Background: In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan. Taiwan reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1946 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within the governing structure. In 2000, Taiwan underwent its first peaceful transfer of power from the Nationalist to the Democratic Progressive Party. Throughout this period, the island prospered and became one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China - specifically the question of eventual unification - as well as domestic political and economic reform.

It all started out with a Skype video call. Bobby discussed his willingness to skip work and jack up a 4day whirlwind tour of his home nation. The onus was then on me to go through the motions of booking flights and arranging visas. Even though it sounds hard to believe, it took me a frustrating 8hours of running around to organise my flight and re-entry visa. Japan can not be underestimated in this respect. Paper work, inflexibility to bend the rules and unclear instructions are just three things which add up to a lot of fluffing around, even for the [View Full Entry]

Night Market Asia » Taiwan » Taipei » Zhuwei
Going to the Night Market: The other day we went to the night market in Taipei called Shilin. I went into a shop with lots of shoes and I bought some runners. The store was not built in a mall it was built in a stand on the sidewalk. It was very small. When we got hungry we went to a corn dog stand. It was small. It had many lights and was very hot and they put out a display of them. There was original, pepper and cheese. I had the original one. After we were done eating we went [View Full Entry]

My mom helps me with typing my stories. I just don’t know how this whole idea started about traveling but I am excited. I told my class we were going to Thailand and they said “cool”. I showed the class on the map and we talked about it. My mom came and told the class where we were going to take a train to Chiang Mai. After that day we went and packed. We packed clothes and some games. Video games and music and Polly Pocket stuff. Because we would sit on the plane for 18 hours and if we [View Full Entry]

Ai-yo…. Being tired has a new meaning after navigating thousands of people for a while. Take the Shilin Night Market… I love markets and I really love the mood of the night markets…a whole undercurrent of humanity that runs strong in the streets. One of the things I really wanted to show the kids and have them experience was a night market. We took the MRT (mass rapid transit) a few stations down the line towards Taipei City to check out a huge night market there. The train proved a really effective and mostly un-scary means of getting around. I definitely [View Full Entry]

The damned roosters weren’t the only creatures up early this morning. Miles got up this morning with one thing on his mind….taking Jake (w.’s pup) for a scooter ride. The fun of this is that taking Jake out requires tying him to the back of the scooter on a lead and driving the scooter up the mountain with pup trailing behind. Miles of course thinks this is the most fun thing ever! He loves the scooter and will do anything to get a chance to ride it. Marrin also loves the scooter, but as she is developing a bit of a [View Full Entry]
