I’m having a staring contest with my breakfast. Quite literally. Two sausages for the eyes and half a fried egg for the mouth. That’s all I picked from the hotel buffet. And even then, I don’t feel like eating at all. Truth is, I only served myself this food to take a picture of it. “You’re not going to eat it?” Sam finally asks me. He’s a colleague, a music teacher. “I’m still full from last night,” I tell him. “After we had dinner, I went to check out this restaurant I’ve been dying to try since I read it in a magazine. And it turned out that I ate more than I can handle.” He shrugs. “Too bad. You shouldn’t have stuffed yourself full last night. You’re missing on all these great, free food.” For ... read more

Late February of this year, I had my first encounter with the whale sharks of Donsol. Called Butanding by the local folks, my awesome experience with these "vegetarian" whale sharks boosted my confidence to bring the entire family to Donsol as our summer holiday. It was the end of the "Butanding" Season, and there was a raging typhoon around the area at the time we arrived in this fishing town of Donsol. A Long Drive to the Southernmost Province of Luzon" Leaving Makati, Metro Manila as early as 5 am, we managed only 2 pitstops for a heavy breakfast and a very late lunch. Several pee stops and 10 hours of driving after, we reached Donsol, Sorsogon in the Bicol Region just before sunset. Bicol Region is the southernmost part of the major island of Luzon ... read more

Not just one sighting. Not just two whale sharks (or butandings, as they are called here). Today is my lucky day. Three whale sharks. Three sightings. Each time, the butanding "stayed" with us at least a full minute before bidding us goodbye with a gentle flip and dive . What an adrenaline rush! You think I'm a diver? To tell you honestly, I am perennially jealous reading about diver-bloggers narrate their undersea adventures. Them seeing the undersea world . The colors. The tranquility of the deep blue sea. The anticipation of meeting and encountering unknown, unnamed species. I never dreamed of doing what they do. Thought I'd never have the nerve. I'd be quite content seeing a few colorful tiny sea creatures with my grandchildren and enjoying a boat ride on a clear, peaceful day. Besides, ... read more

Lau and Shelli were still undecided last wednesday when I asked them if we were good to go. So I looked for a travel buddy in travbuddy dot com and found Victor. Seemed like a nice enough guy whos about my age. Checked his facebook page to make sure that hes not a creep. He turned out okay. So I decided to meet up with him in Donsol. But Lau and Shelli decided to go in the last minute. So the three of us went together. It was my first time to go to the Bicol region. My first time in Araneta bus station. It was absolutely crazy! All the good buses were fully booked. We ended up in a crappy bus with cramped seats. The trip was supposed to take only 10 hours but the ... read more

Here we are in 2010. For Paul it started on the 2nd as the 1st was almost entirely spent in bed, as the San Miguel Red Horse is rather strong. For us the Philippines was always going to be about diving and some of the most exciting sharks in the world. Malapascua is one of the few places where Thresher Sharks can be seen near the surface so we took the opportunity ... ... first dive 2 sharks! If you look really closely at the first video you might catch a glimpse (we need some practice with the underwater videography) before Nicola's head and bubbles obscure the view. But it wasn't all about the sharks as we also saw some fantastic Sea-horses and the elusive but stunning Mandarin fish. The rest of our time on Malapascua ... read more

Why oh why do air-conditioned buses always turn the air-con onto full? It’s as if they only have two settings: “off” and “right, let’s make 'em freeze”. The direction vent above your head can’t be turned off, and so you are subjected to an icy breeze throughout your journey. I’m usually sitting there wearing a fleece, and I am used to cold weather. The poor locals sit there wearing blankets and wooly hats. Makes no sense. And the larger long-distance companies insist that you turn up an hour before your journey. Why? It’s a bus for gods sake, not a plane. Also, for some reason, when you arrive an hour before the engine is already running. Gasoline here is expensive, about a dollar a litre. Everyone complains about it. So it makes no sense to leave ... read more

First, a caveat - this event took place many years ago. …. It was like I was transferred into the movie called “Fern Gully”. All the plants around me were of all kinds of ferns and that they seemed to fill my whole vision. That moment was so magical that I wished I could take it all in. I found a big rock and sat on it, and with a half smile filling my lips, I scanned the whole area. I felt like I was in the middle of God’s lovely creation. Then they started coming. I saw one on my boots. My chinky eyes widened. Then another suddenly jumped on my wrist! Leeches! Lots of them! That panic-filled moment made me realize that I was in the middle of a leech country. The one on ... read more

May 18: I'm in the office thinking, today it will be a long and tiring day. We will be going to Sorsogon to see the gentle giant of Donsol... the Whale shark. The plans of leaving early did not push through because my cousin and I have important things to do at work. We ended up leaving late in the afternoon. To save time we decided to meet in Lucena city since my cousin will be coming from Pangasinan (they have an exhibit there). We leave Cavite at around 4:00pm, leaving my youngest son, James to my mother in law. I have doubts if I can make it until Goa, our first destination (Goa is 7-8hrs travel from Manila). I made quick stop in Petron gasoline station in south super hi-way to have gasoline and to ... read more
