I was up early this morning (a little before 4 am, in fact) so I could make it to the Perth international airport for my flight to Singapore. I got to use the Qantas lounge and that was nice - they even had a barista on duty to make espresso drinks. Before leaving Australia I exchanged my thirty seven leftover Australian dollars for Singapore dollars. Each one is worth a little less than a US dollar. The flight was smooth and we got into Singapore on time. There are a series of steps one must take when arriving in a new country (Singapore is the name of the city AND the country). By the time I got through passport control and collected my bag, cleared customs, used an ATM to get local currency, stopped at the ... read more

Our day began with a beautiful run in the Singapore Botanical Gardens. These gardens are what the entire island of Singapore was once made up of. They are one of the only few areas that are protected by the provisions of the World Heritage Site recognition within Singapore. The locals not only use these gardens to get their daily exercise and walk their dogs:) but they are considered to be healing and tranquil. We found them to be both. (Sorry, no photos as we could not run with our camera. I also wish that we could have "scratch and sniff" on this blog to share with you the aromas that are prevalent throughout this area.) Our next outing this morning involved a trip to an older part of the city to purchase our bus tickets to ... read more

Singapore is a very unique place. Despite the Chinese being the majority, we have been raised to respect every culture's differences, and to be more understanding towards all the different races and nationalities. Thus, when a different race is celebrating, we all celebrate together as a nation. However, the holiday in Singapore is gazetted such that each race is only allowed to have 2 days of the year designated as a public holiday for their major celebration. For the Chinese - Chinese New Year, Malay - Hari Raya Aidifiltri and Hari Raya Haji, India - Deepavali and Vesak Day, and for the Eurasians - Good Friday and Christmas. For the Chinese, it was decided that the 2 holidays to be used on Chinese New Year. Hence, every year, the celebration for Chinese New Year is tremendous, ... read more

CLEAN! My first word to describe Singapore. Only a three hour flight away from North Vietnam and I can tell I am in a totally different world. So organised and sooooo clean! Singapore reminds me very much like Hong Kong but less busy. I only spent a couple of days here so didn't do an awful lot but have a really good opinion of Singapore from my short stay. I stayed in a ten bed dorm in China Town. I thought this would be a bit of a noisy hostel as it was really near Boat Quay but it turned out to be very quiet, but a nice hostel all the same. The first night, I walked down Boat Quay towards Marina Bay Sands with Maikel, a Dutch guy I met in my hostel. We went ... read more

Porozstawiane s... read more

Singapore was our last stop in Asia.... Whilst researching accomodation and things to do we soon found out that it did not seem to cater well for those on a budget....but always up for a challenge we set to work investigating and were soon proved wrong! We found a hostel that had reasonably priced dorm rooms and when we arrived we were impressed with how clean and new it was. The location was perfect-right near Lavender MRT stop. The train system was set up just like Dubai...it was so easy and cheap to get around and it was really clean and air conditioned! We spent our first evening exploring what was near to our hostel....lots of little restaurants with plastic tables and chairs outside..they all seemed to be heaving with big groups of people. There also ... read more

Early start this morning at 05.30H and out to the airport to catch the Singapore flight. All was very easy and relaxed. Had a rather average airline meal on the Quantas flight but it passed the time. Did a couple of holding circuits before landing at Changi and then caught a taxi to our hotel. The city has changed a lot in the five years since our last visit - especially with the completion of the Bay Sands complex and associated gardens. Wangz Hotel is a circular building of 5 floors on Ousram Road some 10-15 minutes walk from Chinatown. It is a 'boutique' hotel and is very comfortable yet modern and stylish. I think that we are goingto enjoy our time here. After checking in and unpacking, we headed off to Chiatown where we found ... read more

I am often asked why I travel as I do. This question has left me flummoxed at the best of times leaving me stammering a half hearted response that sounds more contrived than truthful. To be honest, travelling is so much more than an act or a verb used to describe moving from one place to another. For me travelling encapsulates a way of life that seems impossible at home. Above all, to me, travelling offers me a sense of freedom which is constrained by my real life at home by obligations not held when away from home. Even time can be seemingly controlled. Life can be sped up, slowed down and may seem to even stand still if you will it to do so. Above all, travel demands that you remain in a perpetual state ... read more

Tuesday 20th Arrived at our hostel, Fivestones, and greeted by a smiling face and informed of the house rules. Take shoes off, keep clothes on. We were then shown to our room. We had booked a standard double. To say the room was compact would be generous. You couldn't swing a cat, even if you cut off the poor moggy's tail. The room was 9" wider than the bed and 3 feet longer. We would have to take turns to breath out! We were also shown the showers, segregated much to my dismay. Later we went for a walk into China town and found all the plastic souveniers you'd never want. We then came across the Chinese food court where there where dozens of small take away shops selling all sorts of dishes. If it grows ... read more
