When my friend told me that we're choosing Dumaguete as our destination for our three-day trip I was a little skiptical about it, thinking that the place is quite unfamiliar and a little unpopular among tourists yet. But after a few discussion and deliberation we all agreed, (what?... one vote against three?, okay, you won!). Since my friend (Iya) was kinda little excited and willing to settle everything and do the "researching" thing, we just paid for the ticket, and leave it all to her. We stayed in a Hotel ( what was the name again? ops I forgot!) one room two queen size beds. The hotel was quite okay, although we were just a little disappointed about the "internet connection" because it said to be included but it wasn't working. Since 'twas already lunch time ... read more

After leaving Palawan, we headed for the beautiful Visayas. The many islands were too numerous to conquer in one trip, so maybe I will have to go back at some point to get to the others, but the four islands I made it to were wonderful. Cebu I only spent one night in Cebu city. I used it (as I assume most people do) as a hub to get around the rest of Visayas. Cebu City was a pretty large city from what I saw. They had a lot of good shopping and a bunch of good food. (I had some wonderful chorizo there!) Lots of friendly places to stay, which is good, since that's about all I did there. Negros I spent most of my time in the Visayas between Negros and Negros Occidental. Landing ... read more

We came to the Philippines with a hot tip to see whale sharks off the tourist track. We were so excited. Then it started to rain, I got chatted up by a subtle prostitute, it rained some more, and then we looked at a weather forecast. Typhoon? Nothing will stop the weathered travellers! Except a typhoon. Especially one which will cover the whole of the Philippines for the duration of our visas. God damnit. Well, hours after booking flights out of here in two weeks time, we decided that there was just no point in being here at all. Everything is wet, every journey is a massive ordeal involving gut wrenching ferry rides, and the whole damn place can just GET OUT OF MY FACE. It's such a shame. We both love the Philippine people and ... read more

I was sad to leave Boracay. It has probably been the best beach I have ever been to. However, we had a flight to catch. Next stop, Thelma's home town of Valencia on the island of Negros. We caught a small prop job airplane from Boracay to Cebu. This must have been the smallest commercial aircraft I have ever been on. I think there were maybe 15 passengers on board. There was sort of a partition between the passengers and the cockpit, but I could still see the left arm of the pilot as he guided us through the skies. The plane did not even have a toilet. The flight was less than an hour and we were in Cebu city before I knew it. Cebu city is the second biggest city in the Philippines. It ... read more

A trip to Asia wouldn't be complete without at least one cock fight. I almost saw one in Indonesia, but the legality of it there seemed to be a bit of a grey area. The predominitly Muslim country isn't opposed to the cock fighting per se, but rather the gambling that accompanies it. Bali, which is mostly Hindu, seems to be more accomodating, but I'm still not sure if it is legal there. At any rate, cock fighting is more underground in Indonesia, but it is legal and very popular in the Philippines. After we had arrived in Thelma's village, I began asking around about when and where a local fight could be found. Sunday is the big day for cockfighting, just like football is around the world. The fights take place in a small stadium-like ... read more

I had gotten used to hearing all sorts of things outside of Thelma's house during the night. There seems to be a constant howling from dogs, and the expected rooster wake-up call; even the occasional falling coconut. On one Sunday morning though, I was woken at 4:30 am to a horific squeeling noise which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up. I went outside and crept down the twenty stairs behind the house to the back of the property where I found the prisoner lying on the ground. She was hog tied, literally, and looking pretty scared. Her skin had dark circular patches on it, which might have been burn marks. I could not be certain if it was as sign of torture or not. Unfortunately for the prisoner, she had ... read more

Seeings though our last but one blog captured your imaginations...well the title did anyway based on it zooming to the top of our blog hits, we thought we would continue the sex theme in the title, not that this blog has anything to do with sex! We'd also like to say that this blog is a bit of a rant of a blog about a place which really disappointed us! Our flight from Palawan to Cebu went without incident, that is except for a large group of Filipinos (the front half of the plane) who had possibly never flown before and who did not observe any of the safety rules. At the exact time the plane was about to hit the tarmac on landing, 2 of them decided to get up and remove their bags from ... read more

I have recieved a pretty apt comment that I should chill and take it easy for a few days well I am doing that here in Boracay but I hate to sit still for too long as travel here is extremely time intensive and my time is running out. Three weeks is nowhere near enough to get to just the major sights. Yesterday I caught a trike at 7am to the Jeepney pick up point then a few hours later a mini bus then after another 2 or 3 hours I arrived Roxas Port to be told the ferry had just left. Then a security guard told me to run and I might make the boat which I did, (this saved me an 8 hour wait), I then got off the boat in Caticlan. For ... read more

Untitled Our flight from Changi airport’s budget terminal was uneventful- we were lucky and our flight left on time at 12:20am. We arrived at Cebu and headed straight for the ferry wharf. We got a 6am Oceanjet ferry to Dumaguete, via Tagbilaran. From Dumagete we had a transfer arranged , after 12 hours on the road with little sleep, stinking hot and sweaty (and with lots of other people insisting THEY were picking us up) we were so grateful to see a man waving a sign with our names on it. He pointed us towards our “taxi” and for a second neither of us could see the air con vehicle we had imagined. WRONG.. some backpackers we are anyhow. We had a small jeepney style truck, with us riding in the back on bench seats with ... read more
