We arrived in Don Det around noon with a group of backpackers. Sarah and I chose one of the first guesthouses we saw, only 20 000 kip ($2 CND) a night. It closely resembled a garden shed, but was conveniently situated along the Mekong with two hammocks on the porch. After putting our bags down we continued on with the group to a bakery, owned and operated by a Western Australian man. Sarah and I were starving and indulged in a homemade chocolate-banana donut covered in sugar, we then shared a pumpkin soup and foccacia with mushrooms, onions and tomatoes. We made our way back to our hut and vegged out for the rest of the afternoon. The essence of our time in Don Det was a lot of time spent swinging and reading in our ... read more

As if we weren't relaxed enough after our stay in Vang Vieng we decided to head down to Don Det, a little island in the middle of the Mekong river, where life is about as relaxed as you can get. Getting there involved a flight to Savannakhet then a 3 hour mini bus ride to Pakse where we were originally supposed to fly to but apparently that airport was closed. (it was a pretty nice trip though as we were the only passengers in the airports very new looking mini bus, with a driver and his friend who seemed very happy to leave work for the day to drive us) Once we arrived in Pakse we left our lovely air conditioned mini bus and crammed into a local "bus" (basically a pick up truck with ... read more

Having left Pakse, we made our way south towards the 4 Thousand Islands. We had intended to go to Don Khong initially, but our bus driver ended up going further south and dropped us off at Don Det. So we just went with it and adjusted our plans, we checked into a small place overlooking the Mekong River, we had a bamboo room with enough room for a small double bed and a little attached toilet & shower and a big long shared balcony overhanging the river below. It was a great little spot and we spent the afternoon drinking on the balcony with other travellers, and into the night we stopped at a local reggae bar where the menu served everything and anything including Happy cakes, happy shakes and the 'hangover breakfast' as it was ... read more

We left early the next morning on a double bamboo raft type ferry type thing with all the daily commuters who were going to work - scooters and all! We then got a mini bus (we ended up on the end of row ejector seat type things again!) to 4000 islands in the very south of Laos. The roads were petty bumpy and things had gotten a lot less developed since we had left Pakse and it was really lovely to get see real local life and talk to proper villagers. Because of the massive storm the night before, when we arrived at the ferry point to go over to Don Det it became very apparent I would be wishing that the worlds heaviest bag weren’t so heavy! (I know, yes, we can put them on ... read more

Hello all this blog will be me gettin up to date untill i reached Cambodia where I am now. So i left off with me sortin the visas for Cambodia, after Me and Dan decided to do our usual city wonder to see wat was about, we found the Laos version of the ark d triumph, exactly like the french one but a little more oriental, was pretty nice but wat amazed us more was the giant bees nest that had been made there, it must have been atleast 4ft long and when i zoomed in with my camera we realised it was actually a livin swarm of bees, would not like to be the one that has to clean that at sum point. We chilled here for a while watchin the world go by then ... read more

Just as we thought Laos couldn’t get anymore laid back we arrived in Si Phan Don, it took us 2 attempts to make it here as the first time we went to Don Khong, the larger island to visit the only bank in order to exchange some money for US dollars so we could get our Cambodia visa. The trip from Pakse on the local bus or Songthaew (2 benches) was something of an experience with 31 other passengers, including 2 people on the roof, 25 crates of beerlao and 20 plus backpacks. We stopped on route so the locals could buy treats such as beetles and cockroaches on sticks! This was on Thursday 16th, however the bank was closed until Monday because of the New Year festival, which seems to be celebrated for about a ... read more

Happy Easter and Happy Lunar New Year, which is tomorrow in Thailand and here in 2 days. I didn't get to leave Banlung on the intended day due to the tour shop failing at securing me a ticket so I had one last day to pass the time with - this led to me cycling 15km through the villages and down the dusty red dirt roads to another waterfall. On arrival the skies turned unbelievably rapidly into a swirling mass of dark damp clouds. Then the monsoon started. Incredibly heavy rain and brutal wind combined to slap my face and blind my vision. On top of this, as I said I was 15km away on a stinking push bike who's capacity of being a mountain bike failed very quickly into simply being a one gear plough, ... read more

Ahhh Laos.... beautiful green spaces, friendly people, stunning temples and unspoiled oasis's of tranquillity! Arriving in Vientiane was a strange experience as my general impression of capital cities is that they are busy, noisy, and dirty, but Vientiane was none of these things- it was the most relaxed, peaceful city which seemed to have more temples than cars! And to my delight Laos only got better from there, I think that Luang Prabang is one of the most beautiful cities Ive ever seen- so good in fact they have made the whole city a world heritage site! Strolling round the charming cobbled streets lined with gracefully understated colonial French architecture to the sound of prayer bells and chanting monks was a blissfully therapeutic experience. After four days of gently ambling about town stopping every now and ... read more

After a couple of days in Phnom Penh sorting out our Laos visas, we make a dash for the border at Strung Treng. The no-mans' land stretching 20kms on both sides is dusty and begging for the rains to begin. It's really barren, bearing the scars of slash-and-burn agriculture. Each isolated homestead seems to be scraping a living, yet huge satellite dishes sit in every yard. It's not the most inspiring first glimpse of Laos, but that makes what's just around the corner even more special. Within half an hour of the border crossing we're loaded up into a narrow long boat and heading to Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands). You would not believe that such an oasis could exist so close to the landscape we've just driven through. The Mekong widens here to encompass ... read more

In case your all wondering, yes that sunset was as good as it looked. In fact it basically looked like that every night... I was amazing. As soon as I arrived on Don Det which is basically a tiny little backpackers island amongst the 4000 Islands in Laos, I got a hot tip to head to the west side of the island for the best huts... basically because of the sunsets. A boy, it did not disappoint. I spent a lovely four days and nights on Don Det and once again it was one of those places 'you had to want to go to' as there was't much else around. It just on the Laos side of the boarder between it and Cambodia and about 3 hrs south of Pakse. Apparently it’s also one of the ... read more
