We arrived in Ubud, our last destination in Bali, Indonesia, after a couple of hours on the bus with Perama. We choose to travel with them as we get discount (only 10%) when buying new tickets and showing the old ones. Matt and Krys advised us to look at the Temple area for a room as it was nice and a bit like Eat-Pray-Love (EPL). So we ended-up at Dewi Antara - managed by Kadek and his family. Locals live with their family and they take care of each other. We met the grandmas, the parents, his wife and baby. All the houses have a temple oriented south and by the entrance of the house to protect the inhabitants from devils and outsiders. The room for the elderly is located north when kitchen and outdoor dining ... read more

An early and very quiet morning- no school today! Lots of white bellied swiftlets flying around out the back verandah, some egrets and the ubiquitous dove (I bet they live in EVERY country of the world). A nice coolness in the air before the sun comes up. We decide to spend the morning walking the rice fields- me with my Nike Ipod (clocking up the km's) and Geoff with his new binocs spotting birds. We find the way in and head off in the same direction but at markedly different speeds. It is very peaceful out there on your own with just the occasional farmer. It gets even more peaceful, it's then I realise I have taken the wrong turn and end up at the back road - the signs in the rice fields for Ubud ... read more

Another day, another tour. This morning we are being picked up by Wayan from Jegeg Bali Cycling Tours. Read about them on Trip Advisor and though they sounded good. I had done a bike tour about 6 years ago with Bali Baik Bike when they first started and thoroughly enjoyed it, buy Jegeg have smaller groups - maximum of 7 or 8 which was appealing. It cost Rp 350 000 each and was to run from 0800 till around 3.30pm. http://www.jegegbalicycling.com/ Pickup was on time. There was one other couple on the trip with us- Lesley and Chris from Edinburgh. Wayan greeted us and the intro's all got done. Wayan's family all have key roles in the company and are keen to make a positive impact on your trip to Bali. He is one of 7 ... read more

So, up bright and early at 0630, there is a cool breeze and lots of bird activity. There is a school a few houses in front of the hotel and the kids are having a great time. Lots of chattering and laughter floating up to the 3rd floor. It then goes completely silent and a young boy leads a sing song chanting prayer, then silence, then it descends quickly back into play time. We sit on our balcony surveying the scene and wait for our pineapple pancake. Today is the day to do the Bali Bird Walk. We had done this a few years ago and really enjoyed it so decided to do it again. Booked pre-departure through the website. http://www.balibirdwalk.com/ The walks were started over 15 years ago by Victor Mason, birder and author/illustrator. He ... read more

Quick trip; Perth to Bali- 3 1/2 hours with Air Asia. Denpasar Airport to Ubud 2 1/2 hours with Ubud Taxi. Bali has become so busy in the last few years, the airport more chaotic, the carpark and roads out of it are virtually gridocked. However, when you get to where ever you are going, ahhhh. It is good to be back. This trip we headed up to Ubud. I wanted something a bit different, a bit more basic and closer to the activities that we had lined up. We booked 3 nights at the Narasoma Homestay (It also has an attached Yoga Retreat). It was well reviewed, well located and pretty cheap at $42/night (inc tax, breakfast and wifi) so I pre-booked 3 nights. The journey up there was in darkness but is interesting all ... read more

Kuala Lumpur (KL) Malaysia We flew from Saigon to Malaysia and caught the bus into Kuala Lumpur Central Station. We drove through multiple motorway tollgates and past housing areas, rows and rows of identical attached houses, then a gap and another area of rows and rows of the same, same but different identical houses. Then as we got closer to KL the housing changed to apartment buildings, the side of the buildings littered with laundry drying in the heat, 20 stories high. I wonder how many times the security guard walking the parameter gets a pair of undies falling on his head! I had been getting a bit nostalgic about India and wondering if this trip was going to be such an adventure without an experience that would ever match the one we had in India. ... read more

All the books praise Ubud a lot, so we thought we should see the capital of Balinese culture, art and entertainment. We booked a hotel in a hurry the evening before arrival; it was far out of town, but they provided a shuttle service to town and there was a nice pool. It was a strange place… it needed a bit of maintenance but it had something charming and for some kind of reason we got a royal suite, so I did not complain ( for now!). Anyway, first day Ubud ended up being a day in the water: I (stef) spent the entire afternoon with Skye driving from one hospital to the next one; his hand got stuck earlier that morning in the Jacuzzi ( the whole that sucks air to create the bubbles) and ... read more

To say I was excited to visit Bali is an understatement! It was somewhere I had always wanted to visit (and no, not because I had read Eat, Pray Love)! However, its hard to talk about Bali without mentioning the terrorist attacks in 2002 and 2005. The bombings in Kuta in '05 resulted in 20 fatalities and many injuries and as a result of this and ongoing terrorism concerns, visitors to Indonesia are warned to avoid all but essential travel. We weren't too worried as we intended to avoid the tourist traps of Kuta and Legion and instead, headed into the town of Ubud in central Bali. We arrived late and had organised a pickup to bring us there. After a long drive, we arrived at our guesthouse and checked into a beautiful villa with engraved wooden ... read more

There seems to be 4 names in Bali - Wayan: first born, Kedek: 2nd, Neoman: 3rd and Ketut:4th. If yopu to continue having children, God knows why, you go back to Wayan. Lol. I'm living next door to Wayan the healer. She's very famous here. She's the lady that Wayan the healer in the Julia Roberts film was based on. You can imagine how the Americans eat that up. The other day just outside near the entrance she was holding this tourists head and he was knealing with his eyes closed in some hypnotic state. I started giggling. That image there that I've just painted for you is the done thing here. It's normal. It's ABnormal if you're a non believer.
