Went for another walk today. It wasn't as hot as the last few days as there was really heavy rain overnight and it was still quite overcast. I tried to walk down to a shopping centre but the roads are not made for pedestrians at all. You have to risk walking on the road for most of the walk and the traffic is all over the place. I got as far as a Coffee Bean and Tee Leaf cafe and had some lunch and an iced coffee there, then decided to go back. ... read more

After the hotel breakfast, I decided to get a taxi to the Botanic gardens which are on the edge of Georgetown. This was originally setup by the British in the 19th century when they occupied Penang. The gardens are very picturesque and there are numerous different species of plants. The best thing there though is the rhesus monkeys that roam around like they own the place (which I suppose they do). There were a few mothers with babies that would get a bit arregive if you got too close but on the whole they didn't seem bothered by humans, even when some Chinese kids were trying to irritate them (They had the last laugh by scaring them away). I also saw a big lizard, possible a metre long in a tree. I wouldn't have spotted it ... read more

Checked into the Bayview Hotel and watched 2 football games in my hotel room. I had slept pretty badly in the hostel and had been bitten about 50 times by mosquitos that I decided to chill out for the day. It was Champions League football and I didn't know the results as the games were played at 4am but I was watching the replays at 1pm and 3pm. Ordered a club sandwich from room service too which only cost 4 pounds which is very good for room service. ... read more

Woke up at 10am and didn't feel too bad. My first task was to try and find somewhere more comforable for a couple of days and I got a 3 day booking in the Bayview hotel. I then went to grab some breakfast from the 7-Eleven but when a local tried to push in front of me at the till I probably should have just ignored it but was just tired and he got really aggresive with me. Funny that he was half my size but seeing as there were about 30 other Malaysians about I tried to calm down the idiot and walked away having paid of course! Explored some of the sites and saw some of the British history that has been left here. Wanted to visit the Islamic museum but it was close ... read more

Yes, we are still in Georgetown....we like it! We decided that it a refreshing change to be able to unload the contents of our rucksack for a while and not to have to constantly keep changing beds....and so we settled down to a more detailed look at the life of Georgetown. The original plan was to head to the beach at Batu Ferringhi for a while, but after our day trip mission to give the place the once over we decided to stay put in town. The bus was so old that we didn't think we were going to get there at first anyway! There has been a lot of complaint in the newspaper everyday about the standard of the buses, but if you could overlook the air-conditioning consisting of leaving the door open they served ... read more

After the cool of the Cameron Highlands, the lure of the Malaysian FA Cup was enough to entice one of the party to return to Penang. The first round tie between FA Pulau Pinang ....(yes, the locals spell it, Pinang) and Shahzan Muda was played in front of a packed house at the City Stadium....well maybe not, but the fixture captured the imagination of two passing English. There have been many past reports of match fixing in this part of the world and the collapse of "Pinang's" unassailable 2-0 lead with the aid of two rather dodgy looking penalties near the end had John thinking that perhaps such things are still rife. The mighty Shahzan Muda went on to take the game to extra time and win 4-2 on penalties. The standard was difficult to guage...clearly ... read more

Wednesday 23rd August Well after an hour of waiting we finally left the Cameron Highlands and off we set for Georgetown. Georgetown is an old British colonial town with some nice heritage buildings and just generally a nice place to walk round. Due to the colonial factor Georgetown was the most multicultural place i have been on my trip with many different cultures mixed into this town. Anyway the bus ride there went without event i just read my book and slept a bit. We finally made it to the ferry to take us over to the Island. The ferry accross was really nice as it allowed you to view the island from the sea and get some good pics. When we finally arrived it was around 2PM and the heat was close to unbearable but ... read more

Our first stop in malaysia was the pleasant Georgetown. It is a large mixing pot of numerous people and religions. They all live and work side by side in what appears harmnious conditions. We walked around town all day through the old colonial district with its european architecture (some buildings in a sorry state), little india with bollywood music blaring out pungeant street vendors (not the people) and colourful hindu temples. Chinatown alive with small shops selling antiques, chinese medicines and every kind of curiosity. Also the main budget accomadation area (so we were there too). Then superimposed upon the whole town is islamic culture and mosques. Geoergetown is proud of its history and promotes it throughout the town. It was the first european outpost in mainland malaysia and quickly became a wealthy commercial dock. Sprinkled ... read more

Tired, tired, so tired of the dripping sink! The room Emily and i had in the Cameron Highlands had this sink that started out with a little drip, and then three days later there was a steady stream coming from the underside of the sink. We had already filled up a garbage pail full of water...we became instant plummers last night, and somehow with the work of some athletic tape, and a brochure we stopped the leak enough to sleep undisturbed. Except for those cats! Seriously there was this one cat that yowled the whole night - really makes me miss Tuxedo (who is vocal himself, but not that bad!) So we took a VIP bus (what we are discovering is the only way to go!) to Penang this morning - said goodbye to our new ... read more
