This morning it was time to say goodbye to the best place we've stayed at in Sri Lanka. Another huge breakfast (£1.75 each) was prepared to see us on our way by the ever helpful manager. Nature Park is just £6 a night, has great rooms, bathrooms that drain, hot showers, excellent wifi, more fans than you can shake a stick at and great food (dinner £2.50 each). The manager will help you out with safaris, transport etc and is a lovely guy. Do us, him and yourselves a favour and go and stay there. A tuk tuk was the cheapest option to get to Ella and who wouldn't turn down a trip in one anyway? We'd been lazy today and had a lie in until 6 but hey, we're on holiday! We were on the ... read more

For us English it goes against the grain to walk along railway tracks, especially for a few miles but it is the norm in Ella despite signs telling you not to. I guess if you don't speak Sinhalese, Tamil or English, you can't read the signs anyway, so the Germans had a good excuse! So that's how our afternoon went, our morning started in Udawalawe. We've eaten too much in Udawalawe. Our host keeps cooking us large meals and there's always so many dishes! So it was hard to fit in breakfast despite it being very good. This morning it was time to leave the best accommodation we'd experienced in Sri Lanka so far and were chatting with our host whilst waiting for his mate to arrive with the tuk-tuk to take us to Ella. He ... read more

Hello all! My plan is to try and keep this brief and not too much of a ramble...if it turns into that then I apologise in advance and don't blame you for not keeping up to date with it! So after a pretty hectic last two months we finally set off to Sri Lanka to begin our adventure but before I get into the travelling bit there are a few people I want to say thank you to first! First of all thank you to all of you that we've bored to tears over the last couple of years talking about our plans which probably never seemed like they were going to materialise...but they have so enjoy work whilst we don't have to for a year!!! Thanks to Andy, Danni, Izzy and Skye for a great ... read more

Day 10: Wednesday 13 September - Nuwara Eliya - Wirawila Bird Sanctuary via Ella This morning we travelled from Nuwara Eliya down the mountain and stopped at the town of Ella which is a town full of backpackers. We had a look around and then headed out to the Nine Arches train bridge which was built by the British in 1929. The bridge is made of rock and concrete but no steel. We then dropped further into the alley and found a lunch stop. After lunch we were met by a safari 4X4 with an open back on the ute suitable for spotting animals. We were of to drive through the Wirawila Bird Sanctuary which is a reserve located in Southern, Sri Lanka. The estimate terrain elevation above sea level is 27 metres. Variant forms ... read more

One of the attractions of Ella is Little Adams Peak. Adams Peak (the real one) is famous throughout Sri Lanka both as a holy site for pilgrims and also a hike for tourists to watch the sunrise. Well Little Adams Peak (LAP) is a lot shorter but great views from the top at sunrise. So why am I telling you this, well, to prove he doesn't need me to get lost, Chris set off to walk it this morning. He did this believing I'd run it as I was planning to do, unaware I'd decided a sleep in was order of the day. Just before breakfast he arrived back, hot and tired. Seems he had missed the turn off and carried on along the main road towards Colombo. Luckily a caring tuk tuk driver stopped and ... read more

Today is the second half of the Great Train Journey, this time from Nurawa Eliya to Ela, But before get ahead of ourselves, the morning. Up early and decided to go for a run to the lake that is just out of town here but seems to be quite a local attraction. Uneventful until I got to the lake where I picked up a stray dog who proceeded to follow me all the way back to the guesthouse, probably 3.5km, running alongside me as if he was trained. Locals, including the police, who were out of force for some reason, all found this pretty amusing. I found myself plotting how I could smuggle a sausage out of breakfast to feed her Then as the effects of heat and running took hold started plotting on paying the ... read more

The train ride from Ella to Haputale is only 3 hours. We decided to take the first train around 6:30am in order to have a full day to enjoy Haputale and the surrounding tea fields. There were not many people waiting for the train this early, and most passengers were foreign tourists. When the train entered the station, we hopped in and found 3 empty seats in a 3rd class-car. It felt comfortable and spacious so we did not bother looking for the 2ndclass area. But 2 stops down the road, hundreds of people (locals) got in and it felt pretty cramped! This was right during the New Year Holiday and many people were catching the train for Colombo (12 hours) and so they were more than eager to grab a seat. My parents had so ... read more

On respire. En 5 minutes, nous sommes sortis de la rue principale, et on se retrouve dans des champs de thé. Je crois que c’était ... read more
