Samstag, 24.
So much to do in Dumaguete
Published: October 17th 2011Asia » Philippines » Negros » Dumaguete » BaniladI stayed at Harolds Pension which is probably the best place I've stayed at in the Philippines and the cheapest after initially only going to say for three nights I changed my mind to five as there is loads to do here, including awesome diving at Apo Island and the worlds best muck diving. The first afternoon I had a walk around the town and the waterfront. Then the hostel was having a BBQ night so at 6pm they took us to the market to buy whatever we wanted I had some fresh tuna with egg plant and pumpkin. Then they seasoned it for us and cooked it, I ate too much but it was delicious. I met everyone else staying at the hostel and we spent the evening sat on the roof top restaurant ... read more
Is there anywhere, apart from a traffic jam-bound second-hand BMW, where a person of some cultural and musical nouse can legitimately enjoy Elefunk amongst friends? Dick went to Bayawan to rescue Bob Marley, his dealer, who had run of funds and was trapped there with the weed. Bob met Dick at the bus station. Dick bought some chicken and some beers and they trailed down alleyways between plywood houses to Bob's friend's place by its babbling sewer. Dick knew these situations well from Brazil and immediately dispatched a semi-toothless friend of Bob for a couple of big bottles of Red Horse and got out his papers and pipe. Papers, real papers with glue, are an exotic and much prized luxury in the Philippines. Dick had about half a packet of Rizla Slim Blue Kingsize. They elicited ... read more
When my friend told me that we're choosing Dumaguete as our destination for our three-day trip I was a little skiptical about it, thinking that the place is quite unfamiliar and a little unpopular among tourists yet. But after a few discussion and deliberation we all agreed, (what?... one vote against three?, okay, you won!). Since my friend (Iya) was kinda little excited and willing to settle everything and do the "researching" thing, we just paid for the ticket, and leave it all to her. We stayed in a Hotel ( what was the name again? ops I forgot!) one room two queen size beds. The hotel was quite okay, although we were just a little disappointed about the "internet connection" because it said to be included but it wasn't working. Since 'twas already lunch time ... read more

Had a few spare days so decided to go and see Twin Lakes and Casaroro Falls. Trip up to Twin Lakes was longer than I expected and a bit of a rough road but worth the effort. Only me there!! Casaroro Falls was easy, to Valencia then follow the road up to Falls, again only me there! Very relaxing escape from Dumaguete!!!... read more
After leaving Palawan, we headed for the beautiful Visayas. The many islands were too numerous to conquer in one trip, so maybe I will have to go back at some point to get to the others, but the four islands I made it to were wonderful. Cebu I only spent one night in Cebu city. I used it (as I assume most people do) as a hub to get around the rest of Visayas. Cebu City was a pretty large city from what I saw. They had a lot of good shopping and a bunch of good food. (I had some wonderful chorizo there!) Lots of friendly places to stay, which is good, since that's about all I did there. Negros I spent most of my time in the Visayas between Negros and Negros Occidental. Landing ... read more
OK Philippines, you win, we don't want trouble. We're leaving. Be cool.
Published: January 5th 2009Asia » Philippines » Negros » DumagueteWe came to the Philippines with a hot tip to see whale sharks off the tourist track. We were so excited. Then it started to rain, I got chatted up by a subtle prostitute, it rained some more, and then we looked at a weather forecast. Typhoon? Nothing will stop the weathered travellers! Except a typhoon. Especially one which will cover the whole of the Philippines for the duration of our visas. God damnit. Well, hours after booking flights out of here in two weeks time, we decided that there was just no point in being here at all. Everything is wet, every journey is a massive ordeal involving gut wrenching ferry rides, and the whole damn place can just GET OUT OF MY FACE. It's such a shame. We both love the Philippine people and ... read more
