Saturday, 18th August 2012 This was not a typical Saturday as we headed out of Taipei for our journey to the city of Hsinchu, about 90km southwest from where we were staying. Travelling by the TRA Chu Kang Express took a good 2 hours as the train was making frequent stops along the way. Still, it was a comfortable experience as the train meandered through the Taiwanese countryside, dotted with farms and greenery. 12.49pm. The iconic Hsinchu Train Station greeted us as soon as our train arrived. Built in 1893, two years before Japanese colonisation of Taiwan, the art-deco structure was every photographers' dreams. With about another hour to go before our connecting train to Zhuzhong (Liujia Line) and Neiwan (Neiwan Line), we headed to the Sogo Departmental Store to grab a quick lunch from Yamazaki ... read more

This short but sweet entry stands in defense of all major travel sights that are only denoted a sparse paragraph at best in the many travel books currently in existence. The Pu Tain Temple (in the Qe Fong area), though famous in the local scene, is hardly mentioned in my current standing library of texts concerning Taiwan. What exactly is it? A Temple that is no like no other and offers a great way to spend an afternoon, not to mention a chance to pray to the deity of ‘hooking up’ (under the notion of finding your future partner of course). This temple was built in 1967 by a former Hsinchu City Council member. Of course, the most famous attribute is the very imposing 120 meter high statue of Guan Gong, a military historical figure of ... read more

Taiwan is the shit! Bus gets a flat tire on the expressway? No problem...keep on truckin'. Sidewalk too crowded with people and parked scooters? No problem...walk on the road. Feel like crossing an intersection against a red light and 6-lane traffic? No problem...just step out and they'll drive around you. Taiwan is an off-the-map destination with off-the-wall traffic and out-of-this-world food. Everyone will find something enjoyable about the Ilha Formosa (Beautiful Isle). Taiwan is blessed with some of the best cuisine in the world, thanks in part to the influence of aboriginal peoples, Chinese immigrants, and Japanese occupation. While restaurant decor is usually less than desirable, the food makes up for any aesthetic shortcomings - it's cheap, aromatic, and delicious. The only exception might be stinky tofu, which looks, smells, and probably tastes like it was ... read more

Last few days have been a bit of a blur. I couldn't sleep much yesterday. Only 4 hours...seriously not enough for me. Work has taken over-are you shocked :) I have experimented with more interesting food... I had some kind of soup with pork meat battered in a fish coating. Ok, not something for me. I know that for sure!! Also, I had the rice sticks (Hsinchu is also well known for this-big exporter of them.) They were very very good. Basically it was very thin spaghetti like strands made of rice. Soy sauce, chives, garlic, and fried onions were added to the top. I even managed to eat them using chopsticks. I am seriously becoming a pro. Trust me, if I can eat spaghetti with them, I am a pro in my book. By the ... read more

People actually travel here and manage to go to work the next day? As predicted I started melting around 6pm here. By 8pm, I was in a strange fog. Not sure if I was walking forward or standing still. Either way, a good nights sleep was all I longed for. But alas, there was work to be done! I crawled into bed around midnight and when my alarm went off at 5:30, let's just say it is a good thing no one was here to hear me. The folks I've met were so kind and very very nice. Unfortunately, their English was only slightly better than my Chinese. Needless to say, work is going a bit slower than I anticipated. Food has been...interesting. The Ambassador hotel is lovely. The rooms are perfect for me, very modern ... read more
