As I wrote this as I was on the plane on the way to Oz. Rewind a week and I’ll recap. I finished my last blog by saying Emma, Katie and I had arrived in Phuket, we were waiting for our room to be ready and the girls were chilling in the pool. I left the girls to chill out and went for a walk down the beach to get my baring’s. Patong was exactly how I remembered it from when me and Kyle went in 2010. It was busy, full of hustle and bustle of shops and locals trying to sell you the earth “DVD Mate”….. But on the other side of the road was the beautiful beach and relatively clear sea. It was so hot, 36 degrees and not any breeze. After I was ... read more

Sunday morning, we woke, had breakfast, then took the KL monorail to the bustling Petaling Street, which is part of Chinatown. Malaysia is a melting pot, where the three main cultures, the Malays, Chinese and Indians, all live together. It is therefore quite diverse in it's culture, architecture and cuisine. Chinatown, particularly Petaling street, is a fantastic place to go to grab some bargains and sample some great Chinese food. Ian was looking for some shorts, no luck this time however. Right around the corner was the amazing Sri Mahamariamman Temple, the richest and oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia. At it's entrance, it has an impressive 5-tiered tower, or Gopuram, which is surrounded by over 200 statues of various different Hindu gods. We had to take our shoes off to enter. The ceiling of the main ... read more

So, after 10 months of planning, Ian and I are finally here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! The journey to KL was long but thankfully uneventful. We headed from Macclesfield to London, where we spent the night at my parents place. The following morning, not wanting to rush, we left in plenty of time for Gatwick airport, where we dropped off our bags, grabbed some lunch and boarded the flight to Istanbul for the first leg of our journey. Must say, I am really impressed with Turkish Airlines. Comfy seats, each of them has a screen on the back, which you can use to watch a variety of different TV shows and films, listen to music, play games and much more. The food on board was very good too, Turkish chicken, kofte kebabs, rice, olives, goats cheese, ... read more

Our morning transfer from Singapore to Malaysia got off to an unexpected and slightly disconcerting start. The coach station wasn’t in the most salubrious part of town and the dust and diesel fumes mixed with the searing heat to create a choking, clawing combination. We were quietly waiting with our bags for the bus to arrive, casually observing a tiny, frail old Chinese lady. She looked like she may well have been born in the 1800’s and was crouched over a money box collecting a few cents from people wanting to use the rather decrepit washrooms. All of a sudden and in garbled Mandarin, she started to rant and rave in my direction - it was obvious she’d taken a real dislike to me (not surprising in itself I know but it normally takes people a ... read more

Up at 6 for a buffet breakfast. Quite excited at the prospect of choice, and gamely embarked on dhal and noodles. Yuk! Couldn't even look at the porridge with its enticing garnishes of what to Sam looked like toenails (fried onions) and crunchy little fish. Then walked past the brothels (still open but business looked a little slow at 7am) and up to the main concourse of Sentral Station. That is not a spelling mistake! We found the queue for the LRT line ticket machines and they were easypeasy. Touch screen in English and nearly completely idiot-proof. Someone stepped forward to help with one bit, and there was no impatience from people behind. Once on the platform there were lots of lines, not an almighty crush, very orderly - see photo. Inside it was Baltic from ... read more

We diddled around for a while before our lift to the airport (negotiated with a driver at the entrance to the hotel, as the hotel didn't seem to have a record of our booking, and saved over £1 - happy days!), had our nails done and bought our standard travel snacks (cheesy ritz crackers) with the last of our rupiah. Then went back to the air-conditioned splendour of our room. The staff obviously wanted to clean but we stuck it out! We were very pleased to have got down to our last 50,000 rupiah. Oh dear - big mistake! TRAVEL INFORMATION - there is a departure tax of 150,000 - in my far-reaching travel research I missed this vital fact. We found out once we'd been through security and spotted a pay desk. Sam wondered if ... read more

18th February – two weeks since I left the UK. The past 2 weeks have really flown, and what a great start to my adventure, now on to the next one! Arrived safely in KL, slept on both planes but still felt tired. Had to try and stay awake… lost 6 hours and am now 8 hours ahead of the UK so timing whatapps and skypes is going to be more of a headache. When I walked out of the airport – around 8am I had to take my jumper off as it was hot, the taxi driver was very helpful telling me places to go and even teaching me some Malay, numbers and phrases. The hotel is basic and above the 33 restaurant, am I am staying in the 33 star hotel. The room is ... read more

When you are full of free time, you stretch your time to decide minor things like should you take a day or night train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur (KL)? How does it matter? Anyhow, after much deliberation and a long list of pros and cons, I finally decided that the morning train suited me so that I can feed breakfast to my fishes and look at the scenery. Next morning, I took Singapore MRT (Mass Rapid Transmit), to reach Marsiling station. Then bus 856 to Woodlands train station. After formalities, I sat in second class chair cart. The train left the city and I saw greenery and more greenery. There was hardly a soul around, no villages, ponds - nothing.I went off to sleep. It just happened that the cost of the day ticket was ... read more

KL sightseeing day (and more shopping malls!). Did the tourists open top bus tour round town as only day the Petronas Towers are closed. View from KL Tower was impressive though. Harrods are opening a 7 star hotel so we thought we would stop by their café for a happy hour cocktail – very civilised! Enjoyable day finished off with a trip to the night market (more fake goods!) and a fab hot stock meal in the street where we cooked our own meat, veg and fish on skewers with drinks all for £20.... read more
