As we didn't like Taman Negara we travelled to Georgetown at night by bus. We left Temeloh at 22h and arrived in Georgetown around 5h30am. We had already an address where to stay and shared a taxi with an italian couple. We decided to spend our last week in Malaysia in Georgetown as it is a city full of history and positive energies. We spend some days discovering the city centre - Penang is linked to the Peninsular Malaysia via the longest bridge in Asia as well as the oldest cross-channel ferry service in the country which we took to go to Butterworth station where our night train will bring us to Thailand-Bangkok our next destination before heading to India. Georgetown is an elegant colonial city, mixing modern skyscrapers and unique old city centre, declared a ... read more

We left you on the beach of Ko Phangan.. living by Thai time, sunbathing and drinking cocktails in the sun. Things took a turn to the less relaxed atmosphere; The imminent 10 hour bus and ferry journey Penang Malaysia. We didn't go out, we packed the night before, and we set an early alarm; we were prepared! We were wrong! A tourist mini bus down to Malaysia is not what you would expect. Cramming 16 people (and their rucksacks) into a 16 seater minibus with broken seats and barely working air con is bad enough - throw in a fake 10 baht immigration cost and a moody thai woman, that shouts down the phone, and is importing (suspiciously illegal) food (aka - cleverly packaged drugs/ people) into the country and now we have a ball game! ... read more

It used to be a colonial mansion back when female dresses had to reach their ankles. Since the start of our trip we have never really planned more than a couple of days at a time, so we decided to grab a flight to Bangkok with Dennis and Nicole from Ha Noi and spent a couple of days weighing up where to continue our adventure. After saying goodbye to them after travelling on and off for around 5 weeks, our last trip was all squeezing into a tuk-tuk to take us to our hotels, we said goodbye and checked into our home for the next 4 days. We spent our whole time going through different plans as to where to go, shopped for new clothes and caught the second state of origin match in between ... read more

Arranging transport to cross into Malaysia was very easy, as everything in Thailand. We knew we would miss that convenience for sure but also we were excited about some challenges we may encounter when traveling around Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia. It is extremely easy to get lazy and let other people do/plan things for you but it takes the excitement out of the journey a little bit, I think. We were taken directly to Georgetown in Palau Penang and dropped just at the corner of a famous Love Lane. There happened to be a guesthouse just where we were standing, together with a Burger Stall which made amazingly looking and smelling sandwiches and they offered us a room with AC and Wi-Fi for 30 RMB/10$ only. It was late evening and we were tired of whole ... read more

Coming from Koh Samui the bus is 14 hours roughly to Penang. When you first leave Koh Samui everything seems so organised, the agent hands you a ticket and tells you a time. The surface of the operation is very much organised, however after being on the bus for little over an hour i was dropped at the foot of another, larger bus, the driver asked me where i was going and i told him Penang. Without checking the ticket he welcomed me aboard and gave me a sticket labelled 'Penang'. From this point on, losing this sticker would be the difference between making it to Penang or being stranded in God knows where. A series of buses led me to the boat crossing from Samui to the mainland. As the night before i hadnt slept ... read more

You could kind of sense that our trip was quickly coming to an end. That being said, we had two more exciting ports to get off before we said goodbye to our delicious home on the seas. The first of which was Georgetown, Penang. It was going to be an odd type of day. For other ports we would arrive early in the morning and there wouldn’t be too much movement around as people would just wake up and organize getting off the ship. However today we were due to get into port at midday, so it had a different type of buzz about the day. It was in a way a lot of standing around waiting for the ship just to dock, and you could see the land so tantalizingly close as we dawdled into ... read more

Aoife and I arrived in Penang island, connected to mainland Malaysia by bridge, on the evening of January 12th by ferry from Langkawi. Upon arrival, the taxi drivers swarmed the area putting pressure on people arriving. We planned to get a free shuttle bus as it was our understanding that the guesthouse was less than ten minutes away. The taxi drivers told us that the shuttle was not running at this time of year which turned out to be untrue. Then another taxi driver hounded us asking where we were going. He was adamant that our guesthouse was 20 minutes away and we agreed a fixed price. Turned out it was just over 5 minutes around the corner. I questioned his earlier lie and he just got angry with us. "Keep your f##king money" he said ... read more

If you are still reading this blog after all these months then, god bless you for the loyalty! So, where are we now I hear you cry? We have had a jolly good time in Georgetown, surely the home of the most fantastic food in the world (ok, a big claim!) Loving the mix of Malay, Indian and Chinese influences - did a spot of hands on cooking - making the fabulous Redang and a Pineapple Curry (it tastes better than it sounds!). Had the insiders tour from a local (thanks Tristian). Visited Penang Hill, just when it was foggy so saw bugger all - great timing! Done some more temples and the locals are so fantastic. Little old lady (trying not to be stereotypical but she was old, and little) took a liking to us ... read more

Having visited many places in Thailand over the years and having watched most of these succumb to mass tourism, this time we were merely passing through. Free fifteen day visas are granted to most European nationals at land-crossings, thirty days if you fly in, or sixty (for a price) if gained at an embassy pre-arrival. With the ever increasing openness between ASEAN countries and the ready availability of inter-country buses (these may be minibuses or coaches) there is nothing to be gained these days (save the kudos and the small joys of roughing it with the locals) from complex multi-bus journeys that actually work out to be more expensive as well as massively more time consuming. So, it’s simply a case of source the cheapest bus and ride from one country to the next. The only ... read more
