Day 72: Sunday, February 7th, 2010 Paihia, New Zealand to Waitomo, New Zealand. Per the Contiki brochure: "We head south, stopping in Auckland for lunch before traveling through the lush Waikato farming region to Waitomo, home of magical limestone formations and sparkling Glow-worms. Tonight there's the chance to meet the local characters." So, I'm now writing this blog on 2/22/10- needless to say, I have forgotten much. I do remember that we left Paihia and stopped in Auckland again. Here, we dumped off the "olbies" (their tour was up) and picked up some "newbie newbies". We then headed down to Waitomo and we got into the hotel (Kiwi Paka Waitomo) at the same time that the Black Water R... read more

Day 71: Saturday, February 6th, 2010 Paihia, New Zealand (Bay of Islands) Per the Contiki brochure: "A day of adventure and fun. The day is yours to enjoy the overwhelming beauty of the Bay of Islands. How about a Catamaran cruise through the "Hole-in-the-Rock", maybe sail to a deserted island for lunch, perhaps travel along Ninety Mile Beach to Cape Reinga at "lands end" or just relax and have a drink with your fellow travelers." I slept like crap all night, kept having a dream that some old man was walking around in our room. Fun! We meet up with Emmo in the wee hours of the morning and there are only about 12 of us wanting to see the service. We start the walk over to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and 30 minutes later we ... read more

Day 70: Friday, February 5th, 2010 Auckland, New Zealand to Paihia, New Zealand. Per the Contiki Brochure: "Today will be the day awesome scenery, great fun and extreme adventure take on new meanings! Meet your Contiki crew and view the beauty of Auckland's famous harbor as we cross the Auckland Harbor Bridge. Heading towards the subtropical region of Northland, we'll explore Parry Kauri Park before checking into our Resort in Paihia. In the evening get to know your fellow travelers during dinner." I'm to meet up with the Contiki group at the Mercure Hotel today. The brochure says we depart at Noon so I'm assuming I need to get there before Noon to fill out forms and what not. I'm all twitchy and ready to get going so I leave my hotel at 10:30am and start ... read more

Day 67, 68 & 69: Tuesday, February 2nd - Thursday, February 4th, 2010 Auckland, New Zealand. Even though I hadn't slept in forever, my body still decided that after 7 hours I was ready to be awake. So, I woke up at 3 am on Tuesday and couldn't go back to sleep. So I worked on the blog and cruised the net which, thanks to the time difference, a lot of my friends were online. Auckland is 18 hours ahead of the East Coast. Around 8 am I get ready for the day and head out the door around 9. I decide to go to Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter which is an aquarium of sorts. Kelly was an accomplished diver who took some old, no longer used sewer tanks and canals and transformed them into aquariums. ... read more

Day 65 & 66: Saturday, January 30, 2010 thru Monday, February 1st, 2010 (Lose 1/31 due to time/date change) Cairo, Egypt to Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Melbourne, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand. Remember on the previous blog that I ended with "I cannot wait to get the hell out"? Yeah, that's called tempting Fate, boys and girls. I wake up at 8am to the sound of someone trying to open my hotel room door. I groggily call out "Hello?" and get the reply "oh, you're still in there." So, guess housekeeping was ready for Contiki to get the hell out. I hop in the shower and pack and I'm updating my blog when they try again. I, not so patiently, yell out "Yes, I'm still here, I'm not leaving until Noon!" So, at Noon, I ... read more

Day 64: Friday, January 29, 2010. Cairo, Egypt Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "First to Sakkara to see the oldest pyramid in the world - the Step Pyramid. We continue on to the Citadel, Alabaster Mosque, Sultan Husan Mosque and time to shop in the bazaar. A chance to join us for a Light and Sound show at the Pyramids on our final evening together." We got into Cairo around 5am. I said goodbye to my nightly roommate, Kate from Minnesota, and the group took off to the hotel. We got our rooms and Sherif told us to be back in the lobby at 7:30am. Long enough to take a shower and get the train funk off of me. That is, if there had been any hot water. I left the shower running for 5 minutes ... read more

Day 63: Thursday, January 28, 2010. Luxor, Egypt to Cairo, Egypt. Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "A visit to the Valley of the Kings- the place where King Tutankhamun was buried, before we make our way to the magnificent temple of Karnak. In the afternoon, see the Colossos of Memnon and why not join us for a visit to a traditional Egyptian village? Later, we board our overnight train to Cairo." We hit the road around 7 am (I think, can't remember and it was only this morning!) and head towards the Valley of the Kings. On the way we stop and take pictures of the Colossis of Memnon and there were some hot air balloons drifting around at that point- very cool. We head into the Valley and Sherif tells us that people would sneak ... read more

Day 62: Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Edfu, Egypt to Luxor, Egypt via Nile cruise. Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "Today starts with a visit to Egypt's best preserved temple dedicated to Horus, the Falcon God (Edfu Temple). Casting off, we spend the afternoon on-board watching Upper Egypt slip by. We arrive in Luxor (the ancient city of Thebes) in time to view the temple of Luxor." The morning came before most people would have liked and we were out the door around 7 am to go to Edfu Temple of Horus. Each temple seems to get bigger and bigger and this one is very impressive. Sherif gives us another great tour and explains many of the drawings and how one of the walls is a play that people would come yearly to "experience". It confused a ... read more

Day 61: Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Aswan, Egypt to Edfu, Egyp via Nile cruise. Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "This morning, why not join our fantastic excursion to Abu Simbel- the most complete example of ancient Egyptian architecture. Built by Pharaoh Ramses II more than 3,000 years ago, the temples were moved over a period of years to their new site safely above the waters of Lake Nasser. After lunch, we cruise to Kom Ombo to view this unique temple, shared by two Gods. We reach Edfu, where we spend the night on-board." Day 60: Monday, January 25, 2010. Aswan, Egypt Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "Arriving in Aswan midmorning we view the unfinished obelisk and visit the High Dam. We sail on a felucca to the Botanical Gardens before joining our cruise ship for a sumptuous lunch." We pull into Aswan around 8:30 am and hop on another tour bus. First we head to the High Dam and it was pretty impressive to see how they control the Nile River. We then pass by the a monument that looks like a giant Lotus flower which commemorates the friendship between Russia & Egypt (they helped build the dam.) We get to the Unfinished Obelisk and rock quarry. This was going to be the tallest obelisk ever made and it was being made under the order of Queen Hatshepsut. Unfortunately, ... read more
