Northern Mongolia - Maybe, I Don't Know :-)
Published: August 29th 2009Asia » Mongolia » Khovsgale LakeTime for our next trip organised through the UB Guesthouse, 426,000T each, this included food, travel, accommodation and the wonderful Jack and the added bonus of his 13 year old boy aka Mini Jack. We set off early back up the road we had only just come back on to Karakorum, as we were just there the other day we did nothing and waited with anticipation for the next drive to our next stop Tsetserleg. It wasn't a great drive, Jack told us the scenery didn't get interesting for a few days so we spent our time getting to know our fellow passengers Sandi and Vanessa, they're both American but born elsewhere, Vanessa, Hong Kong and Sandi, Thailand. We got to Tserserleg early so we headed to the Museum of Arkhangai Aimag. It is housed in ... read more
HOW WE GOT QUARANTINED BY THE PESKY BUBONIC PLAGUE
Published: October 4th 2007Asia » Mongolia » Khovsgale LakeFrom bush camp at a family farm near Lake Zuun took us actually 3 hours or so to figure out how to cross the river safely, soon as we are through a big rock got lodged between the wheels again and have to pry it out, after that another long drive. So far we've been travelling in Mongolia on dirt roads, jeep tracks that would suddenly dissapear sometimes so the GPS gives us a lot of help, very rough travel and depending on road conditions and weather we could be driving all day and yet only gone 50 km. This is one of them long drives and when we were finally into the Khuvsgul aimag we got stopped at a bridge and from what it looks a check point, turns out not only it is but ... read more
So here we are, the second blog of the second part of our trip.... Following the success of our 'Gobi' trip, we decided to go on another of the tours offered by 'UB Guesthjouse'. This time, we headed out on a 10-day trip, heading west out of Ulaan Baator and turning north to one of the most popular tourist attractions, Khovsgol Lake. This is right on the border between Mongolia and Siberia and so we were pretty excited to be heading there - when we left lake baikal (Siberia) all those months ago we said that we really wanted to see it in spring / summer. We hoped that this trip would let us see the siberian scenery when it isnt -20 outside!! The group stayed pretty much the same as the gobi trip, minus Hannah ... read more
How many camels can we get for Krysta?
Published: September 14th 2006Asia » Mongolia » Khovsgale LakeIt’s August 23rd at 9am, and the six of us travelers are gathered around a big old Russian truck, waiting to leave on our 9-day trek through the countryside of Mongolia. Besides Yafeh and I, we had been joined by Olaf & Sabine from Germany, and Lena & Louise from Denmark. We’re 6 strong, and incredibly ready to hit the road! We meet our driver “Auto” (yeah I’m not lying, or trying to make a Simpson’s joke, his real name was “Auto”), and we set off from the UB guesthouse. Not even out of UB yet, we had to stop at the supermarket to ‘load up’ on supplies for the trip. We’d been warned that there wouldn’t be any sort of fresh vegetables or fruit along the way, so we loaded up on groceries and cooking ... read more
