Bali It was only a couple of hours from Singapore to fly to Kuta, Bali. We were couchsurfing once again with an American guy called Tai who was living and working in Bali. He advised us to get a taxi to his place from the taxi counter prepay as we would be less likely to be ripped off by the taxi touts – ah here we go again... So he was correct of course as soon as we paid our $25 visa fee and proceeded out of the airport we were accosted by lots of Bali men asking us if we needed transport, “Very cheap mate, very cheap..” So having pre paid for our taxi (80,000Rp - £5.70) we were dropped off outside Tai’s place. There are hardly any road signs or numbers on houses so ... read more

2.3.2012 Bali – Indonesia Airport transfer to Cairns airport, got the flight to Darwin where we had a 5 hour wait before our flight to Bali. So we decided to go to the nearest hotel and have a dip in the pool and relax there until we had to check into our flight. Arrived in Bali and it was Chaos! There was hundreds of people surrounding the airport, trying to take people to their hotels. We got in an airport taxi and we think we were ripped off a little bit. Only by a few pounds. He kept going down narrow streets and felt like we were going round in circles. There doesn’t seem to be any driving standards and if there is no one takes any notice. Hundreds of scooters everywhere pulling out in front ... read more

Monday was my first full day in Bali. Man its hot. I felt really intimidated when I arrived here, the place was not as welcoming as other countries I've been to. Then again where is there an airport where you land and you do feel welcome? It certainly isn't London thats for sure. I was pretty tired when I arrived as I'd been travelling the full day but the next day I went out to have a look around. Kuta is essentially a resort town, big nightlife, shops full of tat all selling the same thing but get away from that and head to the beach and you'll soon know its well worth the trip. In the 2 hours I was walking around (getting lost mainly, looking for the beach) I had hard drugs stuffed into ... read more

Today we spent the morning around the hotel and in the pool. We have been blessed with sensational weather since we arrived and a morning swimming in the pool is a great way to prepare us for the afternoon walk. In the afternoon we headed into Kuta to have a good look around and walk the streets. We started off by walking along the beach again which is much easier than having to fight the traffic and pedestrians on the road. It’s also very pleasant and there are also a few stall holders along the way, all with the coldest drinks in Bali. The plan was to go to Poppies Lanes, two narrow streets that run from the beach to Jalan Legian, the main night club area. These two streets are full of shops and places ... read more

The flight into Bali was short and sweet as we arrived on a new continent. We paid for our visas, had our passports checked and then who knows what happened for the next 15 minutes after that....... We were asked so many times, can I carry your bag, where you going, you need a taxi, that the 15 minutes from leaving passport control now seems like a blur of fast moving objects around us. We decided that we were just going to 'wing it' when we arrived and didn't have any where booked to stay, we didn't even have a map or a guide book for help. So Matt haggled with one of the million taxi drivers to take us into Kuta, 50,000 Rupiah (Rp), £1 = 14,000Rp so around £3.50 and so off we went. ... read more

We had a great start to our holiday. The gods and wind were on our side today and we flew straight to Bali without having to stop for refuelling in Darwin. In the end we arrived about 2 hours earlier than expected. On arrival at Bali we cleared customs and of course, because we were so early our lift was not there. In the end we decided to get a cab to the hotel. It nearly broke the bank costing the grand sum of Rp50,000 or $5. We checked into the hotel and we got our ground floor room as requested which opens up into beautiful tropical gardens and the three pools. The gardens lead down to the pool area and then onto the beach with the boardwalk running along the beach to Kuta itself. It ... read more

We have just returned from another long weekend in paradise :) In fact it was really nice weather...about 30 degrees every day, some rain at night but none during the day, massive winds the first day but perfect blue skies for the last 4 days. We decided to try a different location and a different hotel... and we decided to upgrade a little as it was only 4 nights so we purchased a family suite at the Holiday Inn Tuban. And it was excellent! I really really enjoyed the hotel and found it the best i have stayed in on Bali. It was newish, clean and not too big. It didnt have the huge feel of the Jayakarta or the Dynasty or Melasti. I could say "meet you at the pool" and we would all be ... read more

It just occured to me that this trip resembles Julie Roberts Eat, Prey, Love minus Italy. Yes, I watched it but I won't admit to liking it. The flight from HK to Bali was only 5 hours. I'm glad we split up the travel time or it may have been a 17 hour flight from Canada.. Bali aiport is small and word to the wise when you get off the plane go directly to the visa on arrival to purchase your ticket. There is another area also called visa on arrival but that is customs. Not sure why they didn't just call it customs, Iguess that would be too easy. I can take anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours to get through the airport. Think of it as game of chance. If it happens you ... read more

Kuta - Day 2 The breakfast at Un's is really good. Try their banana pancakes and fruit salad. Indonesian coffee is very strong, even more so than Starbucks in my opinion and it has a great full bodied taste. The best thing about breakfast was that it was complimentary. So far the cocktails are a bust in bali - they don't really know how to make proper drinks. But I must say the frozen margaritas was pretty good at Un's but they give you less than an hour of booze. So we went off searching for some cheap local Tequila and Vodka and free poured it ourself. Both tasted nasty by itself but in the margarita it was pretty good. We decided to rent a scooter to explore the town - $5/day. It's been awhile since ... read more

Since I last wrote we have switched continents and definitely changed lifestyles. The last two weeks in Sydney were similar to the first one- rainy and cold. Much of it was spent planning for Asia, although I did get the chance to catch up with some old friends and teachers from when I studied abroad. It felt weird to say goodbye to our Australian housemates since we had spent so much time over the past few weeks with them, but I know we will meet up again in the future. The flight from Sydney to Bali was 6 and a half hours, and did not include a meal or movies. While JetStar offers the cheapest prices around, you really don't get much for your money. Once in Bali, we breezed through immigration and customs and headed ... read more
