2023_Blog 18_Japan April 7 Port of Call: Osaka, Japan (Day 1) – Weather: 66°F/19°C – Heavy rain - Wind: 6.9 mph. We docked in Osaka today and will remain in port until 4:00 pm tomorrow giving guests the opportunity to enjoy full day excursions and some of Osaka’s night life. Once again rain poured down on us and we are beginning to think that we are no longer human but are transforming into waterfowl with webbed feet. Today was dedicated to touring religious sites: two Buddhist Temples and one Shinto Shrine. Our first stop was at Horyuji Temple noted for having some of the world’s oldest surviving wooden structures. The temple buildings have existed for more than 1,300 years. In 1993, since the temple was a unique center for Buddhist culture, UNESCO recognized it as part ... read more

2023_Blog 19_Japan April 8 Port of Call: Osaka, Japan (Day 2) – Partly cloudy in the morning – sunny in the afternoon – Wind: 13 mph. This morning no one was permitted to go ashore until the ship was cleared by Japanese Quarantine Officials. The ship’s doctor had reported three cases of COVID-19 aboard and an inspection had to be conducted. As the officials were not available until 8:00 am no one, including those on shore excursions, could leave the ship while the officials conducted their inspection. As our departure from Osaka is scheduled for 4:00 pm this afternoon the excursions were noticeably shortened. Our outing this morning consisted of a two-hour drive around the city where the tour guide pointed out both historical and contemporary architecture. A brief rest stop was provided near the castle ... read more

2023_Blog 15_Japan April 4 Port of Call: Kagoshima, Japan – Weather: 69°F/21°C – Overcast skies – Wind 14 mph. After enjoying a sea day, we returned to the Japanese Islands and docked at Kagoshima today across the harbor from an active volcano. Smoke was viewed emerging from the volcano, which had a substantial eruption just two weeks before we arrived. Today we had another marathon shore excursion experience beginning with a drive down the Satsuma Peninsula. Our first stop was at the Sengan-en Garden also known as the Iso Garden. Once the home of the local samurai lord the site has been restored. Many historical sites in Japan had been destroyed during the nation’s multiple civil wars and during the period when Japan adopted Western industrial and political ideas during the late 19th Centu... read more

2023_Blog 16_Japan April 5 Port of Call: Aburatsu, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan – Weather: 63°F/17°C – Intermittent light rain – Wind 18.5 mph. Today’s excursion took us first to Udo Jingu Shrine and then to Obi Castle. The brochure description of the access to the shrine made it sound as though one had to walk on a narrow rocky ledge along the seashore and navigate oneself into a tight cave. The reality was quite different. Though there were many steps to climb, I counted over 200, the path was wide, with gravel sections and pavement, and well-marked. The shrine was tucked into a cave, but the cave itself was spacious and accommodated the shrine and several other small structures. Due to the excessive number of steps B opted to stay behind in the parking lot area and ... read more

Blog 11_Japan_2023 March 31 Port of Call: Ishigaki Island, Japan – Weather: Overcast skies – Temperature: 70°F/21°C – Wind 10 mph Second stop on our way to Taiwan was at the Island of Ishigaki. Our shore excursion experience, Highlights of Ishigaki, never came about as it was sold out early and our waitlisting never was fulfilled. We could have walked into town, about 40 to 50 minutes or taken a shuttle but that was a twenty-minute ride and from what other guests reported we made the right choice as it really was not worth the effort. So, we stayed on board and enjoyed another relaxing day. We have learned that due to the shortage of English-speaking tour guides not as many shore excursions were possible. The pandemic saw a large number of tour guides laid off ... read more

An overnight in Nagano worked well to break up the long passage south, delivering us immediately to spring with tiny smatterings of pink amidst mostly buds. Blossom was in waiting. Met with a warm 22C afternoon in Takayama, sadly, the cooler snow clothing was packed away seemingly for good. A massive increase in those also visiting this spot indicated how close to the big city tourism we were. Cars appeared to travel faster, souvenir shops were prolific, and local delicacies being sold everywhere. We chose carefully an afternoon wander that day, taking us to a grand ‘suite of mountains’ view (visible peaks over 3000m) and a slightly muddy ‘literature walk’ near the Hido no Sato village, ending at an Edo period shrine built in the early 1800s. Being dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the sentiment of maintaining ... read more

Blog 8_Japan_2023 March 28 Sea Day – Weather: Overcast skies, Wind – 20.3 mph; Temperature 59°F/15°C First day out of Yokohama on our way to Naha, Okinawa was spent relaxing, reading and attending lectures. HAL has brought on a retired Dentist who is has an expertise in Japanese history and culture as well as being a Master at Tai Chi. Today he gave two one-hour lectures on the history of Japan from its beginning to present time. A really condensed overview but totally worthwhile in orienting us to this land and its people. Still having some difficulties connecting to the internet but slowly resolving the problems with the assistance of the Front Office Staff. Tonight, we enjoyed dinner in the Pinnacle Grill. As part of our original booking, we were offered three complimentary dinners per cruise ... read more

Blog 10_Japan_2023 March 30 Port of Call: Naha, Okinawa, Japan – Weather: Occasional light rain – Wind 23 mph – Temperature: 72°F/22°C After two and a half sea days we arrived at the island of Okinawa where we enjoyed our first shore excursion of this voyage: a visit to Shurijo Castle Park, Shikinaen Royal Garden and finally, a visit to Kokusai Street, part of the shopping district. Shurijo Castle was constructed in the 14th century and displays distinctly Chinese and Japanese architectural influences. Heavily bombed during the 2nd World War the structure was left in ruins until 1992 when reconstruction started. The castle complex was recognized in 2000 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unfortunately, on October 31, 2019, eight of the main buildings were destroyed in a fire. Those struc... read more

Blog 3_Japan_2023 March 23 Weather – heavy fog blotted out our view of the harbour most of the day – intermittent rain throughout the day. – Temperature 15°C We slept well but our body clocks haven’t caught up with reality and got us up at 5:00 am though we did have a nap later in the day. The weather forecast predicted rain and it certainly lived up to that. After breakfast we went out for a walk around the hotel precinct which is situated near several large parks, museums, and local attractions. Part of the area was used for some of the 2020 Olympics. The rain was light at first but after an hour it was strong enough to soak us through, so we had to return to the hotel to dry off. After lunch the ... read more

Blog 4_Japan_2023 March 24 Weather – the fog & storm clouds have parted giving us a partly sunny morning: Forecast is an 80% chance of rain: Temperature high of 21°C. Our body clocks seem to be re-adjusting and as a result we had a relaxing sleep even though we awoke early again this morning. Today we decided to tackle the overhead train and subway system and head off to the inner regions of Tokyo. There is a station for the overhead train system connected to the hotel so that part was easy; the bigger challenge came with the transfer at the final station on this line to one of the multiple branches of the Tokyo subway. Our destination was Asakusa Temple and grounds. This is one of Tokyo’s oldest and most colourful Buddhist Temple, dating back ... read more
