Next on our agenda was Langkawi, our final destination in Malaysia. This place was supposed to be expensive. However, since it is tax-free, it is the cheapest place for beers, our biggest expense... The ferry from Penang to Langkawi was sickening. I managed to hold my food from the night before inside me, but only just. Mary wished she was on an other planet or dead, or both. The sea was rougher than a unshaven arse, not a pretty sight, I can assure you. After an hour or two we had Langkawi or Langwaky as Mary likes to call it in sight. The islands look out of this world, so fantastically beautiful. There are 99 islands in total although I think they made this up for the sakes of having a nice number. Anyway, all of ... read more

Langkawi 25th March 2008 As I'm over 3 months behind on my blogs, i thought I'd enter some up to date blogs and work backwards so you have more current info on what I'm up to! Alarm went off for the reception in the KL hostel at 5am and woke me from my deep sleep. Decided to get up as my alarm was due to go off in 5 minutes anyway. Thankfully I was all organized and packed ready for my flight to Langkawi. Made a quick cup of tea and checked my emails before i set off. Checked the weather outside, looked dry and noticed a taxi parked up outside. Left my nice brew and set off. On way out a big rat run straight in front of me and down into the gutters. ... read more

Huoneet irtoaa 10 eurosta ylospain. Tanaan otettiin 1litrainen ruoska alle ja lahdettiin tutkimaan saarta. Auto irtosi 24tunniksi 10eurolla ja 10euron pantilla. Ajettiin uskomattoman mahtavan upealle Black Sand Beachille, jossa istuttiin minuutti ja jatkettiin matkaa. Parin kymmenen kilometrin paasta loytyi oikeasti hieno ranta (jonka nimea en muista, johtuen huonosta malesiankielen taidosta), jossa maattiin ja... read more

Lohduttavaa kuulla, etta neljaa ihmista Niittarissa on jossain vaiheessa kiinnostanut onko meikalainen kuollut. Ja ihme, etta on tullut kommentteja vaikka melkein kaikki kommentoijat on itse matkalla. Hyva Julio, Kipe ja poijjaat... Tanaan oltiin shoppailemassa ja katsomassa kaloja joten eipa mitaan kerrottavaa. Siispa laitan vanhoja kuvia, jotta paastaan ajan tasalle.... read more

Eli toisin s... read more

Ohhoh... Onpa taasen vierahtanyt tovi sitten viime kuulumisten. He ottivat taksin Phuketista suoraan Krabiin ja kun me palailtiin autoreissulta, asuttiinkin sita yhtakkia taas vastapaisissa bungaloweissa. Martti, Jonsson ja Nelli ol... read more

We have been living on Canang beach for the last three days and celebrated our anniversary here. The locals are very friendly and no one bothers you at all. The Malay people are very gentle and considerate and as always we try to learn and respect local customs as best as we can. Learning simple phrases is not required as everyone speaks english but I get the feeling it's appreciated. If you come here remember to take your shoes off when entering anyones home, point with your thumb not your finger, dress for the occasion as best as you can. This is a muslim country but there is a tolerance for tourists (just don't make us look bad). We have an air conditioned place right on the beach with a volleyball court right in front of ... read more

Our next destination on the trip was Pulau Pangkor, a small island on the west coast of Malaysia. Pangkor turned out to be a cute, quiet and low key-resort with nice beaches and very cute pink taxis. We stayed at a hostel right next to the beach and slept our nights in a small simple hut. We enjoyed the beachlife and the relaxed atmosphere of the island and just laid back for two days. We also met up with Anna and Ville and had some excellent seafood, again... I noticed that the sun was a bit stronger than I expected and I've now moved from sunblock 20 to 50! After resting for a couple of days we were ready for some action again. We took an early morning ferry and continued with a Super VIP-bus towards ... read more

Pictures of our recent (and only) break since arriving in Malaysia. Jay and I have just returned from a trip to Langkawi - it is an island off the northwest coast of Malaysia (very close to Thailand). We relaxed, pigged-out and went kayaking most days. We went on 2 nature walks at our resort - one in the morning and one at night. Our resort was situated in the jungle so there was LOTS to see. At night the flying lemurs were in full "swing" as were some bats and ghekos (who sounded like dogs barking). In the morning the monkeys were waking up. We had both macaques (the cheeky ones) and dusty langurs (the docile cute ones). We loved the langurs but the macaques were very bold and were taking over. The females have their ... read more

Langkawi hosts between 99 and 104 islands - depending on who you talk to and whether the tide is up or down. It's on the west coast of Malaysia, just south of the Thai border. Reminiscent of Thailand - but quieter, lazier and unspoiled by pushy touts peddling 'same same' t-shirts. Pantai Cenang, Langkawi's gorgeous main beach, features a wide strip of beach, with sand like cocaine (ironic in a country where drugs are a guaranteed death penalty) and fabulous palm trees overflowing with coconuts. There's one main road, with a strip of shops, budget hotels and restaurants which spill out onto the beach. I suspect Pantai Cenang is what Bali would have been like back in the day. Quite the find. The plan was holiday before hard-core travel. Jessie, my dear friend and Port Melbourne ... read more
