I traveled from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station aboard a large coach bus, and am glad I did. The greenery and landscape along the way more than made up for the six hour bus ride. Since my bus disembarked at the main transportation hub, finding my way to the subway service that I needed took very little effort. Finding and checking into Suzie’s Guesthouse where I spent four nights was also easy. Suzie’s is a safe, comfortable, no frills sort of place with a very friendly staff. To me Kuala Lumpur is the sort of place where it takes a while to know what you are dealing with, or whether or not you will like it. When I first arrived I thought the city had certain hardness about it. People seemed serious, maybe even indifferent ... read more

Doing Christmas like we’re a UNICEF greeting card Where should an Anglophone Swiss-American protestant lady, married to a French Jewish man, with a self-declared Buddhist daughter and a Santa-fearing son spend Christmas? Across the street from a Hindu temple, among a predominantly Taoist population, in a Muslim country seems as good a place as any. And so through the Hare Krishnas we weaved our way over to George Town’s China House restaurant, where we enjoyed a traditional turkey roast, complete with heavenly mashed potatoes and fresh cranberry sauce! Just before heading out, the kids opened their collection of “easily packable” Christmas gifts: miniature Spiderman and Batman figurines for Sam and similarly sized mini Cinderella and Ariel dolls for Mimi. They also each received matching toy cameras, which were a surprisingly big success. And sure enough... read more

I appologize for the start of this but I'm feeling a bit philisophical. What is important to people can define how they live their lives. It is easy to say people value money. From what I have observed, people only value money as a means to an end. Furthermore, those who value money for itself, rarely get any. At home the US Government has, since the beginning, provided its people with an ideal about what is important. A good American seeks the "American Dream," a nice cared for home, no need to want for food and clothes, a good job and a safe place to raise a family. Since the inception of this dream things have shifted to allow for other wants, but the underlying needs have remained. In Malaysia, I have yet to see any ... read more

Ok so for those of you who haven't seen Entrapment (incl. James) the Petronas Towers are the world's largest twin structure - an ajoining bridge allows you to see the KL skyline. We'd heard you had to get there early to get a ticket so we made our way across for 9am. Unfortunately they had already sold out of tickets but we remembered that a friend had said you could get a great view of the towers themselves from the Traders Hotel sky bar. Plan B = return to bar in the evening for a night-view of the towers. We decided to have a wander through 'Little India' to see the silk and sari shops and also grabbed a curry and lentil daahl lunch here too. We spent the afternoon ... read more

Given the lack of partying last night the 6.30am start wasn't too bad and we had a pleasant flight from Krabi to Kuala Lumpur (KL). In anticipation of a Bangkok-like city, we'd booked a slightly nicer hotel with a gym and a pool so that we could relax after a day in the city. However we are pleased to say that KL is a much cleaner and less 'sweaty' city than Bangkok. To make up for the hotel cost - we've challenged ourselves to only eat 'local' street food (a vast variety of Malay, Chinese and Indian is on offer) for lunch and dinner. Today we ate dinner in Chinatown and then headed across to the central market to see a cultural dance performance. The hotel has ESPN ... so ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I will be celebrating New Year exactly 8hrs ahead of the UK. Therefore I think 2 celebrations are in order. 1 for Malaysia and one for UK. This evening myself and Maher are heading to KLCC or best known at the Petronas Twin Towers to most. There is a firework display in the gardens there. Given that it is the largest attraction in KL, I am anticipating a very large crowd. 2012 has been a really good year. I left the UK back in the summer and set out on a adventure, and what an adventure it has been. There have been highs and lows. Places I have fallen in love with and places I found hard to travel through due to the sheer poverty of the place (Cambodia being the main country ... read more

Opening scene: Poorly prepared backpackers caught in an unexpected downpour walking along a road in Singapore, Singapore looking for their hostel. Just as they were reaching the shelter of a bus stop-BOOM- a bus wizzes by and sends a wave of street water crashing over me.. oh I mean her… nope. This is how my holiday with my mom started! And with good cheer we trudged on through the rain because we were already wet from the bus wave. Pura Vida. Luckily this was the only time we ran into rain on our 2 and a half week journey. The blaring contrast of Singapore to Hanoi (where I’ve spent the last 6 months living) was incredible and surreal that I was actually here. By far one of the most incredible cities I’ve had the pleasure ... read more

As I am sure the computers and networks will be busy over the Christmas and New Year period I thought I would take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. To all my family and friends; you will be in my thoughts over the holidays and forever in my heart. I will be spending my holidays here in KL. It's Christmas Eve here now and after an evening in Bukit Bintang seeing all the decorations and all, I'm feeling in the Christmas spirit. Love to all xxx... read more
