Well, the flight went pretty well; I had two seats to myself so I could lay down a little bit, although it was still not ideal for sleeping. The group of teachers is great! Everyone is friendly and nice, and no one is left out. We've already done a little walking around Daejon, and are going to head back out this afternoon. I'm starting to feel a little tired (seeing as it would be about midnight Toronto time and it's 1pm here) and hoping to make it through the day before crashing. Food here is INTERESTING! There was fish and rice for breakfast (fortunately it felt more like dinnertime to me) and then fish and rice again for lunch. At least this time there were also potatoes. :) ------ So what an interesting afternoon! A group ... read more

This weekend, the Korean Fulbright office treated our group to a trip to Songni-san, a national park in the heart of Korea ("san" means mountain, so it's obviously a great place to hike and has several trails). It was a fabulous visit, replete with plenty of relaxation, hiking, and good food. We left early on Friday, and it was about a three-hour bus ride. When we got there, Mrs. Shim, Korea Fulbright's executive director, took us all to lunch at a local restaurant. We all sat on the floor, cross-legged and shared all the little dishes that were placed on our tables (the traditional way of eating in Korea-- you get your own rice bowl, sometimes soup bowl, and then you share all the different dishes on the table). That afternoon, Nika (another Fulbrighter) and I ... read more

Seoul, South Korea June 30, 2006 Sean: As many of you know, I spent two years in the Land of the Morning Calm and retain many positive memories of my time here. Between the year spent teaching English to the nation’s school children and another year stationed near the DMZ with the US Army, I really enjoyed Korea and was excited about returning. I had also been chatting up the country for so long that the enthusiasm infected my lovely wife as well. So we are both eager to be landing here and look forward to spending a few weeks ‘splorin’ the peninsula. The two things that I remember most were the food and the people. The wide array of dishes that are offered on just about every corner is varied, tasty, and fairly inexpensive. And ... read more

It is nearly lunch break, and I have just spent two hours in the studio. Korean man sings dramatically, jokingly, then quickly and abruptly explains the jist of whatever theme we are discussing in that unit. Joke. Joke. Explanation. All in Korean. Turns to me, makes small talk in decent, but still broken English, and then says - Brie? And I say my line in English. "The shark in the movie was swimming around in the seawater." "The shark in the movie was swimming around in the seawater." Always twice, and always with an attempt to act out each word in the sentence. Back to the main camera, as the Korean guy goes on with his long-winded explanations. It's silly, but actually well done, with subtitles and computer generated graphics added later. I feel as though ... read more

Despite the rudeness of the people I really enjoyed our short time here in Korea. It is mainly the older people that seemed inconsiderate to us but I think that is just their culture and we are not used to that. On the subways or even on the street, they will push you out of the way without even an "excuse me"(or the Korean equivalent). If you are in front of them in line they will literally grab you and move you out of the way. On the way to Seoul, I accidentally put my train ticket into the machine and couldnt get it back. I explained this to the man in the ticket booth and he basically told me "Too bad, you shouldn't have put it in there in the first place" and made me ... read more

Will a blog really work out? Is my small life here in South Korea reallly worth a "travel blog" attempt? As much as I occasionally feel like shrugging off my foreigner persona, I know that I will look back on this year in Asia as a sparkling moment, or a test of bravery and self-discipline. To write self discipline feels a bit militant, or stoic, but living out of context...much on my own, I realize how easy it is to slip into a negligent lifestyle. How many foreigners here began with the same enthusiasm - attempting to learn Korean, absorb the cultural idiosyncrasies *many phrases I use might not make sense, admittedly flaky with my wording* and find themselves stuck on the wall. Drunk with other foreigners, nonchalant with traveling. This, of course, is simply ... read more

We spent all this time on Thursday preparing for the climb for Fuji, buying gloves, food, rain gear, etc. I really wasnt up for it but agreed to do it anyway since I am such a nice travel buddy and I know how much Ben really wanted to climb. I will admit though that I really gave him a hard time about it and there were a couple of arguments...(Sorry Ben:()When it got closer thought, I became really excited and couldnt wait to climb. So we got everything together and went to the bus station and we missed the last bus that night out to Fuji. Apparently the schedule on the internet was wrong. We were so dissapointed. I guess I will never see the sun rise from under the clouds on Fuji. The night ... read more

So we left off after just arriving at Chris's in Korea. We stayed with Chris the first night (there was only one bed so he ended up sleeping on the floor....the appartment is just one room) and then his friend Tim gave us his appartment for the rest of the week and stayed with his girlfriend Becky. They're the coolest people, Tim once spent a couple months following the Greatful Dead on tour. The past 4 days we've seen some of the sights in Korea and a lot of the bars. During the days we went to the business district and all there was to do was play in a fountain of water! We also found a market with cheap clothes and the most disgusting smells, which we partly attributed to the dried octopus they sell ... read more

Oh yes... today's update pertains to nothing except the wonderful experience that is bungee. Forget any silly fears you may have, forget all those drunken drops you've made onto a sidewalk, this is the single most wonderful fall you will ever take. The taleteller here is a man who loves adrenaline but is dead scared of everything. However, loving to challenge this, he went bungee jumping. Much to his delight, he loved it. There's a few photos from his perspective as he was the first jumper of the pair... so undfortunately this time there was no one around to show his pertrified face as he lept over the edge of a 45m tower... but, next time, next time. There are only a few photos on this update, so please check them for updates on this whacky ... read more
