Getting to Penang was a bit of a mission. It was only one boat and yet between the delays, the overcrowding (including bags against emergency exits) and the total failure of the air conditioning it was grim. Nevertheless onwards to the old colonial madness of Penang. Its a strange but interesting place, with Little India, Chinatown and the colonial areas. The place seems frozen in time around fifty years ago, filled with little garages sporting tin 'Shell' signs from yesteryear and dilapidated Bitish buildings everywhere. There are some backpackers and also a few older expat dropouts playing draughts with the locals in the stifling heat. We had lovely food at a Chinese restaurant called Opera on the first night on one of the renovated streets in the centre. You start to get a feel for just ... read more

Wednesday 23rd August Paul - Leaving the Highlands this morning was sad as we were all getting used to the lovely weather. Not that I'm complaining that it's hot all the time here (honestly) it was nice to have a little bit of cool weather for a change. After a couple of Roti's for breakfast we got on the bus that didn't start for an hour... no surprises there. Read for a bit before going to the toilet as the bus still hadn't moved yet and as soon as I got back we were off. The road down the mountains was ridiculously windy so trying to read "Great Expectations" wasn't going to well so I nestled my head on Laura for a couple of hours. We pulled into a place called Ipoh for a brief stop ... read more

Oh my goodness. We are now in Penang, back to the busy city life. Back to internet and phones and hot water showers. But honestly, I would love to be back at our homestay which is where we have been the last two and a half days. It was the most relaxing days of our trip thus far. We arrived in a small town that I am still not sure the name of, but it was the first time I have seen just houses here. Everything else has been tall, enormous apartment buildings. It's kind of crazy to see that so many people could cram into such little space, especially when we arrived at the bus station. The area was full of tropical foliage, green landscape everywhere, tall trees. Really beautiful. And then we got to ... read more

My time in Penang didn't get off to the best of starts. As many of you have already heard, my backpack got nicked from the luggage hold of the bus I took there from Kota Bharu. Thankfully I wasn't on my own: Stacey and Anthony, who I was travelling with were in the same situation. Long story short, we arrived in Georgetown tired, stinky and travelling pretty light! The guesthouse we stayed in (75) was great & the staff pointed us in the direction of some cheap clothes to get us started. I managed to replace what seemed like half the contents of my backpack in 1 shop - "Penang Emporium", which is pretty much a Malaysian equivalent of Edinburgh Bargain Stores: purveyor of goods to many many students! We treated ourselves to dinner in the ... read more

greetings from country number 5 on my south east asia tour. i really like Penang - it's very modern and westernised with skyscrapers and large shopping malls. After over 5 weeks of visiting temples and many other cultural activities i decided to give the colonial buildings and tourist attractions a miss. Instead i had a long lie (never slept past 8am until today and plenty of 5am starts), updated my journal, shopped and sat in starbucks drinking a mocha frapucchino with my book. was lovely just to chill out. tonight we had a lovely dinner (nuala had a very funny dish called "Fish jumps in the pan") before heading for a drink to a cool bar called Soho - apparently it's very popular with the celebrities when they visit Penang and it had pics of the ... read more

20 June 2006 Georgetown, Malaysia Wandering around Chinatown Waking up on the train, I met Alex and Teresa, and English couple, and wasted an hour and a half watching The DiVinci Code on their portable DVD player. Probably the worst Tom Hanks movie since his last one, The Terminal. Movies are so overrated as far as constructive pastimes are concerned. More constructively, I read most of The Postman, a novel Kevin Constner turned into a passable but financially disastrous movie. Naturally, the book was far better then the movie. Upon arrival at Butterworth, best known in Australia as having once been the home of our only overseas airforce base, we jumped on the ferry to Penang and arrived at Georgetown forty minutes later. The hotels ranged from very basic and dirty to very basic and clean, ... read more

We spent 2 weeks travelling through Hong Kong, Singapore & Malaysia. HONG KONG We arrived to a deluge of 'black rain' - so heavy that we could get off the plane, but baggage handlers refused to go out into the weather (for over an hour) to get the bags off for us!! Then we found that hotel had reserved was not what we had wanted, and so had to switch hotels. Then it started raining again - however, aside from all that, we did have a good time in HK!! We tasted the ex-pat lifestyle with Rupert (an ex-work colleague of Helen, currently working in HK), with dinner, drinks & dancing to filipino bands until the small hours of the morning. We explored Central Hong Kong island ... took a bus to visit & buy souvenirs ... read more

Heya guys, now writing from penang, got here yesterday. Air Asia flight from KL, so easy and quick, only 50 mins. Penang is so different from KL, the buildings are all old and crumbling, but it gives it real character. The last few days of drinking and watching the football had caught up on me and stick, both so tired yesterday. I had a quick nap in the afternoon, then we went out for some chinese.mmmmmmm....lovely. Met up with a guy we met in KL, Kiet, hes from Sydney but has been living in the UK for 2 years, and on his way home, the same as Jason really. Didnt see jason again, we got turned away from the Rum Jungle club in KL cus me and stick both had flip-flops on. We walked back to ... read more

Just a quick update, I saw my first wild monkeys of the trip. Brilliant, monkeys are great, one girl even got a photo of a monkey having a sly wank. But then, I was tricked by the monkeys, who sat and posed for photos, while one of their mates walked up the tree, got in position, and pissed on my head. Little bastards.... read more

We had some time in the morning for a little more sightseeing before our flight left in the afternoon. We walked to the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, which wasn’t open yet, so we wandered around the Eastern & Oriental Hotel and then walked though The Garage, a restored old building which is now a mall. Headed back to the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion for the tour. We highly recommend a visit to the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion website, since visitors are asked not to take photos inside the mansion. The tour was one of the best guided tours we’ve been on, largely because the guide was one of the architects responsible for the restoration of the mansion, and she was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The rooms of one wing of the mansion are used as guest ... read more
