I have long been fascinated about the whale sharks of Donsol. For more than a year, I have read quite a lot of writeups about these misunderstood yet Gentle Giants of the ocean. They are the largest fish in the ocean yet they do not eat fish! They are more like sharks than whales but are called whale sharks due to their enormous size. They are locally called Butandings. To me, they are one of the most adorable creatures of the sea. For many times, this trip has been rescheduled, but on the nth time, I refused. I gathered friends available for the long weekend and together, we created our own itinerary. There were 5 of us: Mayet and Rommel, my college friends. Manny, my officemate (and loyal travelmate at GXS). Christine, my underwater hockey batchmate. ... read more

The road to Sorsogon, the famed whaleshark hunters' paradise, is like a road to perdition particularly during holy week when traffic is a curse. It is a journey not for the faint-hearted- 500 km long from Manila. Traversing portions of Laguna, Batangas and Quezon, the largest province is an ordeal by itself. This time however, we thought of dividing the trip as our tired bodies- aging as they are, badly needed a rest. We made a brief stopover in Bagasbas, Daet . This place is known for its big waves- a surfer's small paradise. I had been to the place two times before and up to now, I am still mesmerized by the ... read more

I just had a recent trip to Donsol, Sorsogon. Donsol used to be a rustic and sleepy town in the Bicol region. However, during the year of 1997, news regarding the existence of whalesharks (locally known as Butanding) in its waters, entailed the boom of tourists and whaleshark enthusiasts in this area. Another must-do in this town is the firefly watching at night. It's similar to the Kuala Selangor Firefly Tour in Malaysia. Here you get to experience to paddle on a serene lake, while an abundance of mangroves lined up on each side. You can hire a small banca (a makeshift boat, don't worry it is safe) or a small motorboat but i suggest that you take a banca so that you can truly experience a tranquil and romantic boat ride. Best to go on ... read more
