We arrived back in Saigon from Mui Ne late in the afternoon and checked into the same hotel we had stayed in for the last few visits to the city. Getting our suitcases that they had been holding while we have been off travelling around we got some clean clothes on and headed out into the madness for a spot of shopping and something to eat and for a change we decided to try some KFC since the last time we ate any junk food we were in New Zealand. After munching our way through a couple of bits of what we hope was chicken we couldn’t stop thinking why do people eat this crap and with the nice fresh food we have been eating over the last few weeks this made it taste like S@%T!! ... read more

We left early for the 5 hour bus ride up the coast to Mui Ne which is a small fishing village just north of Saigon for our weeks R’n’R and really the only bit of true luxury we had been excited about since we left New Zealand. After doing a lot of research on the Internet last year we found a resort called the Mui Ne Sailing Club. It was going to be the last part of our trip and we were looking forward to some relaxing time on the beach and with the reviews and photos that we had seen of the resort and specially the Bungalow that we had booked for the week we were so happy to get there. After the journey in the bus which was quite cool as it was a ... read more

But still it’s very cool to be back in the madness which is Saigon to some and Ho Chi Minh City to others. We travelled by plane from Vientiane via Phnom Penh then a short 20 mins flight to Saigon, Straight out of the airport grab the first taxi man we see and tell him we have been here before, we know it doesn’t cost $45 dollars from the airport, here is $18 dollars, Take us here!! No Bullshit!!! Now you may be thinking that I sound a little bit on the pissed off side but I’ve ... read more

What can I say the good people at Lao airlines must have seen us coming!! As they decided to have another training day for their pilots but I will say it was a lot better than the last time we flew with them. Also for anyone thinking of flying with them please do so as they are not too bad and it sure beats 10 hours on a bus .They just need to work a little on the landing part which is kind of important and as soon as they get that mastered they will be fine.. Okay we have arrived and the City is quite a surprise we booked into the Intercity Hotel which after negotiating a very cheap room rate that we promised the very smiley lady at the reception that I wouldn’t ever ... read more

PAKSE- After our adventures around the Bolaven Plateau we spent the next two days in Pakse recovering and doing a few wee sightseeing tours. And being on the go since we left London 5 weeks ago we haven’t had a day just to catch up and do jack shit all so this was the perfect time. We spent the first day with a good sleep in and then had a look around the shops, which we will say it’s the only time that a extra large t shirt hasn’t fitted as it was to small but never mind what can you say at $1.50 a pop you can’t go wrong! After that it was back to the hotel and we had room service for lunch, lay on the bed and did not a hell of a ... read more

We have rented a 100cc Honda dream scooter from Lankham Hotel in Pakse for a sum of 7 dollars a day and today is going to be the start of our 3 day trip around the Bolaven Plateau .All kitted up with a map one bag with some clothes, cameras and some cash we hit the road around 9.30am for a 80 kilometre ride to a place called Tat Lo where there is a few waterfalls and also some nice guesthouses to stay in that look out over the waterfalls PERFECT!! So we are cursing along nicely with the wind in our hair as neither of the helmets the scooter rental place fitted our heads and with Barbs being in need of a toilet at a moment’s notice we had safety as our main concern, after ... read more

We left Cambodia the same day that Laos Airlines must have been having a training day for their pilots, there was one part during the landing that we honestly thought that we were going to die but thankfully we touched down in Pakse in Southern Laos and proceeded with the usual 20 stage Visa process which seems to been the norm in South East Asia. Visas Done!! Now after a 2 hour van ride which we have now learnt that 2 hours actually means 5 hours in Laos, we board the boat finally for the last part of the days travel and after all the sore arses, near death plane rides we arrive at what must be the most chilled out place that we have ever visited!!!!!!!!! Don Det is part of the Si Phan Don ... read more

After waking at 3am sweating madly and the felling that my stomach wanted to leave my body out of any orifice it could find. I knew it was my turn to have what most people get when they travel in this part of the world a dose of the shits!! Now we both knew that this would happen at some stage but when you’ve got to sit on a bus for 5 hours it’s not the kind of thing you want. So it’s off on the bus armed with rolls of toilet paper and spare undies we start our 5 hour bus trip to Siem Reap which is the city that has the amazing Angkor Temples close by. Arriving in Siem Reap with my stomach still in one piece we are instantly surround by Kids trying ... read more

So we are now in Phnom Penh which is the capital of Cambodia. It’s a lot bigger than we expected and the poverty is really in your face and after the terrible past these people have really come along way. The thought of what happened here less than 30 years ago with the Khmer Rouge regime and all the horrible things that happened in this city and the rest of the country has hit home pretty hard with what we have seen over the last couple of days it has been a huge eye opener to say the least. First of all we arrived with very sore bones after our death defying boat ride up the Mekong River too find that all the hotels that we had looked at over the internet where full so we ... read more

We have finally arrived in Vietnam after a anxious wait in Auckland airport for our visas to be emailed to us from Hanoi they arrived with 14 mins to go before the flight closed so you could imagine the stress not knowing if we were able to get in or not, no worries though we made it in the end and we would like to say a big thank you to Uncle Bob for all your help in Invercargill last Saturday. Saigon baby!! Well what can I say the first thing that gets you is the traffic! I have never seen so many scooters in all my life. They seem to have only one rule and that is to blast there horn as loud as possible and drive where and with whatever they like, We’ve seen ... read more
