On way to GOLDEN TRIANGLE Wednesday 17th October - Up at 6.00 and down to breakfast. Had a short walk and then Mr N took me to the Chiang Mai bus station. Ticket but had to wait about an hour for the 9.30 bus. No air con but was comfortable and breezy. About 10.30 the police got on the bus to check the locals' identifications - I didn't get asked for anything. Then arrived at Chiang Rai about 12.50 and had a wait and left at 1.30. Went through a couple of nice towns and arrived Chiang Saen, about 3.00. Off the bus and got a tuk tuk and after visiting a damaged Stupa (one in Vientiane) headed along the Mekong River to the village of Sopuraka and booked into the Golden Home Guest Home. Had ... read more

I walked back to my room with 2 cups of extremely strong espresso served in plastic cups from a street vendor. His cart was attached to the side of a motorcycle and he precariously balanced the cups in a plastic bag so I could carry them without burning my hands. The plastic bad swung at my side as I strolled through the market on my way back to the room. Centrifugal force kept the coffee in the cups and I enjoyed semi warm coffee while overlooking Burma and the river from my balcony. They did the trick of giving me motivation to tackle my first full at the Nothernmost Point of Thailand. Things flowed smoothly and uneventfully on the Thai side of the border. The officials were as friendly as officials could be and in no ... read more

We would meet @ 2PM in front of the 7-11 @ the border. It really amazes me how 7-11 has completely covered Thailand. There is also a KFC, McDonalds and Pizza Hut pretty much everywhere. I have an indellible memory of being in Chaing Mai and walking past a young Thai Lady in classical dress outside a restaurant. She was obviosly a restaurant employee and had a menu in her hands. Her greeting shocked and amused me. "Wercum to Pizza Hut kaaa" I still cant decide if capitalism is good for Thailand. Rather if I like it or now - good or bad is niether important nor of any concern of mine - it's happening! The welcoming attitude toward western culture has been in place here since the reign of RAMA V. This was the son ... read more

And so it seems that God did bless her - bless the both uf us! The bus was not sold out so once we left the station, she maneuvered herself into the aisle seat of a 3-seater that had no middle occupany nor a big farang in the window seat. No words were exchanged between us but a smile that said much more than either of us could have managed with the language difference. Although the manner of travel I previously boasted about to Will Howe wasn't totally regrettable, I did commit to myself tha the trip back would be by air. I arrived in Mae Sai after another meal of Grab Pao Moo at a rest stop. It was about 6PM in the Mae Sai Bus Station - right on time. A motorcycle taxi ride ... read more

That was to be our only rest stop and in another 2 hours we pulled into Chaing Mai train station. I commented to my seat-mate that we were only 3 hours late - "I tell you 1 hour!" - Mai Geng! "I'm flying back to Bangkok" - her only negative comment. "I had the same idea" - sealed my future travel plans. Little did I know that my journey to Mae Sai was only a little more than half-way over. Being one of the last to disembark the bus, I was able to observe and analyze the tuk-tuk hawkers and picked one who wasn't too aggressive, but still motivated. When I stepped off my plans went out the window. 3 drivers descended on me and my mark was lost in the melee. "Where you go?" "Ja ... read more

The sky was beginning to brighten with that pre-dawn glow as we piled into the double-decker bus parked outside Sila-At train station. I wondered how far we actually were from Ching Mai and if the official looking man's command/statement would prove true. "I tell you 1 hour!" I doubted it ... but we all went along with the program without any complaints voiced. Perhaps everyone was still half-asleep and assumed they must be dreaming! Anyway ... I was just happy I could dectect no negative energy being voiced in English or any other language. We were rollong in no time and would eventually be in Chaing Mai. I remember the phone ringing in the room while I was dead alseep. Jet lag is a drag. I am in Bangkok now - day after my arrival. I'm ... read more

I was drifting in and out of consciousness when the porter knocked. "Change Da Bat" I knew what that meant and happily evacuated the cabin so he could have free movement to arrange my sleeping compartment. The Chinese gentleman who was to be my Berth-mate was displaying some unusual respiratory cadence. Internally I was preparing myself for the potential evening of snoring serenades so ingested 1 Tylenol PM and 2 Valerian Root capsules. Only the Lower Berth was prepared for sleeping when I returned to the cabin and the Chinese gentleman's belongings were in teh hallway. "I sleep alone?" "Chai", was the answer with a solemn nod. WOW - things were really looking up! I get the whole cabin to myself! Even with sleep aid it is normal for me to wake on the Overnight Train ... read more

The lag settled in a little outside Bang Sue once the rock of the train became consistant. I was trruggling to stay awake with my book or the I-Pod. I allowed my thoughts to wander through memories of the day and a half in Bangkok. This was certainly a new trip with some familiar places, but definately NEW. My first experience on Thai soil this time was fresh. I hadn't realized until just before touch-down that we would not be landing at the familiar Don Muang, but at the new international airport built with much controversy over Taksin's corruption. Suvarnabhumi Airport proved to provide a smooth departure and I breezed through customs and baggage claim but am embarrassed to admit that I got hooked by the taxi hawkers inside the terminal and ended up paying triple ... read more

Hua Lumphong hadn't changed much. I bought some corn fritters from the same station cart as usual ... one of these times I'll have to try her "Corn In A Cup" - looks exciting! Upon arrival at my First Class cabin, I foune one man and three women already occupying it. The man excused their presence and did his best to ask in English if I would be willing to accomodate switching berths. This was done while struggling through what I believe was a Norweigan accent. I settled into my new berth, the cabin to be shared with a timid Asian man who I concluded to be of Chinese heritage based on the printing of the magazine he was reading. It appeared I traded an upper berth to the Norweigan for a lower berth with the ... read more
