A Soft Landing in Indonesia It has been a while since I have traveled for a prolonged period of time, so I thought a soft landing into Indonesia would help me ease in, as past experience has taught me that independent travel in Indonesia requires patience and a sense of humor. My flight into Bali landed at 3.30pm on July 30, and I was booked to fly to Labuanbajo the next morning. I chose a hotel near the airport offering a free transfer. It turned out to be a good choice as I did not clear immigration and customs until well past 5pm. I arrived at The Radiant Hotel and Spa around sunset and elected to eat at the hotel restaurant (rare for me), chill in the pool and have a good sleep. I can't praise ... read more

Labuan Bajo is a harbour town which the Lonely Planet describes as gorgeous but ramshackled - erm, well, I'm not sure our expectations were very well managed! Walking into the town on our first evening (in the rain!) was definitely a low point of our trip. As we turned onto the main drag we were greeted with traffic speeding by, horns beeping and the lovely smell of diesel. There was no footpath so it was a case of walking single file on the side of the road and hoping the scouters didn't clip you as they whisked past. It was a far cry from meandering down the sandy paths on Gili Air, where there are no motorised vehicles, just push bikes and the odd horse. We found refuge in the first half decent restaurant we saw ... read more

A spontaneous trip that came together very quickly (planned and organised the week we left for the USA in November). Primary trip purpose- to take my parents (75 and 77) to see the Komodo dragons. They spend December/January in Bali every year so I flew to Denpasar from Perth with Jetstar. Not a cheap flight at the last minute and in the Australian school hols, but, there you go... AUD $560- eeek, so used to the specials that you can pick up in advance (going to Bali in March and that's about what we are paying for 2 people). Uneventful trip on a full plane. Scored a good forward window seat by sheer luck I think. Arrival was ultra smooth- no other planes and I tested out my new British passport in order to avoid paying ... read more

Flores stole a piece of my heart. This gem of natural beauty and human warmth is a joy to experience and a sonnet for the eyes. Coral rich waters peppered with tropical islands border interknitted wooded hills. As tropical and temperate meet, volcanic peaks rise into the clouds. Lowlands nuture rice, trees stand heavy with bananas, coconuts and papaya and flowers decorate the green. It is an island to explore; winding bends of never straight roads lead the venturer past breathtaking views before snaking down through valley villages and up and over again to new horizons. The beauty of Flores lives and breathes in its people. Catholic and Muslim residing side by side, their peaceful nature, warm hearts and genuine character shines through. Every man, woman and child I pass wishes me 'good morning miss', 'hello ... read more

Well, I’m sitting here on my last night in Flores, as a huge blood-red sun slowly dips behind a distant volcano that billows clouds of smoke and scores of gorgeous tropical islands slowly disappear into the night. Admittedly it’s been a rather short holiday, but a truly wonderful one none the less… After a brief stopover in Bali (which literally consisted of a plate of mee goreng, a couple of cold beers, a few hours of sleep and a rather bleary-eyed watching of the World Cup with an Estonian deckhand and a chain-smoking Balinese security guard) I boarded a small plane for the trip to Flores. Named Capa de Flores, or Cape of Flowers, by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, Flores is a gorgeously verdant little strip of land, a few islands to the east ... read more

After spending the first leg of my journey on the brash, glitzy and flamboyant island of Bali, I made my way east to the neighbouring island of Lombok. Though separated only by an hour long boat ride away (or if you're cheap like me and instead opted for the 5 hour slow boat), Lombok has a distinctly different feel, culture and attitude in comparison to Bali. Yes, it is also a Mecca for surfers, but if Bali is Veronica, Lombok would be Betty. Cute, quiet and unnecessarily overlooked in the shadow of Bali which in my opinion is more style than substance. My travel buddy Patrick and I made our way to the town of Kuta (not to be confused with the party town in Bali) which consists largely of one main street lined with small ... read more
