I AM HERE! From the time I left my house in the morning on August 1 at 8:30am to when I arrived at my apartment here on August 2 at 10:30pm I had been travelling for 19 hours taking into consideration time zones. I was fortunate enough to meet an English teacher that was going back for her fourth year while I was waiting for my flight in Vancouver. She gave me the rundown of a basic day here in Korea and how you go about shopping and getting around. She even gave me money to use the phone when I got to South Korea so I could call Christy! Luckily she got to sit in first class, but I cannot complain because the seat I was given in economy class was right after first class ... read more

In my last entry, I said I was headed out of Daejeon, but a stomach flu kept me in bed for an entire two days! At first, a doctor even thought it might be swine flu =/ But with my trip effectively shortened to 8 days, I had to really move it to squeeze in all that I wanted to do. I would be in Daejeon for a couple more days before and after my trip to Daegu, and I saw a lot of local sights. Temples, Mountains, and lotus festivals, it was nothing huge compared to some of the sights we saw in Southeast Asia, but it was a very good way to get a feel for what the Korean landscape is like. We went to a huge once-every-5-days market, where I picked up some ... read more

After a late night flight and some worries about SK customs (the nice man at customs didn't charge me for bringing too much duty-free alcohol), I arrived in South Korea. Incheon airport is on the very northwest corner of South Korea, and Daejeon is smack-dab in the middle, so it was a 3-hour express bus ride to get to my uncle's place. Daejeon is a medium sized city (1.5 mm pop out of 48mm total, compared to 10.5 mm for Seoul), and it's mostly a residential area. There is a "Techno-valley" that is Korea's equivalent of Silicon Valley, as well as a shopping district that evokes images of Tokyo's Shibuya. Daejeon, and Korea in general, has many low-lying mountains, and often has beautiful fog rising off of it's many rivers and hugging its uneven terrain. Korea ... read more

So the Korean school system is developmentally challenged. Just last week, they had one week of classes to finish off the previous school year. Needless to say, most teachers just wasted time in classes, most abandoning their classes. Or at least my English co-teachers did. It was almost good to hear the voices of screaming teenagers stampeding up the stairs. Until they got to class. The headache and deep sighs came rushing back. I guess I remember being a kid though...barely. It's funny how quickly your frame of mind gets replaced with that of an adult's. I got invited to the school retreat with all the other teachers the following week. I reluctantly said yes but since I figured I was going to sit at school doing nothing, I might as well go. At the very ... read more

Hello everyone, I don’t really have too much to say. You know this is going to be a good blog when I start with that. We went to Costco last weekend to do our monthly grocery shopping. This inevitably took up the bulk of our weekend considering us hicks had to huff it into the big city. I tried to search for a raincoat, much to Jonathan’s delight. He really likes shopping with me; we don’t fight every time, honestly. Apparently he thinks I have no idea how to shop for a raincoat. He may be right. All the sport store raincoats will work but they are far too expensive and not very fashion forward. I ended up buying a coat from Costco, if it is rain proof I have yet to find out. I’ll let ... read more

It's almost Halloween here in Korea (and I can say it like this because for me, October 31st begins 13-16 hours before it begins for anyone in the States). Although Korea is decoratively engaged in the holiday - with orange and black colors present in many buildings and small pumpkins adorning shop windows, it is not a holiday that is widely celebrated. Sure, they know what it is, and all my students know that kids in the USA go door to door and get TONS of candy on Halloween, but Koreans don't take cultural ownership of the occasion. Regardless, I just purchased bagfuls of chocolate and candy to give to my students during class on Friday - hey, I'm American. Before my candy run to Home Plus at 10:00 tonight, I had some other noteworthy experiences ... read more

Yesterday, while searching The Korea Times news online for debate topics for my students, I stumbled upon an article about Korean adoptees in the editorial section. The article was featured as part of a book about Modern Korea written by Andrei Lankov. This is just another example of how much I continue to learn about myself and my surroundings on a daily basis. What was most amazing to me about this article, is how accurately it depicts Korean views towards adoptees and how accurately this generalized piece of work - about the 200,000 Koreans who have been adopted in the last 50 years - described me as an individual. The last part of the article really resonated with me. Incidentally, last night, I also became a member of G.O.A.L, an NPO/NGO created to help overseas Korean ... read more

Helllloo everyone! So it has been a fairly tame two weeks here in the Republic of Korea (or the Rok - a popular term among Foreigners). Two weeks ago Jonathan and I went to Bososang or (Boso mountain) Fortress. It was on a very beautiful mountain with a wicked view of our town. We spent five hours there. I had exercised some bad judgment by deciding to look for wrapping paper for my mom’s Birthday gift after walking around for five hours instead of before. Jonathan was not happy about having to find wrapping paper in our small town. Thankfully I found a Morning Glory and was able to locate the wrapping paper after some time. Of course I was so tired that I didn’t realize until I got home that the wrapping paper said congratulations ... read more

The peace sign. A famous symbol all over the world, but nowhere is it more prevalent than in Korea (and possibly all of Korea’s Asian neighbors - as I saw it being used just as much in Japan this past weekend). In 90% of the photos that are taken in Korea/of Korean people - there will inevitably be a peace sign in the mix. Paper, rock, scissors - the ultimate decider. In my W level classes, every time we are doing presentations where the kids are required to speak in front of the class - they inevitably fight over the order in which they present. How else could such arguments be settled, but with such solid and conclusive logic as scissors cut paper, paper covers rock… Vowels. Hangul, the Korean alphabet, is all phonetic. And it ... read more
