After the peace and quiet again of Cherating, I wasn't really holding out for much fun at the perhentian islands, perhaps 4 nights then moving on to Thailand. As with everything when you travelling along, there's always a suprise around the corner!! Got the ferry across to Kecil which is the smaller of the islands and met Kam and Laura, Kam is from Great Barr, went to the same college as me at the same time and I swear I've spoke to him before in the past!!! Laura lives in Leeds although she's a united season ticket holder in the stretford End upper, so I'm not gonna mess with her!! So we now have a crew, the food and bars on the island are quality and I've ended up staying 8 nights!! Its so chilled out ... read more

In this part of the world your right hand is used for almost everything: you shake hands with your right hand, you eat with the fingers of your right hand, you use your right hand to exchange money or goods. 'So why do you even have a left hand?' you may ask. Well, my friends, your left hand has only one job. And it is a shitty one. The left hand is used, in cooperation with a hose, to wipe your arse. There is no toilet tissue between you and your ass, not even a measly one ply square. It's just you and a little trickle of water from a hose conveniently located to the left of the porcelain hole. But beware- don’t wipe with the hand that feeds you. I haven't 'gone native' yet. I ... read more

As is usual on our first day in a new place, we picked up a map of the local area and went exploring. Today, however, we didn't get very far - but in a good way. First of all though, we ventured off in search of new accomodation as we think we might want to stay longer in Kuala Lumpur. Our Pujangga Homestay is small and noise carries inside and outside. There's no hot water which makes taking a shower a bone chilling experience. For a few days it's ok but not if we stay longer. We scout out a few places nearby and decide on the Trekker Lodge which has huge rooms with ensuite for not much more money plus the atmosphere seems a bit more fun. We made our reservation and continued with our ... read more

Malaysia, Truly Asia Our JB trip started late today. After meeting my friends (Yq and March) in Chinatown at 6pm, we proceed to drive up the causeway to cross the Malaysian border. March was doing this religiously every weekend, rain or shine because he could save 50% off his expensive petrol bills at his favourite Shell Station at JB's Taman Sri Tebrau. Like a typical weekend, the causeway was packed with vehicles - Malaysians rushing back home after a day's work and Singaporeans for their weekend seafood therapy. I do not know if the escalating crime rates in JB have deterred Singaporeans from visiting. All I know is that we were stuck at the Woodlands customs for a good 40 minutes before reaching the Malaysian border. It was about 7.45pm when we checked in the url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g298278-d302264-r5796526-The_Puteri_Pacific_Hotel_Johor_Bahru- ... read more

- right into an overhead post. I was pretty dizzy for the next few seconds and a little confused. Jen got me to sit down and when some poor old Malay guy came to see what had happened I started shouting at him: "Yes? Do you see anything interesting?". She sprayed so much disinfectant on my scalp that it was running down my face and into my mouth (disinfectant tastes bad). I was talking fast - very fast, asking Jen questions and then answering them myself. Probably the adrenaline. I found a bit of blood trickling through my hairline and decided I'd better head to the local hospital - I'd heard Malaysian healthcare was supposed to be pretty good. One taxi ride later, we found ourselves wandering around trying to find A&E realising we had ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Kelantan » Kota Bharu September 24th 2006

So in almost exactly one day we have seen everything there is to see in Kota Bharu. We went to the cultural musuem (I don't know how to spell that and I can't find a word processor on this computer- sorry) and shopping center, ate at the local eatery, found the waffle place, went to the Thai consultate, and two tourist offices looking for things to do. They sugested Kite and Puppet Making Classes. Seriously. (It's okay- I laughed too, but I really think that is what this town does in their free time). There is no bar, no movie theater, no beach, everything closes at sundown. And I'm scared of puppets. I don't want to make one. Kites I'm okay with (generaly) but there is no wind here and it's too hot to run around ... read more

Our flight to Kuala Lumpur wasn't until 4pm so we checked out of the Kata Villa at noon and had a private air-con taxi take us to the airport for 650 Baht. It was an extra cost but the local buses are so slow that it would have taken at least 3-4 hours to get to the airport rather than just under an hour going direct. We hung out in Burger King at the airport until it was time to check in. The get-up with Air Asia is very much like flying with Easyjet - there's a lot of pushing and shoving when you get on the plane as it's a 'pick your own seat' scenario. There's also no meals or drinks included; you have to buy these from the cabin crew. The flight was only ... read more

Hello, hope your all well. We are in Kuala Terengganu at the moment which is one of only three places in Malaysia with a Malay majority so it's all very cultural and well Malay. But most interesting news first...we had our first trip to A & E yesterday. Sam managed to walk into a bit of low metal roof and hit his head pretty badly. He was talking complete jibberish and shouting a lot so I inspected his head and found it was bleading. He was still talking jibberish so I got a taxi and we went to the local hopsital. By the time we got there he had calmed down rather. We had to pay RM50 (about 8 pounds) becuase were not malaysian. Sam saw a Dr then got a stitch in his head. When ... read more

Well folks, we've finally arrived in Langkawi !! After 2 years of planning, we made it to The Tajung Sanctuary on time and in one piece. As any of you who have endured our stories of our previous travel escapdes, you will appreciate that this is something of a miracle in itself !! Flights were on time, and so were we. Luggage made it with us. Reservations were all ok. Not really sure we can believe it ourselves, but it's a nice start all the same !! We got to Tanjung Sanctuary on Monday night about half six, chuffed with ourselves that we had 'beaten' the jet-lag, got the bags into the room (huuuuuuge by the way !!) and sat and had a nice relaxing cigarette (sorry parents) on the balcony looking onto our lovely wee ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands September 23rd 2006

Gosh we have done LOADs of cool stuff since the last blog, when we left KL we got a bus (an economy, not an 'executive', the difference? four seats in a row instead of the luxury of only three.. no we are not sure either) to the Cameron Highlands. The highlands are the home of Malaysia's tea industry and it is so high up that it gets (shock) cold at night and rains every afternoon. we rocked up to a place called Father's Guest House (so called because it is on the site of a religious mission) where the rooms and dorms are in old Nissen (?) huts. We quickly met a new buddy called Patrick, a French Canadian maths teacher, and Chris an Australian /Malaysian on his holidays before heading up to Thailand. With our ... read more
