I convinced Jo that we should take a good long ride out of town - our first motorcycle adventure. We ate the free hotel bacon and egg breakfast, had a quick swim in the pool and dropped some laundry in to a small shop in town. With our errands run we headed north approximately 70 kilometres towards Erawan National Park and the Erawan Falls. The 125cc Honda bikes are not really designed for comfort over long distances but behaved themselves well. They were fairly good on the open road up to about 75kph and would do around 90kph at a push. We stopped several times on the way to take in the Thai countryside and rode through small villages with smiling locals wondering what the hell two white faces were doing coming through their town on ... read more

I took a package tour from my hostel the waterfalls after reading that they're the most beautiful in the province. Whoever wrote that clearly didn't visit right after heavy rains. The falls were beautiful. But everything was muddy. There are seven tiers and our guide had suggested we see the first four, and we might have time for five. I decided I wanted to see the fifth, but halfway up I slipped and was suddenly on the ground and covered in mud. I decided that was enough for me. I walked down to tier three (my favorite) to wash off in the water. I love wearing water-proof sandals and don't understand why some people wear Nikes to a waterfall. I got cleaned up and slowly made my way back down to the meeting point. Along the ... read more

Thailand - Kanchanaburi - Heavenly waterfalls and daylight "monkey" robbery! No sooner had I landed in Bangkok I would be on the move again to Kanchanaburi, this is where Maam and I would spend a few days before Gav would join us for the new year celebrations. After taking a late night minivan from Bangkok and sitting in traffic for what seemed like hours we eventually arrived. Because it was late I couldn't really appreciate the setting but the following morning all was revealed. It was like a mini swamp or tropical jungle with a central walkway leading to several huts and bungalows, it was incredibly beautiful and so quiet, I couldn't have asked for more and I really wasn't anticipating it. The next morning we hired a motorbike and set off to a well-known waterfall ... read more

Unfortunately we never made it Tiger temple as on the way back from 7-11 Tel managed to have an incident with a piece of pipe sticking up from the pavement, and yes you guessed it, the same toe, all over again! We weren't allowed to go to the temple in case the tigers smelled blood!!! So we spent a day at the Thailand Burma Railway museum which was much more informative than the weird one by the bridge! The museum had archives of the pow's stories and some of their personal artefacts and was very moving. After this we walked across to the Allied War Cemetary to pay our respects to those who lost their lives. We then went about an hour out of Kanchanburi to Hellfire Pass to the museum there and we also walked ... read more

On Sunday we headed to Erawan National Park, which is a good daytrip from Kanchanaburi to see the 7-tiered waterfall. We took a bus there from Kanchanaburi no problem and it was well worth the trip. Each level of the waterfall was different from the last and beautiful in its own way. The water was that sort of turquoise-blue color that I think is caused by calcium (don't ask the science teacher!) There were tons of Thai families, particularly around the lower levels, eating picnics, playing in the water, and relaxing. National parks in Thailand and other government-controlled tourist sights charge one entrance price for foreigners and another price for Thai people (which seems to be about 10-20% of the foreigner price). I’ve noticed that sometimes it’s even cleverly disguised that there are 2 different prices, ... read more
This sign did make me a little nervous
This one doesn't look so ferocious. Rather loveable, really.

Erawan National Park was about an hour and a half bus ride from where we were staying on the first river hut in Kanchanaburi... The major attraction of the park is Erawan Falls, a waterfall named after the erawan, the three-headed white elephant of Hindu mythology. The seven-tiered falls are said to resemble the erawan. And let me tell you, in my mist of hiking and sweating in the Thailand sun, I think I just might have seen a three-headed white elephant... or two?! The trail was steep, slippery and non-existent from time to time, but not to worry because I had professionals with me (Claire and Bonnie) that kept me in check and we dominated that mountain hike and all seven waterfalls in record breaking time! Soooo the morning started out with all three girls ... read more

I hired a motorbike for the day as I couldn't find a tour that covered what I wanted to do and I was fed up of being sat on a bus!! I found a great deal for a 125 manual at 3 quid for the day with half a tank of petrol!!!! Ther was even a helmet!! Amazing! After getting a 'map' from the coffee shop next to my hotel that rented me the bike (as I write this I see that it may not have been the wisest idea!) I headed off to the Erawan waterfall. According to the 'map' this was just under 30km away so after about 25 mins on the road, I nearly fell off the bike when I came to a sign that said Erawan 51km! Apparently the map was not ... read more

Hi! Thanks for all your comments, it's really nice to hear from everyone. On Wednesday 12th we visited a place called the Tiger Temple. Basically it's a rescue centre for harmed or poached animals which was set up by a Buddist Monk. The story goes that one day a local found an injured boar and unsure of where to take it took it to the local Buddist temple. The temple took the boar in and cared it back to full health and it carried on living in the temple grounds. The locals heard of this and started taking the injured animals there. One day a local found an abandoned tiger cub whose mum had been killed by poachers. They took it to the temple who looked after it and it carried on living with the monks ... read more

Chris and I finally made it to the dreaded Khao San road-- where all stinky, stingy backpackers must eventually turn up and submit to the ultimate tourist trap. It wasn't quite as I expected-- much more clean than fellow travelers had warned me (did they miss the trash piles of Laos and Vietnam?? At least Thailand has a sanitation system!) and full of waaaaaay more people than I could have imagined. Right there in the middle of the City of Angels is a self-sustained pocket of foreigners' playground-- bars pouring endless drinks, music pumping out on the streets, vendors lined as far as the eye can see, offering everything from clothing to books to jewelery to cds (I could go on, I won't)... It was almost disgustingly overwhelming after a few minutes. Luckily, we didn't stay ... read more
