Leaving Korea Part 2 Jeremy: Immediately after we put in our 30 days notice, we headed for the old Silla capital of Gyeongju. (Jen: Getting there was in itself quite an adventure. We had called the English tourist line to find out the best way to get there. We were told we could take the express bus to Nopo-dong where we would catch the next bus to the capital. This would save us about 40 minutes time and we were in need of all the extra time we could get. We stood waiting in front of the line for the 2002 bus. Everyone around us was hopping on buses, but the one we needed didn’t seem to come. We spent over an hour waiting for it and it was supposed to run every 20 minutes. Finally ... read more

Leaving Korea-Part 1 (Jeremy writing) It has been an interesting few weeks to say the least, and there is much to chronicle. I will start by saying that we are making this post from Japan. Our teaching job in Korea became untenable, so we made the move to the place where we had originally intended to come. How we got here is a story in itself that will require several posts. So I will begin in the beginning: our gradual slide into extreme dislike for our job. (Jen writing) My slide was not gradual and it started long ago. Everything you could say about what you did not want in a manger, he epitomized. To be brief about my numerous annoyances, he was a habitual liar and only did things to the school’s detriment. l (Jeremy writing) Jen loves travel, and so do I, so I thought a great birthday present for her would be a trip to Seoul. I did some research, booked a train there for Friday night, got a hotel in Itaewon (a suburb of Seoul), and booked a tour of the Demilitarized Zone. Seoul is just a three hour train ride north, so right after work we grabbed our pre-packed bags and took the one hour subway ride to Busan Station. We arrived in plenty of time and shortly boarded our train. Jen had packed ham sandwiches, Dr. Peppers, and beer. We were the envy of the train. It had been 4 ½ months since a ham and cheese sandwich and it tasted great laced with cilantro. We sipped our beers covertly like nervous teenagers, not ... read more

Our trip to Jeju: July 31-August 4 We were unable to access our live journal for so long there is some more catching up to do. Our school was generous enough to allot three entire days of summer vacation from August 2-4, so we decided to use that bountiful block of time to take some sort of trip. Our wise employers rightly decided to only give us about a month head start on planning-they were right in that because they knew about the vacation time long before we did and were able to book their trips without worrying about us taking up valuable tickets and hotels. So we were in a mad dash to book a flight on what turned out to be vacation time for every Korean and Japanese man, woman, and child. We considered ... read more

(Jen writing…) Well, it has been a very long time since we’ve been able to login and update this journal. I assure you it was not because we’re lacking stories to talk about. There have been a bunch of hysterical things that have happened to us over the last two months so we will try our best to recollect them now. The Beach: We have spent a good portion of our weekends at the beach since the weather has been so nice. This is a completely different experience from that which we were accustomed to. First of all, because I grew up in Florida right on the beach I have taken it for granted until now. I loved going to the beach because it was relaxing and peaceful. Here, it is almost completely opposite from that. ... read more

(Jen writing) Well as many of you have noticed (and commented on) we have not updated our journal in quite some time. The reason for this was actually not pure laziness. We have not been able to access the site from overseas for about a month and a half. We had to wait until I was in the U.S. in order to switch it over. The new site is http://jeren.blogspot.com/ We hope to be updating this one quite often. We hope everyone is doing well. We miss you all and hope to see you soon. School Life (Jen writing) Well, another week is almost done. I certainly have my days where teaching frustrates me, but I have to say I do like it more than I thought I would. The children here, for the most ... read more

Monday's are a real bad day to travel in South Korea if you are a tourist. Almost none of the touristy things run or are closed. It seems that monday is back to work day in South Korea. This is partly the problem we had when Jeonga and me arrived on Sunday in Mokpo to catch a ferry to Jeju island. Luckily, one of the three ferry services from Mokpo going to Jeju Si had one ferry leaving monday, 15:00. This meant one night in the dodgiest little Minbak i've ever seen (But only $12AUD/night).   For all of you looking to travel to South Korea and use a bank card from a foreign bank, you will find that your card will not work in most atms here. The only sure place to find an atm ... read more

My lonely planet guide tells me that hiking is a national past time in South Korea, and i've found it to be true. The past five days have been what I really call to be a holiday.  I've had the pleasure of finally meeting and getting to know my friend from South Korea in person. I've been to a string of really nice islands off the coast near Gunsan for one day. Next day was to a provincial park where we pretty much rock climbed up a 673 m plus mountain. Next day was to folk village. Next to   I'll update this later... Sleep time.... read more
