Less than two weeks to go and i'm soooo unprepared for a three month trek to South East Asia with my physio buddy Emily...let alone a later three day rendezvous with another physio compadre (Michelle!) in Australia...then - *gasp* - an adventure down the coast with just me, myself, and I! This is my first such adventure, and i'll admit i'm just as scared as excited. Ok, maybe 60% scared, 40% excited! Anyway, i know this is something i have to do! In addition to all my trip preparation, silly me decided it would be fabulous to increase my stress level by doing the practical component of my acupuncture exam in Toronto two days before i leave - genius!
It will be an amazing trip....stay tuned...
Where do i even start! This blog is going to be really enormous because it's the last five days of my trip - but i'll try and tone it down don't worry (haha). At least enjoy the pictures, if anything! I took the train from Katoomba back to Sydney, and my hostel was a short walk from Central Station (I strategically planned it this way). Friends that i had met along the way had been to this hostel (called Wake Up) ahead of me, so i knew that it was going to be pretty good. It feels kind of like a hotel (big reception, seven floors) except of course for the bunk beds and the communal bathrooms/showers. It's very clean and always buzzing with people and activity. I like as well that (almost everything worth

It was super quiet around Newcastle - i guess i was the only one crazy enough to want to get up that early and head to Sydney! The city was buzzing with rush hour traffic when we arrived three hours later - i was pretty excited, even though i would only be seeing Central Station that day! I hopped a train to Katoomba and got set for my next adventure in the Blue Mountains! The coolness of the mountain air was definitely the first thing to strike me when i got off the train. It really reminded me of how i felt when i got to the Cameron Highlands - definitely time to bring out the long Lulu Lemon
... read more After watching the sunrise in Byron Bay, i was too paranoid to go to sleep in case i didn't wake up - i didn't want to miss my bus! As it turns out, the bus was an hour late (i've never seen that in Oz!) because of the BluesFest traffic and because it was Easter weekend, and my exhausting day was spent doing just about nothing! So i was pretty tired when i got into Coff's Harbour. I stayed at a hostel called "Aussietel", it was pretty cool because the girls there had activities planned ALL THE TIME so there was never really a moment where i had nothing to do! There was a bbq the first night i was there, then a trip to the pub, the next day there were beach activities (since
... read more So the entire reason why i had to plan all the details of my trip as soon as i got to Australia was because of this darn place. The time that i wanted to be in Byron Bay, there is some kind of massive blues festival here (the 18th annual BluesFest!), and all the accomodation was booked up. So i had to sit down and plan out my entire trip so i could squeeze three days in at Byron Bay. But it's definitely worth it! There's kind of one main road here with a bunch of surf shops, restraurants and cafes, travel agents, etc. The beach is absolutely beautiful. I stayed at the Arts Factory which is this funky little resort where you can learn fire twirling and didjeridoo (sp?) making and even stay in

I got into Noosa and ran into three guys that i'd roomed with in Mission Beach, and then the three people that i'd been with on the Whitsunday trip. It was a reunion! I stayed at the YHA Halse Lodge, which is a pretty cool hostel, very roomy and spacious. My roomies are three hilarious girls - two from Ireland, and one from England. We spent a lot of time playing cards and making fun of each other :) It's very expensive and posh here in Noosa. There's a strip of shops down the street from the hostel - little boutiques with overpriced clothing - although i did find the best ice cream shop ever! I
... read more I find it really odd that I've met more people here from Edmonton than I've met from in Canada, total. Isn't that weird? Is there anyone left in Edmonton right now....or are they all with me in sunny Australia!?!? There were no Edmontonians with me on my trip to Fraser Island (although i did meet two of them who were with a different group our first night camping!) but there were four Swedish guys, a guy from England and a guy from Canada (Grand Forks), an Irish guy, a German guy, a French girl, and myself!!! There were only two groups heading to Fraser that day, and somehow I ended up with all the guys! Actually i was really, really happy with my group - they were such amazing and funny people. Group two, on
... read more Here is some interesting information about 1770 - this town is the only one in Australia to have a number for its name. This is the spot where the famous explorer, Captain James Cook, sailed into Bustard Bay back in 1770. As far as i know, it's not even really a town, but a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. Again, like most places in Australia, it's really, really beautiful. We arrived in Agnes Water (these two town are super close to each other) to find out there was some kind of mysterious "incident" and therefore no beds at the hostel i was supposed to stay at (Cool Bananas). We ended up at 1770 Southern Cross which is more of a tourist resort than a backpackers hostel, but lovely all the same. (I've been

I stayed at a hostel called Scotty's - very chilled and friendly. I didn't get many pictures of the actual beach because every time i had time to take pictures, it would mysteriously start pouring. It didn't actually rain too much while i was there, but when it did, it was a torrential downpour! Like most areas up here, you can't swim in the water either because it's stinger season. My first night there i met a couple of crazy (!) Aussie's that worked either at the guesthouse, or around (i heard a lot of complaints / injuries with machetes while banana

It's world's apart from Asia, and even though it felt more like home it's still world's apart from that too. 24 hours of travel (Bangkok to Singapore, Singapore to Brisbane, Brisbane to Cairns) and i finally met up with a friendly face from home - Michelle! (It's cool to just meet a friend in one of the most awesome places in the world!) Michelle was at the end of her Australia trip, so we had three days together to experience Northern Queensland! Our hostel was very cool - the people here will charm the pants off you, and they can talk you into anything - which is how i got talked into scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef! (More about that later!) Michelle

Our train had a 70 minute delay so we arrived at about 930am instead. I got a great vibe from the city right away (and cities haven't really been my fav here, save for KL). We're staying in a backpacker part of town with lots of markets around, so browsing and shopping has been awesome. (Cynthia and Jason, this will interest you!) Our first night, Emily and I took a tuk-tuk to Lumphini stadium to see a Muy Thai boxing match. First of all, a tuk-tuk is hard to describe so you'll just have to look at the picture! Anyway on our way
