The flight into Bali was short and sweet as we arrived on a new continent. We paid for our visas, had our passports checked and then who knows what happened for the next 15 minutes after that....... We were asked so many times, can I carry your bag, where you going, you need a taxi, that the 15 minutes from leaving passport control now seems like a blur of fast moving objects around us. We decided that we were just going to 'wing it' when we arrived and didn't have any where booked to stay, we didn't even have a map or a guide book for help. So Matt haggled with one of the million taxi drivers to take us into Kuta, 50,000 Rupiah (Rp), £1 = 14,000Rp so around £3.50 and so off we went. ... read more

We have just returned from another long weekend in paradise :) In fact it was really nice weather...about 30 degrees every day, some rain at night but none during the day, massive winds the first day but perfect blue skies for the last 4 days. We decided to try a different location and a different hotel... and we decided to upgrade a little as it was only 4 nights so we purchased a family suite at the Holiday Inn Tuban. And it was excellent! I really really enjoyed the hotel and found it the best i have stayed in on Bali. It was newish, clean and not too big. It didnt have the huge feel of the Jayakarta or the Dynasty or Melasti. I could say "meet you at the pool" and we would all be ... read more

It just occured to me that this trip resembles Julie Roberts Eat, Prey, Love minus Italy. Yes, I watched it but I won't admit to liking it. The flight from HK to Bali was only 5 hours. I'm glad we split up the travel time or it may have been a 17 hour flight from Canada.. Bali aiport is small and word to the wise when you get off the plane go directly to the visa on arrival to purchase your ticket. There is another area also called visa on arrival but that is customs. Not sure why they didn't just call it customs, Iguess that would be too easy. I can take anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours to get through the airport. Think of it as game of chance. If it happens you ... read more

Kuta - Day 2 The breakfast at Un's is really good. Try their banana pancakes and fruit salad. Indonesian coffee is very strong, even more so than Starbucks in my opinion and it has a great full bodied taste. The best thing about breakfast was that it was complimentary. So far the cocktails are a bust in bali - they don't really know how to make proper drinks. But I must say the frozen margaritas was pretty good at Un's but they give you less than an hour of booze. So we went off searching for some cheap local Tequila and Vodka and free poured it ourself. Both tasted nasty by itself but in the margarita it was pretty good. We decided to rent a scooter to explore the town - $5/day. It's been awhile since ... read more

Since I last wrote we have switched continents and definitely changed lifestyles. The last two weeks in Sydney were similar to the first one- rainy and cold. Much of it was spent planning for Asia, although I did get the chance to catch up with some old friends and teachers from when I studied abroad. It felt weird to say goodbye to our Australian housemates since we had spent so much time over the past few weeks with them, but I know we will meet up again in the future. The flight from Sydney to Bali was 6 and a half hours, and did not include a meal or movies. While JetStar offers the cheapest prices around, you really don't get much for your money. Once in Bali, we breezed through immigration and customs and headed ... read more

After an amazing relaxing 10 days on the Gili Islands we had to make our way back to Bali as we are flying to Bangkok tomorrow. The journey was typical Indonesian - busses and ferry were delayed and instead of 6 pm we arrived at around 8 pm. I regretted that we didn't choose the fastboat until we saw wild dolphins while we were on the ferry what really made my day. Once we arrived in Kuta and got stuck in a traffic jam I wished myself back to the Gilis where they don't have any cars or scooters. It was a real shock with all the traffic. Once we had left the safe surroundings of the minibus a crowd of people circelled around us like vultures around a dead animal. It was awful. I was ... read more

We said goodbye to Medan, and flew to Bandung an enormous city to the South East of Jakarta. We stayed one night and the following evening got a sleeper train to Yogyakarta. Without trying to sound ungrateful (but no doubt doing so) the 3 days from Medan to Yogyakarta were a bit horrible, big faceless cities with little history/culture/fun/food and more pollution and unfriendly locals, if only passively, than anywhere else on our trip. Two tips for if you find yourself with no option but to spend time there 1) Bandung has a nice Cinema where we whiled away 3 hours. (Twilight - No Comment) 2) Travel First class on the train, We didn't and 11 hours has never felt so long or indeed so Uncomfortable. Anyway we arrived in Yogyakarta with high hopes and were ... read more

Sooo yesterday we went to the Safari, it was amazing! I had a bit of a hangover, from 4 beers so no change there! We got this little bus there, with the worst aircon in the world, and just spent the whole hour being chucked about and sweltering in the heat! It was sooo worth it though, as soon as we got there they had piranha feeding! Then as we were walkin around we spotted a queue and it was for holding a baby orangutang! It was soo cute, and quite heavy! Then we watched an animal show, then jumped in the jeep and went on a safari. None of the animals were in cages as we were going round, and at one point an ostrich went in front of the jeep and the driver had ... read more

Erm...in a word....OMG! Our flight from Perth was delayed....due to lack of staff! The actual Captain came on the voiceover thing to let us know they needed 4 cabin staff, but only had 3! All we wanted to do was get to Bali and we had to wait nearly 2 hours so they could find more staff.....brilliant! Anywho...Bali is immense! Not good news for us, but its leavers week, so heaps of Aussie kids are in Bali at the moment after finishing school. It kinda feels like Magaluf, but with kids of steroids! We spent the first couple of days just having a walk about and seeing whats around, and getting accidental sunburn! Buuuuut....beer is cheap ($2 for a litre of Bintang beer) and even better spa's are even cheaper! Yesterday we had 2 x 1 ... read more

I now know the true meaning of a red eye flight, although it took me 30mind to be able to open them so I could see that! Two and half hours sleep after a really busy day not good! Anyway we got up and out to the airport no problem, and managed to get a bit of sleep on the plane. So we arrived in Bali and it hit us that we haven't a clue what to do where to go etc, but sure what's new! So we are going through immigration only to find out you have to pay €20 for you visa. This is news to us and we have no cash on us and nothing in our current accounts and they don't take credit cards!!! So we were like Fudge, what do we ... read more
