Saturday, 29th October 2016 Jinguashi - I made a visit with my sister some 10 years ago and I was determined to trace back the journey once again. The weather today was quite unlike yesterday. Plenty of dark clouds and rain even though it did really help to bring down the temperatures. From Taipei Station, I hopped on to a train to Ruifang before bussing through the rest of the journey to Jinguashi. On the way, my bus passed through Jiufen where it was overrun with tourists despite the wet weather. I was quietly hoping that the crowds would thin down at my destination. At the Gold Museum where I alighted, I parted NT80 to commence my visit. The crowds comprised mainly Taiwanese - were manageable. I followed one of the free guided tours to gain ... read more

It was still raining lightly when we woke next morning but we were planning a day at Yangmingshan National Park and a bit of cooling misty rain wasn't going to stop us. The park covers 114 square Klms, and has thick forests mountains (just), hot springs (13 in total) and acres of rolling grass hills. It was once the centre of the armed resistance movement in Northern Taiwan after Taiwan was ceded to Japan in 1895. Old fortifications from that era dot the park as well as many Japanese pillboxes from the Second World War. The park was easy to get to - a couple of subway stations away and a half hour bus ride. The bus was full of older Taiwanese - the couple we spoke to go to the park most days to walk ... read more

Once again the view here are supposed to be stunning. I could just about make up the boundary between land, sea and clouds in the distance. And once again I was glad I had an umbrella. I really wish the weather was a little better because I tried to explore the town a bit outside of the very touristy street but it was very gloomy and the wind keep turning my umbrella inside-out (if that can be said for an umbrella). So after 2h30 I gave up. I felt humid to the bones and tired. Back to Taipei. La vue depuis ce petit village est supposée être splendide, mais aujourd'hui aussi il fait un temps à ne pas mettre un pied dehors. Je pouvais tout juste apercevoir la limite entre la montagne, la mer et les ... read more

So, the week of work was hectic and successful. I headed up to Taipei to spend the day on Saturday before I fly to the island of Borneo. I had breakfast with the gang from Pamir. What a great team of people. They found out I was headed to Taipei and planned my whole day for me! I can’t wait to get there now-sounds wonderful. I got carried away with talking (who me  ) and headed to my room a bit later than I had hoped. No sooner did I start packing than I received a call that my driver was at the front of the hotel waiting. Good bye to the lovely Ambassador hotel. If anyone is heading to Hsinchu, I highly recommend this hotel. The rooms are clean, simple, and modern. The bathrooms ... read more

Our 2nd last day in Taiwan. The railway brought us to Ruifang which we had intended to visit Shifen only a few more stops away by taking the Pingxi line. To our disappointment, there was no way we could fit our schedule in. The next train leaving for Shifen will leave in an hours’ time. Decided not to waste any more time, we took a bus instead to Jiufen, a sleepy town brought to life after City of Sadness was filmed in the area in the 1980s. 20 minutes into the journey when all the passengers alighted, “this is it!” When in doubt, follow the crowds. Anyway, I had high expectations of this place after two friends had narrated their positive experiences of the place. Sadly, it is more like a tourist enclave that was much ... read more
