So here's the scoop since Thurs.... So since I last wrote, we've eaten rice, been offered kimchi, eaten rice, been offered more kimchi, and eaten rice.... And while I'm trying to make that sound funny, it's absolutely true! Friday we went on two short field trips. In the morning we went to Happy City, which if you read last year's blog, you know that it was a stop in the middle of a road to see a big empty field where they're planning to build a city. This year, we got to take a tour of the administrative building for the planning of the city. There were models, and korean explanations of all the rooms, and a video (believe it or not that was in English!) to explain their intent. The Korea Land Corporation (KLC) is ... read more

So things went a little better today. The students spoke a little more today, and less Korean because I threatened to give out yellow stickers. Seemed to work! We also switched classes for two periods, so I had another class to work with, and they were a lot less shy. We also worked on our entry for the Talent Show which is being put on Saturday afternoon. I decided that we could do a little mini-play about the arrival of the kids at camp. We ran through it this afternoon, and everyone got a part to play. Bill, my most talkative one, has the lead role, and I think he'll do okay if he just slows down when he speaks. He's trying to rush through and is having difficulty pronouncing all the words. I think we ... read more

So I got my class today. I have 6 girls and 3 boys, which I think is unusual, seeing as the boys outnumber the girls at the camp this year. They seem nice enough, but are incredibly quiet! They don't seem to want to speak at all if they can help it! I was a little lenient today with the use of Korean, but tomorrow I'm going to have to come down hard on them since there are two girls who whisper back and forth to each other in Korean every chance that they get. The strange thing is, I was told that I would have a high group. Not only was I told that from the beginning of camp, but also by the head teacher today, who said she made sure I had a high ... read more

Well, the onslaught of monsters happened today. The morning went pretty well -- the hall of the dorms was turned into a mock arrivals floor. The students arrived at the front door and received their passport and room assignment. They then had to go through the fake metal detectors and walk by the fake police with the fake metal-detecting wand. I felt bad for some of the kids because they really thought it was real! They looked a little scared, and didn't realize that the metal detector was made of foam and the fake police were actually ELTs (English Language Teacher). I was in charge of stamping passports with the entry stamp (which read "Departed -- KLC English Camp 2007"). Next they walked to the bank where they received one KLC camp dollar which they then ... read more

It's been a long day....and it's only 7:30pm. I guess that's because I've been awake since 6am. No, not by choice. Anyone who knows me knows that I would not choose to awaken at 6am unless I absolutely had to, to catch a flight or something for work, perhaps. No, I awoke this morning at 6am because I could no longer sleep in the incredibly hot room. When we arrived yesterday, the rooms were stifling. The a/c came on partway through the day, but then it must have turned off sometime through the night. It was hot in there! I had awoken 3-4 times throughout the night, tossed and turned, sweating here, there and everywhere. Got up to use the bathroom once, but was able to go back to sleep, until finally at 6am, I couldn't ... read more

Well, we made it! After an excruciatingly long flight, where I got bumped no less than 17 times as I was sitting in an aisle seat, we arrived in Korea. I had a hard time sleeping, more due to the fact that it was cramped (as usual) and I couldn't get into a comfortable sleeping position. I slept a little on the bus ride to Daejon, but found the bus air conditioning a little too chilly. Oh well! We got our room assignments, and I have to say that cleanliness is not the staff's forte at this location. I will not be walking into the toilet room without shoes anytime soon; the floor is filthy and apparently the last people to use the room missed peeing into the toilet by a mile. :P Gross! After showering ... read more

Dangerous when wet! Asia » South Korea » Taejon By Korea BoundApril 28th 2007Sue and Steve On Saturday my swim team competed in their championship meet on an American army base about 2 hours from Daejon. We were excited because they had fritos (which they don't carry in Korea). I am glad that the season is over so I can focus onmy classes again, but I love my team and will miss them very much. I had 12 girls who worked really hard, and really improved their technique and their times. My top two were Emily who came 2nd in 50m and 100m breaststroke (breaking her own school records) as well as coming 7th overall in the tournament, and Joan who broke the school r... read more

Hi friends! We've just gotten back from our mission trip to Thailand, but I am waiting on some photos so in the meantime, here are some pictures of our students doing their stream restoration independent project for IB. They are put in groups with biologist, chemists and physisists (?) mixed together. They spent the morning doing tests on the stream, and then they have to process the results together and decide whether the stream is healthy and some strategies for improvement. You can see our school bus, and the pretty lab that I get to teach Chemistry in. If you are a jazz music fan, my very good friend Rob is playing bass for this amazing 13 year old Jazz singer with pipes like Ella Fitzgerald. You can check her out at www.nikkionline.ca. Its worth the ... read more

Ok sorry for the cheesy title; I couldn't resist! Steve had a great time coaching the Junior Varsity boys team this year. Although it was a big time commitment, we made it through ok! This team isn't quite the same calibre as his Weston Collegiate team, but they improved a ton, and they just adored Steve (I'm his wife so I can say that). I thought I would throw in a couple of pictures from their last game: the other team never showed, so they got to play each other. So any kid you see is on his team. I also threw in some photos of our cheerleaders ('cause its still a weird phenomenon for me!) and because some of my favorite students are on the team. Enjoy a slice of American High School Sports!... read more

Hello one and all, We hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas break! We are excited to head off to Thailand, singapore and Malaysia; especially to meet up with Sue's sister and her family. We had a nice quiet Christmas together, just the two of us. We opened gifts, went out for dinner and downtown to see the lights, and took in the new James Bond movie (not very Christmassy, but that's ok, there's no snow!). We are thinking of all of you fondly, especially this time of year. I hope you like the pictures! Love Sue and Steve... read more
