How much change can there really be just walking across one little border? The answer: A lot. I could still see China from the back off the Tuc-Tuc Pickup that took me away form the border, on one of my better days, I could still just about spit internationally, and already I was both overwhelmed and relieved with the change around me as I puttered into northern Laos and Luang Namtha. I was overwhelmed by how different things seemed, and I was relieved by how much more easy and relaxed things seemed here. My inrtoduction to Laos was truly brilliant. I arrived at the Laos side of the border on foot and asked (in english) where the VISA window was. They told (in english) the correct window. I got to the window and they had to ... read more

After a few non eventful stops on the way to the border we have now left Thailand and entered into Laos. Our first night in Laos was spent in a small border town by the Mekong river where we immediately felt an overwhelming desire to leave. Eventually we reached our destination of Luang Nam Tha. We had heard that Luang Nam Tha offered a lot of good trekking and kayaking tours so we were keen to give it a go. We at first investigated kayaking tours but found out that they were booked out by a private group for the next few days and that the tour was not what we had imagined anyway. We also found that the treks were not quite what we had expected. So we decided just to go on a one ... read more

Ahoy there my hearties!!! I was so excited about coming here because it's the gateway town to base yourself for a trek into the Nam Tha National protected area of primary jungle and home to Tigers, Various Primates, Elephant, you get the idea. So upon visiting various different trek operators to find the best trek and deal in town the whole thing started to look a little dismal. Firstly being two of only a few foreigners in town there were no groups to make up numbers to keep the cost down so for us to go into the area for a 3 day trek the cheapest was nearly $300!!! $300 here is like GBP1000 at home, second for this fee all the companies do is take you into the heart of the small southern part of ... read more

MORE PHOTOS HERE In Luang Nam Tha, I check in Zuela, a lovely wood and brick guest house, probably the cleanest and nicest place I've stayed in so far in the region, if not the cheapest. In the lobby, I meet Jackie, an outgoing Aussie who came here for the same reason as me, trekking, and is looking for companions to bring the cost down. We both sign up for a 2-day trek that will take us through the jungle to an Akha tribe village, where we will spend the night. The Green Discovery staff warns us about the conditions of the path, which is expected to be muddy (no shit?!) and difficult--but if we are exhausted on the second day, there is a shortcut back home... In the end, we were very lucky with the ... read more

Laos, here I am. :) Dafuer einige ... read more

I arrived in Luang Nam Tha after what was quite a pleasant bus ride actually. No fancy airconditioned bus, just an old fashioned rattling bus with the windows open, just the way it should be and how I like it. The ride from Luang Prabang was quite mountainous for the lager part of it. Very spectacular, especially with the rain pounding on the windows for the better part of the day. At a certain point we all had to get out and help dragging a fallen tree off the road, for the bus to continue. It took about 9 hours in total, not too bad. I got some wonderful accomodation, I believe it was 40.000 Kip for what was basically a budget hotel room. Attached bathroom with hot shower and western toilet, a massive bed and ... read more

Vientiane We arrived into the capital of Laos, Vientiane, after a long bus journey from Tha Khaek. We had heard mixed reports about the City, some saying it was bland with little to do and some saying it was a lovely place with a relaxed atmosphere and lovely bars and cafes. We definitely agreed with the second opinion, the town was a very easy place to spend time, which was just as well as we ended up having to spend 5 nights here whilst we waited for our visa for Vietnam to be sorted out. We spent the days wondering around the streets, visiting the markets, admiring the beautiful Wats and drooling over the fantastic French restaurants and bakeries (who served the best fresh baguettes we’ve possibly ever had!) Matt Writes ; We have spent the last two days driving through Northern Thailand. Two long bus journeys from Chang Mai to Chang Rai, then to Chiang Khong where we stamped ourselves out of Thailand and crossed the Mekong in a longboat (wobbling from the wieght of our backpacks) into Laos. Our next aim is to continue North to get deep into Laos. We are up early to decide whether to catch the renowned-to-be-over crowded Louang Phabang longboat trip, or to try something a little less orthodox. We go for the latter, catching a sawngthaew to the bus station. Here we catch a minibus heading North East to Loang Namtha - This will be our first experience of Laos public transport. At 9am, the white Toyota (blue and red go-faster stripes) chugged earnestly out of the ... read more
