The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua. To be updated

Saturday, 14th November 2009 The Bintan trip was never part of our travel forecast for 2009. Ideas flew by during one of the nights in Halong Bay. Since none of us had left our footprints on the island, we decided to give it a go. 1 month later, we were on the island. Slight changes were made to the travel line up as SS was seconded to Shanghai for her business trip and Mapletree was simply caught up with her commitments at work. 4 of us arrived at the relatively "Ulu" Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal on the afternoon of 14th November [View Full Entry]

I have travelled to Bali many times and have sponsored a family there for 30 years! After reading Elizabeth Gilberts book Eat Pray Love, I wanted to meet with Ketut Liyer, the 9th generation Healer and Medicine man she wrote about in the book. I emailed Elizabeth and she gave me some details of how to find him but also asked me to visit Yayasan Bumi Sehat. (www.bumisehatbali.org). This is a birthing centre that has been set up in Ubud by volunteers to help local women deliver their babies to try and reduce the number of deaths in childbirth. They have [View Full Entry]

Hello all, sorry it's been ages since my last travel update, just one of those stereotypical "having too much fun doing a whole lot of nothing" excuses. But now upon reflection I there has been much to discuss, so let's get to it! When last we left our crew was spliting up for a bit to have some time to chill apart. When you travel with the same people day after day every minute together you see you need a bit of space, so this was ours. I flew to Bali home of the legendary surf and met up with Marlise [View Full Entry]

Monty is about to trade me in if I don’t stop snapping photos, but this first part of Bali has been so breathtaking, my eye might as well be super-glued to my camera for convenience. And, I’m a Smith.. I’m pretty sure, it’s in my genetic makeup, right family?! We arrived in Bali on November 7th completely out of fuel. Requiring us at the airport before 4 am in Bangkok after a night on Koh San was a task that only an all-nighter seemed right for. Sleeping on the plane saved us a bit, but we were pretty exhausted to say [View Full Entry]

Nha Trang and so on... Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
Ok.

Bali 6th November 2009 Having 'done' Myanmar David decided to look at where AirAsia fly to from Bangkok. Bali came up as ridiculously cheap so we just had to go. Added to which Ann wanted to be somewhere exotic for her 60th so Bali seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Overnighted at the very comfortable, if strangely named, Great Residency airport hotel at Bangkok we arrived in Bali to yet another hot and steamy country. As we had no Indonesian cash, we made for a set of ATM's in the arrivals lounge. To our horror the one we chose took [View Full Entry]

Eerste week  Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Banda Aceh

So, we left Japan after a quick day of fish and sightseeing and were off on the longest travel days. We flew from Tokyo, Japan to Hanoi, Vietnam. We arrived in Hanoi at about 10:30pm local time and not having Visa's we were planning on spending the night in the airport. After about and hour and a half of negotiating with the immigration officer on duty, we were allowed to stay in the airport overnight until our 9:30am flight left for Kalua Lumpur, Malaysia. That flight landed at the most chaotic airport of all time with about 16 flight gates in [View Full Entry]

When I first arrived in Indonesia there were little signs on all the tables in Balinese restaurants that just said "L.A. Lights". I had no idea what they were advertising. It was about two weeks before I realized they were a type of cigarette. Every single male over the age of six months smokes in Indonesia, and there are cigarette advertisements everywhere, although interestingly all of them also have the health warnings in smaller print along the bottom. I find many of them very amusing (especially as few seem to have anything to do with smoking), so spent some time in [View Full Entry]
