Getting back to Bali involved yet another boat/bus combination.....hopefully the last for a while! We were efficiently picked up in Sengiggi, then dropped at the port for the usual chaos to ensue. The Bali end was particularly interesting with drivers fighting amongst themselves to decide who took who where, but eventually and in a great deal of pain we arrived in Ubud. As we mentioned we had to spend a good bit of time walking around hunting for accomodation, usually not too bad but with our legs of pain and Ubud's enjoyment of uneven pavements and steps, it was hard work. We took a basic bungalow room for one night and vowed to go hunting for a place with a pool the next day without our bags! We spent the rest of the day walking around, ... read more

Geo: -8.51927, 115.263Sooner or later it had to happen. Probably picked up some bacteria colony with last night's dinner. The stomach cramps started at 2AM, traveler's diarrhea. Around here also nicknamed "Bali Belly".Luckily i had the right pills with me. But the cramps still return from time to time. Got picked up by my driver in the morning and we headed straight to Ubud. First to the Monkey Forest Sanctuary, with free-range monkey rowdy's. Later i strolled through the lovely town with its endless art and crafts shops. From there we went to the famous rice terraces where we stopped for a scenic lunch.Next stop Kintamani Volcano in the north of Bali. It was surprisingly cool up there at the viewpoint. But the clouds prevented any good picture-taking. Drove back south to another temple visit. Before ... read more

OFF AGAIN Yes we’re back folks. After two long flights (yet again I failed to get a wink of sleep) and a brief stop-over in Kuala Lumpur, then another flight, we finally arrived in Bali. Phew! KUTA This is the main beach town in Bali. It’s overdeveloped, loud, brash and is known as the Aussie version of Magaluf. We opted for just two nights here (at the very nice Tanaya hotel) so we could chill out and rest our heads. Kuta has one of the best beaches in Bali - miles of golden sand (although I have seen many better beaches) and no crowds. Unless you count the numerous hawkers peddling their wares – massage sir? Ice cream sir? Crossbow sir? (who the hell wants to buy a full size crossbow on a beach?!?). They do ... read more

Hier in Bali ... read more

Riesiege ... read more

After only a few weeks away from North America, I have quickly had to adapt to a number of things. Cold water showers, mandi's (squat toilets) and standing out like a sore thumb to name just a few. I knew it would be different and I knew I was going to have to adjust, what I didn't know is just how different it is. My biggest barrier has been language. It's really quite crazy how quickly you pick up a language simply from lack of any other option. Tyler and I have by no means become fluent in Indonesian but we have certainly learned a lot in a short amount of time. The food words were the first things we wanted to know... when there aren't pictures on a menu it's kind of a crap shoot ... read more

Bali is already very different from Java. Java is mainly Muslim while Bali is mostly Hindu. As soon as we got off the ferry we could feel that it is much less conservative. Almost every single house has it's own temple/shrine and there are “offerings” all over the place. People will put the “offerings” at the end of their driveway, on their motorcycles, in front of their shops etc. Many people have tattoo's, some actually wear shorts, but there are also a lot of traditionally dressed Balinese people around. The older people are generally the ones to wear the traditional clothing (consisting batik sarongs; the women sometimes have long lace tops on with belts wrapped around their hips, the men usually have a traditional headdress that we unfortunately don't know the proper word for) but it ... read more
