Today (ok so I am still catching up so it was several days ago but lets just pretend for now) we had a tour of Sandakan. We were picked up by John, our local contact for a tour of the main attractions of Sandakan and an orientation to the area where we will be living for the next few months. We started at the Crocodile Farm - actually it is meant to be the local idea of conservation because as far as I can gather none actually become handbags if the sign about one living there for 43 years to go by. But having said that it was still a difficult visit as the crocodiles were overcrowded and spent much of there time battling each other for water, sun space or dead slops of fish. ... read more

Current cravings: anything other than chicken testicals australian music.. any... we'd settle for Craig McLaughlans 'Mona'. Does anyone even remember he won a gold logie!!!! Yes i know its hard to believe for anyone who knows me. The man who grew up not only not being 'allergic' to seafood, shellfish, duck, offal, mushrooms, avacado, cantelope, mango, nuts, seeds, dark bread, dried fruit, soggy weetbix and after one too many consecutive days of eating sub par caserole, that too, I ate chicken balls. Kym and our new friend Mellisa took us to some dodgeville market by the water and started picking freaky random things from the street vendors (when i say random, they had fish but im just trying to set the mood) Melissa pointed at these satay skewers and said she was 'told' that they ... read more

We left Sandakan for a journey deep in to the centre of the Jungle, The journey took us four hours in a mini bus but there were only two other travelers so we had a sufficient amount of room to breathe, their names were Patrick and Sophie they were on their 4 month honey moon and were such lovely people, really good fun to be around. We eventually came to the very end of the road we had traveled on for two hours into the jungle, before us we could see a large bungalow on stilts surrounded by forest. A large river flowed by the residence. We really were in the Jungle it was awesome I was so happy excited and terrified of snakes, crocodiles, big spiders, praying mantas, scorpions etc...... I crossed over the ... read more

Sun 14th Jan After I last wrote I went back to get a well needed shower and then met Rachel adn Claire at 5 to go and visit a temple- the others had all gone to a Australian war memorial first. We couldn't get up to the temple as there had been a land slide because of the rain!! Are you suprised! So we went straight to The English Tea House which was where the governor use to live. It was very expensive and food didn't live up to English standards. For Dee's birthday we all went out to Kareokee in the evening. It was one english song followed by one or 2 slow malay love songs. I stayed till 2.30 and at the end when all but 4 people had from our group had gone ... read more

Fri 12th A 8.45 Bus journey to Batu Puteh Village which is on the Kinabatangan river and on the edgeof the jungle. However suprise suprise because of the rain it is to wet and muddy to camp in the jungle so we have 2 nights staying with a local family. First we went of a boat ride up the river and saw lots of long tail monkeys and an Orangutan making its nest for the night which was very cool but very high up in the trees to see clearly. We eat dinner in a large open room by the river owned by Mescot the charity that run the homestays. Chris, Kaz and I are sting in our guide Jims house. It is big and spacious and they have 2 cats that look like Tonga. The ... read more

Mat: After two amazing weeks we finally have time for some communication (we are in Kuta Kinabalu again). Luckily enough we have not had much time to spend in internet cafes, and in fact have been away from any computers for most of the time. This is the first of three blogs to explain what we have been up to in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo: 1) The Kinabatangan river, 2) Diving around the world famous Sipadan Island, and 3) Climbing the 4095m Mount Kinabalu (I am happy to be sitting in front of a computer because my legs are cripped after 2 days of going straight up, then straight down). That said, I have just spent a while loading photos because I think they speak loader than words about the wildlife we saw in the jungle near ... read more

Wotto people how the devil are ya?? Well when a certain Mr Axle W Rose stated "welcome to the jungle we'll have fun and games" he wasnt wrong!! After our amazing time in KL we landed in the east of borneo on the 5th of october. the flight was good and it was great to fly over an island of jungle. to be fair personally the whole thing had not quite kicked in and i wasnt really prepared for what we had in store but it was amazing. we ended up at sandakan airport about lunchtimeish and got a taxi to our operations base 30 mins from the airport. this was the the offices of UNkle Tans Wildlife adventures. it was nice to go from a bustling city to the borneo courtyside and there was a ... read more
