Firstly let me begin by saying longtime no hear (from me that is)! Thanks for the emails wondering if I am still alive! I am as it turns out so sorry for the delay in updates. Its been a busy month and a half and I have travelled southern Loas, Cambodia, Singapore and now Malaysia since I wrote last so I have some catching up to do! So please be patient and I hope to write up some stuff very soon. But for now I will just put this one (a little longer than usual so sorry if it takes a while to download at home). This should then bring me to the end of my Laos adventure and my next update will be about Cambodia. So anyway here it is...The Motorcycle Diaries! As the sun ... read more

So we managed to heave ourselves out of the hammocks and get on the road again! First stop was Pakse, a travelhub, and what seemed to us to be really expensive with nothing nice to make it worthwhile! For this reason we trapsed around for a while trying to find the cheapest room possible and made the decision to leave early the next morning. Hhhmmmm......our lesson is learned....cheapest isn't always good! The proprietors thought it nice to throw into the value of the cell-like room; 1) Peeling paint, 2) Shared bathroom - never been cleaned in the life of the building and mounds of green gunge growing from everywhere! 3) Mould patches everywhere....but hey we've dealt with India, so we thought all this would be ok....apart from.... 4).......And the BONUS PRIZE............A chronic infestation of BEDBUGS!!....I'll say ... read more

Hiya After we left Don Det Island (loved it!) we got the bus back to Pakse and stayed two nights. On Don Det, we got a recommendation to rent a motorbike and visit the Bolaven Plateau in Southern Laos. So we spent that extra night in Pakse and rented a motorbike. Dury drove and I held on for dear life!! Not really.... Dury was actually a very good driver. I had a quick go but I was rubbish. We didn't make it all the way round the route we were recommended but we visited two waterfalls and got to the next town (Pakxong) and then turned back. It was really cool. Seeing the villages from a motorbike is a real eye-opener - you get to see just how little they have! All the houses are made ... read more

The last third of our second stay in Laos continued the thematic trend set by the first two; that of water and stupor. The only differences being that the water, rather than flowing lazy and muddy past our bungalow as the Mekong, now came predominantly from above, in the form of rain, and several impressive waterfalls. The soporific stupor engendered by dwindling funds did not change however. The location for all this soggy laziness was the Bolivan Plateau, a large raised area of land over 1000 meters high, east of Pakse in the predominately flat south. It was the topography (as well as the time of year) that caused all the precipitation to be so impressive; the monsoon clouds were drawn upwards to the Plateau where they dumped their volumous bounty regularly upon our heads which, ... read more

With over 200km to travel today, we were slightly apprehensive due to the problems we had the previous couple of days with the back tyre. However, by 7.45am we were checked out and raring to go! First stop was the petrol station to fill up our little baby but with a very small amount of money remaining we hoped she would not guzzle too much! The night before had brought a huge monsoon storm and we hoped that the roads had not been too badly damaged! As we trundled along at a steady pace, the inevitable happened and the back of the bike began to wobble. On closer inspection, the rear tyre was completely flat once again and we set about our now usual routine! Mark carried the bags as Ollie pushed the heavy bike along ... read more

7 in the morning arrives quickly and Mark and I jump enthusiastically out of bed...to discover that the A/C unit in our lovely room had been very busy leaking all night and the floor was awash with water. How i laughed when Mark's bag was soaked, only to find out on closer inspection that mine had suffered a similar fate! After sorting all this out and leaving our big bags behind at the hotel we hopped onto out new bike and wobbled down the road. The night before we had met two lovely ladies who were about to embark on the same journey as us so we had agreed to meet outside their hotel at 8 to ride together, for safety of course! When we pulled up outside their hotel they were just recieving their bikes ... read more

I sucked it up and flew from Luang Prabang to Pakse in order to save several days'' travel time and be able to make time in southern Laos. This meant skipping Vang Vieng and Vientiane, neither one of which I lamented much. Spent one day touring the Bolaven Plateau with Green Discovery (GD). Originally, I wanted to strike out on my own but the cost of renting a motorbike and/or a guide was more than I planned for. After dropping by the GD office and realizing I was the only person interested, I went about my afternoon generating interest and creating that more people were going to pop in over the course of the day so we could get a group together and share the costs. It worked! Five of us set out to visit coffee ... read more

We have rented a 100cc Honda dream scooter from Lankham Hotel in Pakse for a sum of 7 dollars a day and today is going to be the start of our 3 day trip around the Bolaven Plateau .All kitted up with a map one bag with some clothes, cameras and some cash we hit the road around 9.30am for a 80 kilometre ride to a place called Tat Lo where there is a few waterfalls and also some nice guesthouses to stay in that look out over the waterfalls PERFECT!! So we are cursing along nicely with the wind in our hair as neither of the helmets the scooter rental place fitted our heads and with Barbs being in need of a toilet at a moment’s notice we had safety as our main concern, after ... read more
