Laine's been pestering me to contribute to this, but I just havn't been filled with inspiration, especially with Filipinos reading over my shoulder in the internet cafe; they seem to have a very different understanding of privacy on the internet, possibly because few of them have email or personal pages that wouldn't necissarily be open for every passer-by to scope out. Oh well, such is life when moving through another culture - another thing to take with a grain of salt, shrug, and smile. I have found this approach essential when dealing with Filipinos, who (I'm sure Laine has already mentioned) are perhaps the most disorganized and ambiguous people I've ever met. I'm learned very quickly that in the Philippines the saying "everything is relative" becomes the golden rule - there seems to be no objective, ... read more

in my quest to find reef that has not been damaged by dynamite fishing, it has brought me to the romblon islands province. the two islands that i spent time on were tablas and romblon. in both i was greeted with so much kindness. whenever i would sit down, people would come up to me and just start talking. they were interested in why i have come to their town and where i came from. it was always very genuine. on more than one instance i was invited to homes for meals or coffee. the people alone are worth the trek to this island group. on tablas i stayed in the towns on Looc and Santa Fe. in Looc is heard there was an excellent marine sanctuary. to get there i talked to the local tourist ... read more

Ahhh. Finally internet that works well, expensive but it’s all right with me. Where do I start… I left Puerto Galera heading to Romblon, a place that wasn’t even in my lonely planet book(a friend recommended) so I had no information on how to get there and ended up traveling all through the night. I enjoyed it though because they sardine you into these Jeepneys and in the day she’s scorching, but nice and cool at night. I have realized now that you really don’t need to do any planning, just tell anyone where you want to go and they send you to the next step of getting there. Travel here takes quite a long time to go a short distance with a combination of Ferries, pump boats, Jeepneys, and tricycles all working together to get ... read more

So just when you think the party is over. I ended up at a bonfire on the beach for my last night in Romblon, with a bunch of locals. I found out that the DRIVER is not the guy that drives the motorcycle or tricycle, but the guy in charge of the bottle. He pours the shots and then passes them around one at a time. Tonight it was Matador Rum. Good times. Ok really this is just an excuse to send you links to the pictures from Romblon. Click here for the pics Wow what a superbowl. Congrats D. I think Randle El should have been MVP though. Just my opinion.... read more

If you buy enough penny bubble gum you can spend a dollar. I know that sounds really stupid but that is essentially what my week or so in Romblon Province has been. Lots and lots of penny bubble gum. When I first arrived in Romblon town, I figured the best story I was going to have been about getting here. After being around here for a week though, I have a different story. Romblon is the marble capital of the Philippines. Everywhere is marble. In the cheapest of guest houses you will find marble tiles and marble tables. I spent one day touring the marble craft shops, watching people carve and shape the marble. Saturdays are spent watching a local soccer meet which is locals vs. foreigners. Strangely Romblon for being a very out of the ... read more
