New favourite city! And if any of you come here you simply must stay at Singgahsana Lodge!(www.singgahsana.com) Delicious showers, real coffee at breakfast, pillows which envelop your face...all the things you crave when on the road! The weather was decidedly wet and grey, so I leapt at the opportunity to check out the renowned museum. Unfortunately photos were not allowed, because the archaic collection of taxidermied animals truly had to be seen to be believed! Either a small child stuffed these poor critters, or they were done some time at the beginning of the last century and have been slowly getting lumpier ever since. Expressions the Muppets would have aspired to looked back at me through the glass. ... read more

If anyone from the group wants to email me a good photo of the longhouse for this bit it would be great as my camera died. Thur 25th Up and into 2 minibusses to drive most of the day to the river to get in even even thinner longboats. We stopped at a fruit market on the way and bought some weird and wonderful fruits and had a penut and butter pancake which were lovely. The river was fail flooded when we got there and we seemed to be sitting very close to the river. But we arrived uncapsised to a very tradition Iban long house. It is like 13 terrace houses all with one long wide corridor outside where they sit and weave and socialise with eachother. But all made of wood and half of ... read more

We had a fantastic trip today after an early (well 7.30) breakfast we were picked up from the hotel by our mini bus and driven for about 30 minutes to the Baku National park entrance. We put on our life jackets and got onto a small boat which took us on a 30 minute ride down a broad river estuary into the South China Sea and across to a lovely island where we trekked through the jungle (about a 3 mile return trip) in very hot steamy conditions and some quite steep paths to a lovely beach. We saw some notable wildlife including wild Proboscis Monkeys. We walked through some refreshing rain on the way back and had some local dishes and lots of water (to replace all that we had sweated off) for lunch. The ... read more

Richard and John managed to enjoy 9 holes of golf before we left for the airport yesterday; Dot and Jo walked the dog and enjoyed some refreshing rain. The sun was shining on the golf course! The one hour flight was good and the transport (mini bus) which Richard & Jo had arranged was waiting to take us the short ride to our hotel by the riverside in the city. We have lovely rooms on the 7th floor with beautiful views over the city and the river. We walked around the little streets and the market area and soaked up some of the atmosphere. We won’t bore you with the description of our meal (which of course was delicious) but we ate outside overlooking the river at a very nice local restaurant. We are about ... read more

I was trying to create a group address on web mail and that is why you may have received a blank message a few hours ago. Well last night we did go to a really nice authentic Japanese restaurant where we sat in our own little room, with sliding doors and a small foot well for our feet in (we sat on cushions with no shoes on); it was very comfortable for all. I will attach just a couple of snaps; we still have no response from the blog site and if they don’t sharpen up I will send some more via Picasa when we get back from Kuching (we go there tomorrow-Thursday afternoon and come back Sunday evening). The food and service was excellent. Sophie has real talent for designing clothes and I will send ... read more

Tue 23rd We go to the airport (one undercover walkway waiting room) to find our flight has been delayed till the afternoon so we sat waiting for it and playing cards. Then as the plane came to land it started raining so it turned around and couldn't land. It was stil planed to try again but in the end they canceled it. The airline put us up in a 5* resort which the resort only atually classed as 3* but was nicer than what we were use to. unfortunatly it was 4pm and the day had gone. We swam in the pool and then had a nice dinner with some cheesy traditional entertainment. Wed 24th We try again to fly. This time everythin is fine but I am feeling like death- my head t heavy for ... read more

Kuching Kris: We flew from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah on one side of Borneo (Sabah) to Kuching on the other (Sarawak) for a brief outing to sample a bit of Sarawak life. Although it's still Malaysia, Sarawak's effectively another country, on the other side of Brunei. Sarawak has a strange colonial history too. Basically a rich English bloke called James Brooke went adventuring one day in south east Asia (bit like me and Kate, right?). He met the Sultan of Brunei who persuaded him to help quash an uprising in Sarawak. In return he ended up being in charge of the place (the story is probably more complicated but I don't want anyone getting to bored). He became known as the White Rajah and ruled Sarawak as his own private kingdom. Cool eh? Most people just ... read more

Ok, THIS is the shortest email blast yet!! I haven't even thought of what I want to say, but first off wanted to say I am truely sorry for not writing sooner (except of course to reply individually to you all wonderful, caring individuals...). I will be away from internet access for about 4 days, and with the amazing amount of response and inquiries I have received, I figured I should let everyone know NOW I am heading to the Philippines in early January to aid with the relief efforts after two destructive typhoons have hit the area within the last couple of weeks. The same organization I was with in Thailand after the tsuanmi as well as after Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf States is in the Philippines as we speak. They are working out ... read more

Just to let everyone know I am alive and doing well, despite the Typhoon Durian being one country away. It hit hard in the Philippines just last week (with subsequent mudslides burying entire villages!), hit in southern Vietnam a few days ago, and from what I hear on the news, is heading towards the Gulf of Thailand. I am in the middle of monsoon season here on Borneo, East Malaysia. There are rains every day, but no signs of any danger. That's it on the blast. Sorry. Stilll behind on "blast news" from three weeks ago. I should be finished with the latest installment soon. Happy Holidays to all and Season's Greetings from Sarawak, Borneo! I hope this short note finds everyone doing well and looking forward to the upcoming holiday season.... read more

Living in Sarawak is sometimes like having one vacation after another...that's because it being the largest state in Malaysia, not only are there more ethnic groups here (over 27..i believe)...but the fact that all races and ethnic people look forward to celebrating their own festivals especially when the latter are government-gazetted public holidays as well. Well, folks..this year,Malaysian Muslims celebrated Hari Raya ( new year ) even earlier.after the sighting of the new moon on 23rd October after a month of fasting. ( Deepavali fell the previous Saturday and Monday was declared extra public holiday ) As usual, there were many ópen-houses' where friends, visitors and strangers were most welcome to drop in for goodwill wishes, greetings and food (!!!). The first two days passed quietly for me, but on the third day, I visited Hayati ... read more
