Day 82: Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 Queenstown, New Zealand to Milford Sound. Per Contiki brochure: "Need an adrenalin boost? We'll take you to a bridge to jump off! The bungee jumping bridge provides a hair-raising, gob-stopping adrenalin rush. It is one of the options on this tour that separates the tourists from the purists. Pure fun. Pure rush. Why don't you try it? After this we travel to Fiordland National Park, where we head through the Homer Tunnel (D'OH!) for our first view of Mitre Peak and Milford Sound. Then it's all aboard the Milford Wanderer for an overnight cruise taking in all the beauty of the fjord. There's the chance to kayak and see whales, dolphins and penguins along with towering mountains and breathtaking waterfalls. It'll be an evening to treasure!" We left Queenstown in ... read more

Day 81: Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 Queenstown, New Zealand I had the morning excursion this time, white water rafting, so Alex got to sleep in. I met up with Jen, Tara and Bryce in the lobby and the white water rafting people picked us up shortly. There were some other Contiki folks who were doing a helicopter ride into the canyon and then would join up with us at the beginning of the rafting. We had a very hair raising ride to the river. Our bus (basically a school bus) drove down a very narrow dirt rode that 90% of the time was on a sheer drop off of a mountain. Whew! We get to the rafting place, get into wetsuits (soooo much easier when they're dry- much unlike the Glow Worm excursion!), and take another ... read more

Day 80: Monday, February 15th, 2010 Queenstown, New Zealand Per Contiki brochure: "Leisure is probably the wrong word as Queenstown is known as the "Adventure-Adrenalin capital of the world", one of those places that you can literally do as much or as little as you like. A number of options to astound you await! Ever tried bungy jumping, sky diving, jet boating, river boarding, white water rafting, helicopter riding, luging, canyon swinging, four wheel driving, hiking??? Be extreme! Action by day, action by night- that's Queenstown. Yes, when you've dried off and caught your breath, it'll be time to experience Queenstown's legendary nightlife, and there's no shortage of venues for dining and socializing- why not try an optional meal at the world famous Skyline gondola complex." I woke up to Alex's alarm around 6:30 this morning ... read more

Day 79: Sunday, February 14th, 2010 Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand to Queenstown, New Zealand Per Contiki brochure: "Today there's the chance to explore the incredible Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers with professional guides that will be on hand to show you the beauty of the natural wonder. We'll then journey through Haast Pass to Queenstown and our lodge high above Lake Wakatipu. Hold onto your hat- Queenstown beckons!" We woke up at 6am today with breakfast at 6:30am and we were on the road at 7am. First up- the glaciers! When signing up for the excursions, I had initially opted for the cheapest helicopter flight/glacier touchdown. Then I changed my mind and switched to the glacier hike, which would only let us wander towards the bottom but was cheaper. Then, upon hearing another girl in ... read more

Day 78: Saturday, February 13th, 2010 Christchurch, New Zealand to Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand Per Contiki brochure: "We'll cross the spectacular Southern Alps via majestic Arthur's Pass and take in the jade greenstone carving at Hokitika. Then we'll journey along the South Island's rugged coast to the awesome Westland National Park, home to Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers." Emmo & Mikey gave us a driving tour of Christchurch as we left (Emmo's from there). Cute little town. Driving by one bridge you see these large metal beams that kind of look like they were remains from an old bridge. Ends up they were beams from the World Trade Center and were given to the city to be used as a sculpture memorial. We also saw the Christchurch C... read more

Day 77: Friday, February 12th, 2010 Wellington, New Zealand to Christchurch, New Zealand. Per Contiki brochure: "Board the Inter-Island ferry and do the north to south island hop through picturesque Marlborough Sound and Cook Strait to Picton. Then make sure your camera's at the ready for the spectacular views along the Kaikoura Coastline. If we're lucky, we'll spot one of the many sea colonies in this area. Then, via the Canterbury Plains, we'll head towards the city of Christchurch." Today was a travel day. We took a ferry, the Interislander, from Wellington to Picton and then hopped on another Contiki bus and into Christchurch. The ferry crossing was uneventful and other than the beautiful scenery, boring as hell. Plus, not enough seats for everyone so we had to scrounge to s... read more

Day 76: Thursday, February 11th, 2010 Wellington, New Zealand. Per Contiki brochure: "A full day to explore the city and its surrounding area. Take your time to enjoy the amazing Museum of New Zealand, known as Te Papa "Our Place". Maybe do some shopping or see the sights of the Lord of the Rings trilogy or just relax in one of the city's many cafes. Later this evening join us for a walkabout dinner." Today I had my first (I'm so embarrassed to say "first") Lord of the Rings location tour- the Wellington Rover Tour. Now, Emmo had warned those of us that had signed up (Tara being one) that only the truly hardcore fans would appreciate it. I assumed I was hardcore- even though I tend to fall asleep during the extended versions. My heart ... read more

Day 75: Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 Taupo, New Zealand to Wellington, NZ. Per Contiki brochure: "The mountains of Tongariro National Park provide a spectacular sight on the way to Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. A scenic waterfront drive to the top of Mt. Victoria acts as the perfect introduction to this cosmopolitan city famed for its cafes, restaurants and trendy bars." The day starts with what has become "our song": "Hand in My Pocket" by Alanis Morisette. The words are quite fitting for this trip (especially the "broke but happy" part!) Along the way to Wellington, the landscape changed many times. From desert to green rolling hills to snowy mountains in the distance- bizarre, but beautiful! Mikey & Emmo pulled the bus over at one point so we could take pi... read more

Day 74: Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 Rotorua, New Zealand to Taupo, New Zealand Per the Contiki brochure: "What a day for your travel diary, along the steaming Wairakei Valley to the raging Huka Falls before continuing to our exclusive resort beside New Zealand's largest lake - Taupo. This afternoon you're free to wander the shops, enjoy a jet boat ride with Huka Jet or challenge gravity on the Rock 'n' Ropes. Tonight maybe try fishing and later enjoy the famous local nightlife." So, I'm working off of pictures and the Contiki brochure for the rest of the New Zealand updates. I'm sure much hilarity has been forgotten. I do remember us stopping at Huka Falls because not only did I take pictures, but because the falls looked more like roaring rapids- I didn't se... read more

Day 73: Monday, February 8th, 2010 Waitomo, New Zealand to Rotorua, New Zealand. Per the Contiki brochure: "There will be time today, if you wish, to visit the Glow-worm grotto or try underground cave rafting . Then we'll visit the Agrodome farm show, on our way to the thermal area of Rotorua. Maybe try the Zorb or end the day by relaxing in a Polynesian thermal pool, before taking in an optional Maori Hangi meal and concert. Today we stopped at a sheep shearing demo at the Agrodome on our way to Rotorua... yes, thrilling. It was cool to see how the sheep dogs were trained though- impressive. I had my picture taken with one sheep, promised to call it later, and we got back on the bus and went to Rotorua. So, here's a shout ... read more
