The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua. To be updated

The child has a name Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
So we would start a small boutique hotel in Ubud. Then the child needed to have a name. A lot of the small hotels or guesthouses in Bali are called “ Villa So-and-So” where “So-and-So” has to be replaced by some exotic name. “Villa Hibiscus”, “Villa Cempaka”, “Villa Mahayani”, … So we could hardly call our little paradise “Misty Cliffs” or “Summer Willows”. We needed something oriental and a tad mysterious. frangipani tree We have two, one hundred and f [View Full Entry]

Day 7 Jimburan Bay Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Day 7 Scooter estimate and Jimbaran Bay Peter and I got an estimate to have the scooter fixed today. We took off early from the hotel, so we could make the most of the day. The front desk gave use the name and directions to an authorized Honda repair shop. Understanding the directions and trying to find the place was an adventure all in it self. We drove a lot further than the directions said but we found the repair place. It was a busy little shop, but one of the guys came out right away and took a look at [View Full Entry]

Grace and an enamel bowl. A woman walks past in the street below. Her flip flopped feet pat in time to the ebb of the ocean behind her. It is early morning and the sea shimmers behind her like fish scales in the sun. Her traditional Indonesian sarong hugs her slender frame. She is elegant and regal, despite her poverty. The woman balances an enormous enamel bowl lightly on her head. A huge fish, curved like a boomerang spills over the edges, its head and tail flopping in time to her pit patting flip flops. Its black skin shines in the [View Full Entry]

Today is the last day of Ramadan. Tonight the island folk will eat a celebratory dinner with their families and tomorrow they will go to Mosque and pray. And then it will all be over. The month of exercising one’s will power and following an age old tradition. Weaving simple friendships… I stopped to say hello to a man this morning who was weaving little baskets. I asked what they were for. “Rice” he answered. “Is it from the coconut tree” I queried. He nodded. “Coconoot,” he confirmed. I asked if he could teach me to make one. N [View Full Entry]

Hay you!

A civilization lost. Yesterday I watched a storm brewing, and rain pouring down over Lombok. Slowly it moved over to Gili Meno and then towards us. Watching it, we packed up our stuff and moved to a little beach hut to carry on playing cards. Then the rain belted down. We walked home. It felt good to be washed wet with fresh water. What a luxury it is. How spoilt we are, us rich westerners with all our creature comforts. So wealthy we’ve forgotten how to walk in the rain. How to call water “sweet” and long for its embrace. I won’t be much off the mark if I rank Bali to be the first amongst equals of the 17508 islands that add up to make Indonesia. It’s a long country. Tip to tip the distance is almost the same as going from London to Moscow. Blue waters, green forests, black volcanic ash, red fertile soil, fiery Balinese cuisine and warm people makes Bali a great destination. Whilst Indonesia is an Islamic country with over 90% of its population following Islam, Bali is just the opposite. More than 90% of its 3 million population are Hindus. Since I am a Hindu [View Full Entry]

Yes, it's us again - this blog is still trundling, relentlessly on. Our trip ended over 4 months ago now, but James is more determined than ever to bring this story to its proper conclusion - even if no-one's reading anymore! The show must go on...... Returning to Labuanbajo, port town on the Western Coast of Flores, Indonesia, we were utterly exhausted after our epic journey to the volcanic lakes at Kelitmutu. Our dilapidated transport spluttered into town just as night was falling, and we splashed out on a hotel room with hot, running water (providing the first proper shower in [View Full Entry]

Day 6 The Crash  Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Uluwatu
Day 6 Oct 6th The crash Well I might as well just get it out of the way. Today wasn’t great. We had a terrible crash on the scooter and Peter was left with significant road rash. It could have been a lot worse. At dinner tonight we agreed to the fact that if there was on coming traffic we would have become Balinese road kill. We were about 30 minutes into our trip to Uluwatu Temple. The roads to this village are narrow and windy in most spots. The area offers such an amazing flavor of the Balinese culture. Day 4 Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua
Day 4 Today is our first full day at Nusa Dua. We opted for the breakfast buffet at the resort. We felt it was pricey at about $7.50 pp. We have been used to a deluxe complementary breakfast being brought to our room for the last few days. I guess we have gotten spoiled. The menu options are a lot different also. The Balinese eat a “porrege” for breakfast that looks a lot like a thick rice soup. It is tasteless, white and they offer choices you can add in to your taste. The add ins are things such as cilantro, [View Full Entry]
