad. It has been epic and neither of us want it to be over. It's hard to believe how quickly it has gone and how totally addictive snowboarding can be. In our twelve weeks away we have visited six resorts, and made a home away from home in three. We've snowboarded for 61 days and covered over 2000km! We've been to dinner with someone who used to work for NASA and met a bus driving writer. It has been an unforgettable experience, one we would love to repeat (come on lottery win!!!) Although we might not be ready to retire until next year, our kit is definitely ready to be retired, forever. It's fair to say that we both look like ... read more

Well actually it was more than one day, but that doesn't work so well for the title. Having said that I'm not sure how many people will get the song reference (look up Ocean Colour Scene if confused). In my last, none booze related, blog I mentioned how the terrain at Big Sky was different to other resorts we've visited and how we'd found it challenging. What I'd didn't mention was some of the stuff we'd done off the Lone Peak Tram. There was a reason for that - I didn't want any of our parental units worrying about us - but now we are safely down the mountain (Paul and I sat at Bozeman airport, Katherine sat at her desk at work) it's time to come clean. The Lone Peak Tram was introduced to Big ... read more

Spring has arrived which means taking each day as it comes and being prepared to change plans on an hourly basis. Going out everyday for full on days just doesn't always happen. When it's super icy there is no point heading out on the first lift, and on warmer days staying out until last lift means surfing down the lower slopes in slush, or having to deal with that dreaded sticky snow we discovered in Park City. The changing conditions coincided with my birthday week, which saw a steady increase in our alcohol intake. Katherine and I had bought a bottle of vodka in Park City that lasted about three weeks. In contrast we seemed to be draining our new bottle in record time - this wasn't helped by the christening of our souvenir shot glasses ... read more

Big Sky has been on our hit list for about five years now, after we read about how on average there are 2 acres of terrains per skier / snowboarder, so I have been super excited about coming here. One of the main reasons we've stopped going to France are the crowds; there are just too many people in the big resorts that it can be dangerous. America in comparisons is much quieter, and Big Sky is next level quiet - it's amazing! Big Sky has a very different vibe to the other resorts we've been to. It feels a little old school and very chilled. Rather than big 'canteen' style restaurants on the mountain, there are overgrown (cute) sheds that house tiny little soup kitchens. And it is so quiet - we've barely had to ... read more

There are some compromises to be made when you're travelling. You have plenty of time but money is very limited; the sooner you burn through it the sooner you have to come home. Sticking to a budget is challenging and this is why we ended up taking a flight from Salt Lake City to Bozeman that went via Seattle. If, like me, your knowledge of US geography is a little limited, you may not realise how crazy this route was, but a quick look on google maps and you will understand. Unlike our last big travel day, the day we went from Salt Lake City to Bozeman and then onto Big Sky was almost a complete disaster! Our first flight left at 7.30am so we had a 5am start which was a little painful off the ... read more

Our big travel day went remarkably smoothly. Waking up in Breckenridge at 8am and being at our condo in Park City by 6pm was a small miracle given we had to get down one mountain, fly to another state and get up another mountain. Obviously it was snowing when we left Breck, but not enough to impact our transfer. Our new condo was a little weird - I think the pictures speak for themselves. We think the place is owned by some skiing/fishing/hunting mad people. There are real, dead animals on the walls, I kid you not (again, look at the pics!). The kitchen was ram packed with filthy kitchenware with not an inch of space for any food or drink. Even the oven was full of baking trays. Our first job was to select the ... read more

Our first four weeks of snowboarding has come to an end. It feels like it has gone by in a flash but at the same time feels like forever ago that we opened the door to our studio apartment with trepidation (surrounded by a million, noisy college students all trying to check in!) During our time in Breck we've had so many different conditions which just goes to show how quickly weather in the mountains can change. In our first week we had tons of snow but in complete contrast, week two got off to a sunny start. We were back to snowboarding on groomers and could see the lovely scenery for pretty much the first time since we'd arrived. We were doing 50km days and still making it back down the mountain mid afternoon - ... read more

What a week!!! Our first week of snowboarding has been incredible. Some how we managed to time our arrival into Denver and our transfer to Breckenridge (two days later) in between two major storms. This is our third trip to Colorado, and on the previous two visits we've had hair raising transfers in the driving snow. Last year our tiny plane that took us from Chicago to Grand Junction landed in the middle of a snow storm and I was convinced that we weren't going to make it out alive! This time our transfer was wonderful, on a beautiful sunny day. No snow stress, just lovely scenery (and free wifi!). We arrived in Breck at the start of college week, so check in was mental and it's been less than quiet in our little condo, but ... read more

Walking out of work on Friday 23rd December should have been the best feeling in the world. Christmas and New Year to look forwards to followed by six whole months of travelling. But it was a bit of an anti climax if I'm honest and as I reflected on this over a couple of drinks that evening the reason why suddenly dawned on me - we had a hell of a lot still to organise before we left Nottingham and somehow had to cram in xmas and new year too (including five nights away from home). Xmas and new year went by in a flash and before we knew it we had 48 hours left to get everything done, including driving home from Katherine's house in Hitchin. Maybe travelling immediately after xmas and new year wasn't ... read more
