… After our delay at the HQ we eventually arrived in Ketambe at 10:30 - somewhat later than we'd planned. Still, even with the later start, we managed to sort out our permits, organise a guide and get into the jungle by 11. After a few steps into the dense medley of thick vegetation it was as if the jungle had swallowed us, instantly blocking the road and all other signs of the small town from view. Rolley, our guide, lead us along the muddy paths deeper and deeper into the jungle, all the time encouraging us to be as quiet as we can. After about an hour of cautious walking Rolley stopped and gazed into the tree tops about 30m above us and told us to wait right where we were. He wanted to check ... read more

The road that seemed to be lost in the tall maize fields would suddenly open up to vast expanses of brilliant green rice fields, the water reflecting the mountains and clouds surrounding them. Then, mingled amoungst the rice fields, small villages with satellite dishes on all the houses would spring up and as quickly disappear back into the thick farms. Once through the farmlands, the road wound back up and over jungle covered mountains again. Our chariot was a rickety minivan with tape along the windows, roof upholstery bouncing against the tin can exterior with all the bumps and potholes in the road. In the corners of the van, small blue strobe lights flashed to the beat of the music, the melody completely drowned out by the thud thud of the sub-woofer. So, although we've technically ... read more

Horray for Air Asia! Our second attempt at catching an evening flight into Jakarta airport, and once again we were delayed until a 1am take-off. After a 2am arrival, with our transfer flight taking off at 7am, we were once again looking for a place to spend the night at the airport. Having learned that there's nowhere to sleep outside, we stretched out on a row of seats in the baggage claim hall. An hour later we were woken by a security guard telling us that arrivals closes at 3am, we need to be out. Groggily we dragged our bags over to the departures hall. Guess what, it only opens at 4am. An hour outside, then an hour inside, because check-in only opens at 5am, and and hour later, the security check opens at 6am! Sheesh! ... read more

The smell of the third world hits me as soon as we exit the immigrasi at Batam; that unmistakable smell of burning rubbish mixed with low-grade exhaust fumes and other exotic smells that just didn't exist back across the Straits. Singapore is probably the most immaculate city and country in the world, Indonesia is, well very different. We change money and enter the scrum of shouting Ojek drivers (an Ojek is motorbike taxi, how they think they can help us when we already have 2 wheels of our own is something I don't bother to stop and discuss) and food vendors, the road outside is a circus of food and market stalls as today is the day the big Pelni ship comes to town (well small village with a jetty really). We ride into the huge ... read more

The Feeding Centre Luckily for me the river was a tad lower the following day so I was able to visit the feeding platform where the Orangs are fed twice a day. Getting there firstly involved navigating this cheeky river crossing followed by a 15 min walk to the feeding platform. However it took a while longer for us as Mina was on the rampage again and we had to leg it back down the path. I video'd this bit but when I watched it back it was a bit like 'The Cook Report' with lots of shots of the ground and people running....whilst we were running from an angry primate it wasn't one who had just been rumbled for selling dodgey gear or not doing a good job of tarmacking people's drives, it was ... read more

Sumatra.... 'Why Sumatra?', I hear you ask. And no it's nothing to do with a book of 'those' positions - that's the Karma Sutra you bunch of pervs. Well ,the real reason is that after watching the late Steve Irwin do a documentary with the Orangutans in Borneo I thought that maybe by visiting them, all my questions about being ginger could be answered by these 'men of the forest'. Plus in return I could share with them the hardships of being the only ginger in the class when growing up in 1970s Gloucestershire. Thus paving the way for some primate - homo sapien bonding, making the world a better place. Hmmm maybe. But anyway before this, I had to get thro Medan..... Getting there.... First impressions of Medan weren't good. Well it was cool ... read more

I start thinking it's going to be a long taxi journey from Medan to Ketambe when the kid in the seat behind me pukes before we even get to the end of the road. It's 8 hours on what is known as the 'vomit route' over pot holes, the locals chain smoking and listening to Indonesian pop music full blast. Indonesian pop music is generally crap English music speeded up x10, with a thumping beat in the background and sung by the smurfs on helium. I try to survive the journey by remaining unconscious and sleeping as much as possible. But I am awoken several times by the Indonesian girl behind me who keeps tapping me on the shoulder when she needs a new plastic bag for her/her daughter/her son to puke into. We arrive into ... read more

We left BL for Lake Toba, we caught a mini van and this should of seated 12 people including the driver but instead we had 16 people crammed in, it was so uncomfortable! we sat next to 2 young local girls, one spoke good english which was good for us later on, we had to stop at the top of the mountain(1982m) as there was a rock fall the road, it was cleared after a while and the bus driver went crazy down the windy roads, overtaking lorries, and the road wasnt that wide, i was glad when we got to the bottom. We arrived as it was getting dark in a place called Pangururan which was onthe other side to Lake Toba, not where we had planned! So the girl next to us asked the ... read more

We left Medan in the morning for BL for some jungle action, we caught a local bus, this bus was funny, again it should of been scrap but it got us there, we even had chickens on the bus. The heavens opened when we arrived, walked to our guesthouse(bungalows) called Garden Inn, and it was lovely, bunaglows made of wood, quite open around the edges (always makes me nervous)massive rooms with our own balcony overlooking the river and lush jungle. In the morning we see our first Oran-utan, 2 of them walking along the river to the feeding platform, it was amasing, just a great feeling to see them in the wild when you only hear and see them on the TV, they are bigger than we expected but just as handsome and they look so ... read more

We took the high speed ferry from Penang across to Sumarta, it should of taken 4hrs but 6hrs later and lots of very ill people we arrived, the sea was really rocky, one minute you can see just the sky to one side of the boat then just the waves. We caught a mini van to the Capital City of Medan, now these mini vans are something else, they would be scrap in the UK, there is more filler than body work, most have spoilers onthe back, Bob Marley painted all over them and no doors. But we arrived eventually, again this should of taken 1hr but 2.5hrs later we arrived at our hotel. It was a very long day, took around 13hrs all in all, from when we left the Hotel in Penang to the ... read more
