The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua. To be updated

A Quick Guide to Bali Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Bali’s idyllic location, constant warm temperature and welcoming people have made it a key destination for travellers from all over the world. Where is it? Bali is one of the Indonesian islands, set in the Indian Ocean, just 8 degrees south of the equator. It is popular for romantic breaks, honeymoons and weddings as well as being a key surfing destination. Where can I stay? Bali is a haven of warm climates, blue seas and wide sandy beaches. There are big hotels in Bali just as there are in any beach-led country, but the very best hotels are those that reduce [View Full Entry]

More on Ubud, Bali Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Paul’s Thoughts on Ubud, Bali, Indonesia Ubud is just like Asheville. Sometimes sitting in a restaurant in Ubud is just like sitting in a restaurant in Asheville. Same food - huge, delicious organic salads, burritos, veggie burgers, mixed veggie bowls with rice and tahini sauce. Lots of tofu. Same food as health foody Asheville. Then there are the same folks sitting around us. In Malaysia we saw one couple from the US during the whole month. (That’s the truth, not an exaggeration.) Here people from the US are everywhere, and they’re the same sorts of [View Full Entry]

Ubud Bali Indonesia WOW! Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Well after having spent a few days here I am starting to get the reason why people love it here. The people are very nice and will always welcome you with a smile and a Hello. I really am happy with my move to the second hotel Ubud Terrace as it puts me much nearer everything. It so clean and quiet. The garden is beautiful and well maintained. I go into my room in the afternoon and they have place flowers everywhere, the steps, the sink, the nightstand, the light fixtures unbelievable. They wear flowers in their hair Men and women, [View Full Entry]

(Day 565 on the road) So here it is, my last blog entry about Southeast Asia after travelling across the entire region (plus a few other "nearby" countries) for the last 18 months or so. On the way back to Bali from Lombok I had met adventurous and ever-smiling Suzanne from Holland, and the next two days we were to explore central Bali together on a rented motorbike. My last stay in Kuta on Bali hadn't been the most wonderful experience for me, but I had heard good things about Ubud and its surrounding and was [View Full Entry]

After I had finished my stint at Mt. Kerinci, I moved on via yet another horrible overnight bus experience to the town of Bukittinggi eight hours north. Bukittinggi is a popular place for tourists to visit and all the cheaper hotels seemed to be full, although it turned out that wasn’t due to tourists but to the recent earthquake having destroyed all the hotels in Padang so all the local travellers had to come here instead. I arrived at 6am and after finding a hotel with a room (the Hotel Asia, because I’m in Asia of course) and getting some sleep [View Full Entry]

We have only seen it in photos. Yet we were not prepared for it. We were not discouraged that one of my friends suffered a leg problem on our first day in Yogyakarta and had to drag her leg while clocking it around the temple as locals do. But it certainly helped that we were with very competent local guides Bellong and Yantong who made sure their Ibu (mother in Bahasa Indonesia) did not miss this highlight of our trip. Awesome Borobudur This 9th century Buddhist temple is enough reason to make this trip to Yogyakarta. Or for that matter, to [View Full Entry]

It wasn’t much fun getting from Way Kambas National Park in the south of Sumatra to Kerinci-Seblat National Park in the middle. I had been planning on taking a ten hour train ride from Bandar Lampung to Palembang then another ten hour train ride to Lubuklinggau followed by a ten hour bus ride to Sungai Penuh and finally a one hour bus ride to the final destination of Kersik Tuo, but from one of the film crew from Indonesian TV station Trans7 who were staying at Way Kanan I learned that there is an overnight bus from Bandar Lampung to Bangko [View Full Entry]

Bali - October 2009 Asia » Indonesia
Even if our arrival in Singapore was delayed by 2 days (due to a technical problem on the A380 we had to turn back after flying for 3 hours, quite scary!), we still managed to find a flat and arrange all the paperwork on time so we could enjoy a short week in Bali before Jerome's first day at Tyco Asia. We rented a very old 4x4 for the week and travelled around the island. It is not very big but we got lost a thousand times! On an island where there are no trafic rules we also managed to get [View Full Entry]

Day 12 Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Lovina
Day 12 Lovina Beach We basically did nothing all day except lay around and drink beer. I read and Peter went to the pool where he chatted with some Aussies and met an older Canadian man traveling alone. We noticed a lot of people traveling alone here. One lady summed it up. It’s safe. She told me she is divorced her kids are grown and she feels comfortable going to Bali by herself because of this. I have to agree. I saw no threats or reason for anyone to be afraid of the area. Just the drivers! The staff at the [View Full Entry]

Selamat Siang! Im 2 months into my Jakarta-work-adventure and Im starting to feel like it's all rather normal! I guess it means that I am settling in! ;) Not THAT much has happened since my last blog, but last weekend's events made me decide to share some more pictures with you! From 16-10 until 18-10 I left the island of Java to climb Gunung Agung, the highest volcano in Bali, measuring 3100m at its true peak. Most people, both local and tourists, summit the mountain at 2900m on a more convenient side of the crater. But my hiking group of choice [View Full Entry]
