On Saturday we took the bus out to the town of Air Itam, where we marvelled at the magnificent Kek Lok Si temple with it's famous Ban Po ("million Bhuddas Precious Pagoda"). We were also particularly delighted to find a turtle pond (although, yep, you've guessed it, there was a 'floater'). In the afternoon we took the 30 minute Fenicular railway ride up to the top of Bukit Bandera ("Penang Hill") an 821m Colonial Hill Station and a very welcome 5 degrees cooler than the city. Lunch on the garden terrace of the Bellevue hotel was somewhat spoiled by the appearance of a green PIT VIPER in the vines above our table...oh yes, wait 'til we develop the photos! Up on the hill we also saw wild Resus Monkeys, strangely striped squirrels, a red lizard and ... read more

We arrived in Malaysia on wednesday morning, crossing the border from Thailand at Pedang Besar and continuing onto Butterworth. From there, we took the ferry to Penang's capital Georgetown and secured accomodation in the "Hang Chow Hotel" (in Chinatown). We spent a couple of days exploring Georgetown, a truly multi-cultural experience: after ascending the KOMTAR building for an awesome view of the city we visited Mosques (including receiving an impromptu tour of the Kapitan Kling Mosque from a very helpful Indian chap), Hindu and Chinese temples, Chinese Secret society houses (Khoo and Cheah Kongsis), an Islamic museum in an Arabic Mansion (Syed Atalas) and enjoyed the sights and sounds of Little India and Chinatown.... read more

WE rented a car for one of the days and drove around the island abit. Went to an Oriental village which was nice, and went on the longest Cable Car in the world !!! it was pretty nerve jangling, but the view at the top was amazing..... Arrived on the island of Penang yesterday via ferry. Today is Chinese New year and almost everything is closed which is a bit crap really. We are being forced to eat in McDonalds and Pizza Hut today as they are the only food joints ... read more

I travelled to Georgetown on Penang Island with Andrew, a Canadian who I had been trekking with in Cameron Highlands. On arriving in our 'recomended' place of stay, he discovered Bed Bugs in his mattress. At this he got really depressed, while I sat feeling slightly bemused at our luck. Neither of us were particularly willing to stay - but the owner changed the mattresses, and as it was late in the day, we risked it. Although neither of us were bitten, I for sure did not sleep. Little creatures somehow manage to prevent sleep more than the big ones. The rest of the hostel was really clean though and had a good atmosphere - so with a new room key in hand - we boldly stayed put. Georgetown was just another city in Malaysia though, ... read more
