August 20 2014 Our adventure began with an ungodly rising time of 4.30am only to find when we arrived at Tullamarine that our flight was delayed, finally taking off at 10am. Garuda is a great airline, service was good and we arrived at Denpasar only 15 mins behind schedule. After clearing Immigration and Customs it was touch and go catching our onward flight to Jakarta. In Australia when a flight is listed on the board as "boarding" it usually means check-in has closed, not so in Indonesia :) On arrival in Jakarta we immediately became millionaires at the Money Exchange! Onward to our hotel Mercure Ancol (pronounced anchol) for a feed and sleep. August 21 2014 Bummed around Jakarta, re-experiencing my first Asian toilet since Thailand lol. Checked out of hotel at midnight for the 2am ... read more

August 18 2014 "All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go............. I'm leaving on a jetplane" HaHa hope I don't have that song rattling around in my brain now! It was written by John Denver and recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1967, becoming one of their greatest hits. So... only 2 sleeps to go, my bags ARE packed, in Karen's teeny excess New York luggage, and I'm ready to go Sriwijaya Air. I hope it's just a glitch that I seem to be unable to retrieve our E-tickets for Jakarta-Ternate *shakes fist*. Luckily we have them printed out so if it's just a computer glitch then we are OK. If not and the flight has been changed then I await an email in trepidation as our hotels have been booked for corresponding dates. ... read more

August 12 2014 As time for our expedition is getting closer it seems appropriate to post some more history of RAAF Airfield Construction Squadron 14. By April 1943 No. 61 Wing had several airfield construction squadrons under its command in the Darwin area. All of the wing's units arrived at Darwin by July 1943, though No. 1 Mobile Works Squadron was redeployed to Victoria shortly afterwards as it had completed twelve months service in the tropics. Before departing th... read more

August 10 2014 Wow, only 10 days to go, where did the last few weeks go? After eyeballing my suitcase in the wardrobe since my last blog post, I had a thought one night whilst in bed, as you do, that my suitcase is rather large. Considering we will be travelling by public boats, which are not cruise liners lol, from Ternate to Halmahera and Morotai, I've come to the conclusion that I need a much smaller suitcase. Thanks be to youngest daughter for her much smaller suitcase which she purchased in New York, to contain excess baggage on the flight home! Now I just need to do a rehearsal pack to make sure it will be big enough. I'm hoping Rob will have a smallish case as well, from memory of our previous trips to ... read more

July 30 2014 Well...the last few days have been just a tad stressful. On Friday evening an email from Garuda Air (our airline from Melbourne to Jakarta) appeared in my inbox letting me know that our flight departure date has been changed from Wednesday 20th to Thursday 21st. Panic stations for a bit as I'm fairly sure Rob has already booked his flight from Mildura for Tuesday 19th and he is currently out of mobile range in Thailand. Taking calming breaths I decided not to panic and to check on Garuda's website to see what was happening. Seems they have changed our direct flight to the Thursday but there are still flights going via Denpassar on Wednesday, which just means having to haul our bags off at Denpassar, check through customs and reboard the flight from ... read more

I didn't even dream or hope to visit this place in my lifetime. It was never in my wish list. First of all, I had no idea where it was and second, I'd rather visit other interesting places in Indonesia first such as Wakatobi or Toraja. Unfortunately, I had a soft spot for traveling, so when my friend Ella asked me to join her with a group of photographers to Ternate, I could not resist. Little that I knew it was a hassle to go there. Ternate is part of North Maluku province. It was the center of the powerful former Sultan Ternate (to this date, the current Sultan still resides in Ternate and has his palace there). Ternate is known as the Spice Island for centuries which was the sole reason that brought the Portuguese ... read more
