Next on our agenda was Langkawi, our final destination in Malaysia. This place was supposed to be expensive. However, since it is tax-free, it is the cheapest place for beers, our biggest expense...
The ferry from Penang to Langkawi was sickening. I managed to hold my food from the night before inside me, but only just. Mary wished she was on an other planet or dead, or both. The sea was rougher than a unshaven arse, not a pretty sight, I can assure you. After an hour or two we had Langkawi or Langwaky as Mary likes to call it in sight. The islands look out of this world, so fantastically beautiful. There are 99 islands in total although I think they made this up for the sakes of having a nice number. Anyway, all of them are uninhabited except for the main island named, you guessed it Langkawi.
We decided to stay in a place called Pantai Tengah, at Zackry's Guesthouse. An excellent choice! Cooking facilities (no not for me, Mary of course..), nice lounging area etc. We quickly found out that the beer was in fact cheaper than water. I thought I had died and gone to
heaven. Some really nice people from merry old England were already staying there for some time, a good bunch. More about them later( Heidi, Kel beware..).
The beach at Pantai Tengah is simply stunning. Islands in front, turquoise water and blindingly white sand. Add to that a temperature of about 34 degrees and yes, you got it, I was in heaven again, this time still living. Of course there are a few let downs, firstly men in speedo's, secondly knobs on jet skis. Overall though I would rate it a solid 8.
We decided to hire a car for a few days. When I say car I don't mean the variety that you see in Europe or other western countries. The type; a Perodua Kacil, the engine; a coffee grinder(660 cc), the experience to drive one; terrifying! The thing runs like an over-sized vibrator and corners not at all. Keeping in mind that Langkawi has quite a few hills you can imagine my sheer horror when seeing a steep hill coming in sight. Thank God for tailwind.
We drove, well sort off, to a place called Seven Wells Falls with Heidi and Kel in the back. I guess
all of us weigh more than the “vehicle”. To get to the Falls you need to climb an awful lot of steps to get to the Seven Wells but it was definitely worth the effort. My God what a view. You could cool of in one of the wells which we did for an hour or so.
A few days later, Heidi, Kel and us decided to hire a car again and do a proper island tour. This time our first stop was a crocodile farm. This sounds lame but hold on. There were a number of different varieties from all over the world in all different sizes. We were getting bored quite quickly but then all of a sudden a massive banging noise. The big boys were having a good old fight. Brilliant, we got our money's worth. A couple of crocs about 4 meters long were fighting to be King of the pond. Never seen anything like it. Heads banging in to each other, blood in the water. Next up was some show with some guys and crocs. Not cool, so we left.
Next stop was another waterfall, this one being the highest on the island.
When we got there we saw that this one was stunning. Jungle all around, a pool at the bottom and high as an estate in Peckham. We had a good old dip in the pool and took pictures like a bunch of Japanese tourists on their only day off in the year.
We then headed for Kuah, the islands capital, and had a good lunch. Visited a few markets etc. Afterwards old Grandad was tired so we went back to our guesthouse where some cold brewskies where waiting for us. A great day all in all. The rest of the days we spent either on the beach or lounging in the guesthouse. Mary didn't make any friends when she decided to have a good session of Sex and the City. Dear God what a load of rubbish. Needless to say that Kel and I went fishing instead. Surprisingly we caught some fish.
Next stop; Thailand
