Surprisingly we managed to wake up before 0930. Had a cuppa and few biscuits. Then it's off to the meeting point @ the beach for our island hopping/snorkelling trip. Advice : best to get your own snorkelling set if you are doing it often. $$ saved plus cleaner. We were a little irritated as Hassan - the guide promised us a private boat. It turned out we had to share with 2 English but luckily they turn out to be nice chaps. First stop we did some snorkelling @ some rocky place. Kinda scary as the weather was a little overcast. The sea was a little rough but we managed to see quite some fishes. But I had some problems when I got too near to a rock scratching my left arm but did not bleed ... read more

0300 My alarm rang and I shot up immediately! Yay! Our first island trip is beginning. I didnt disturb Tassa as she drove us back from PJ and reached Mcca @ around 2100 yesterday. Since I'll be occupying the bathroom, I decided to be kind and let her snooze for a wee while. 0330 Gapi called, grumbling when I said we were still getting ready. Decided to call the rest. AAaa! Shane and Tina were still asleep! Gave them a good wake up call. 0400 Yay! All packed and ready! Journey began towards Mersing. Mersing is the jetty that we will depart for Pulau Tioman. Highway visibility was bad as there were bush fires along it. We had to stop at a rest-stop to clean the windshield. (& to pee). And forced Gapi to sit at ... read more

We left Langkawi at 7am - we were glad to leave our hotel! Luckily we got on the 7:30 ferry back to the mainland and got to Ipoh early afternoon. Our plan here was to go to Cameron Highlands as Lonely planet told us this is the main travel hub for visitors to the area. It would appear that in the last six years things have changed and people now go directly to Cameron Highlands which means Ipoh is a bit of a ghost town.......we were the only white people there! Our hotel was find though, the staff wanted to be helpful but couldn't really help us as the only English he seemed to know was 'bus' and 'taxi'. The next day we went to Cameron Highlands on a VIP bus - traveling in style! The ... read more

The Sibu group of island consists of Sibu Besar, Sibu Tengah, Sibu Hujung and Sibu Kukus (Coral Island). Sibu Island Resort is located at Sibu Tengah island, east coast of Johor, Malaysia, 20 acres in size and surrounded by white sandy beach. We took a public bus from Singapore to Johor Bahru, and then another public bus to Kota Tinggi. From Kota Tinggi, we took a taxi to Tanjung Leman's jetty, which is about 45 minutes from Kota Tinggi. It was the first time Yiren tried Kayaking. The water was crystal clear. We also had much fun digging clams ("la la") at the beach. ... read more

At the moment we are in Kota Bahru at the top of the eastern side of Malaysia. Tomorrow we cross the border into Thailand but at this stage am unsure as to whether we stay in the region for a few days or just keep heading north to Bangkok. We can’t get any information on the train timetables until we actually arrive in Thailand. We’ve booked a taxi to drive us the one hour north and drop us off at the border immigration office, where we then have to walk the kilometre between the two border posts and onward to the train station. We loved our time in Kuala Terengganu - the city had a strong Islamic influence and we seemed to be the only tourists there. We spent 2 days and nights there - we ... read more

We’ve just enjoyed three days in Kuantan on the east coast and facing the South China Sea. The bus drive from Jerentut was pretty boring and the drivers had their 30 minute meal break after 2 hours of travel which always make the bus arrive half an hour later than scheduled. The buses are scary to travel in as the drivers do - at least to how way of thinking - the most dangerous things. That day they sat on the tail of trucks piled high with logs - the windscreen was nearly touching them and the driver kept trying to pass the trucks but the road was often too narrow or there was traffic coming towards them. Quite a few times they passed as we were approaching blind corners. It was made worse by the ... read more

I’m writing this in a little café in Jerentut in Central Malaysia, whilst waiting for a bus to take us to Kuantan on the east coast of the country. We arrived in Jerentut after five hours on the Jungle Railway from KL. We travelled 2nd class - it was clean, comfortable and a/c. The train was very busy as it is now school holidays here. Jerentut is a quiet little village, though we discovered the main part of the town (much bigger) when we climbed up the hill behind us. We are actually in the old part - the newer part is higher and set amongst trees so hard to see from here. We spent the night in a small hotel, paying only $16 for the room. After wandering around the village we located a laundry ... read more

Kuala Lumpar is crazy, crazy, crazy - sheer utter chaos!!! And we both love it! The entire city is bursting with life and people of all cultures. The bus trip from Melaka took 3 hours, one hour longer then we expected mainly due to traffic congestion in KL itself. We actually had to join a queue in the street leading to the bus station and then another queue just to enter the station. Once inside we felt like we had arrived in hell… The buses all park underground - it was a real test of driving skills just to position the bus into it’s parking spot. To leave the bus parking area you had to drag your suitcase along narrow pathways between the rows of stationary buses until you reached a narrow footpath leading you up ... read more
